  1. I've been saying for year, "Never count the Rays out." Even when they trade their stars, they scrap together a winning team. Why can't we get guys from their management team and do the same here?
  2. I like it, Max! Keep the mojo rising.
  3. Makes you wonder about GMs not using FIP as a gauge all that much.
  4. Of course, low BB and HRs are great, but I think K's are over-rated, yet still valuable.
  5. FIP and xFIP have a lot of merit, but I've never liked how that stat devalues pitchers who consistently get players to hit the ball weakly for outs, often.
  6. It's nice having Whitlock and Andriese in the pen. Both can go pretty long in one game or two innings every few days.
  7. Agreed. Sometimes WHIP can soften a harsh view someone has with a pitcher having a 5+ ERA. The reverse is true also. OPS against might be better, but yes, team defense plays a big role in those numbers.
  8. All pens are fickle, and a select few RP'ers can really be "counted on" in a consistent and meaningful way. I'm not a huge Andriese fan, but he's decent for the role he has, and he's light years better than the circus carnival we had in the pen, last year. Sawamura is largely unknown. DHern does not seem to be able to improve his command, but he's only 24. Some pitchers have been able to get past control problems after 24, but not all that many. Whitlock could be the "steal of the year." (Yes, too man coulds and not enough shoulds in our pen.) Barnes and Ottavino have been decent set up men. Closing may prove beyond their reach. That's the big "what if" of our pen. Guys like Valdez, Brice, Taylor (not off to a great start), Brewer and others are a dime a dozen. This pen could surprise you. It could also bring me great pain and suffering.
  9. The Sox often thrive on good pitching and get shut out by unknowns and journeymen.
  10. The 4 game sample size looks very bad for the offense. OPS 1.722 JD 1.045 Vaz The rest are under .700 Under .400 .382 Renfroe .325 Verdugo .091 Dalbec .083 Devers notin's favorite stat: RBI (sarcasm alert) 6 JD 2 Cordero, Kike, Verdugo 1 Marwin, Bogey, Renfroe WHIP (IP) 0.00 Valdez (3.0), Brice (1.2) 0.90 Whitlock (3.1) 0.938 Eovaldi (5.1) 1.000 Barnes (1.0) 1.200 Pivetta (5.0) 1.400 Houck (5.0) 1.500 Sawamura (2.0) 1.750 Andriese (4.0) 3.00 Ottavino (1.1), D Hern (1.1) 4.50 Richards (2.0) 9.00 Taylor (1.0) ERA: 0.00: Pivetta, Whitlock, Valdez, Brice, Sawamura, Barnes 1.69: Eovaldi 3.60 Houck 4.50 Andriese 6.75 DHern, Ottavino 27.00 Richards 45.00 Taylor
  11. The Sox thrive in an atmosphere of turmoil. I say keep the wrong date mojo going...
  12. If he puts 4/6 and we lose, should the next guy put 4/6 for the 4/7 game to try and get the mojo back? I'm befuddled.
  13. I'm sure management stressed the need to go opposite field when called for. Players are human, and they were probably jacked up day one, then pushing too hard game 2 & 3.
  14. Yes, and we choulda/shoulda scored more runs. I hope the bats stay hot.
  15. Should he put "4/5 vs Rays?"
  16. Pivetta has always been known to have very good stuff: he's just never put it all together. The high BB/9 rate has hurt.
  17. The problem is, if we win, will we have to get the date wrong until we lose?
  18. This is a valid point. I do think Dalbec, Kike, Houck and maybe even Cordero will be fun to watch, and I will say, watching Beni, last year was painful. I also read post after post about JBJ being a black hole for long stretches. I'm more excited about watching Verdugo, Cordero & Renfroe than I would be watching Beni & Bradley. Watching this IF is and will be agonizing.
  19. Is getting the date wrong on a game thread supposed to be a reverse jinx or something?
  20. Not likely, but true. Also, my statement says as much about the rest of our rotation as it does about Pivetta or fill in the blank.
  21. But, today is the 5th.
  22. Pivetta could end up as our 2nd or 3rd best SP'er!
  23. We intentionally left 2B and CF enough room to give Downs/Chavis/Arauz a shot to win the 2B job and Duran a shot to win the CF job by year's end. We also are going with Dalbec FT right out of the gate. Houck will get all the innings he needs to show what he can do. It wasn't an either- or. We signed players with flexibility to 1 and 2 year deals for a reason.
  24. We did get ERod for Miller and could have re-signed him. Yes, we've been very good about knowing when is when.
  25. I have enough questions to ask and answer about this team.
