It's hard to pin the finances on any chosen 1 or 2 players. You could blame Betts' departure on Sale, Bogey or Eovaldi or even Price. They could have afforded Lester, because we spent that money on other players, afterwards. My point is more about at least giving the impression you tried to keep these two.

I wouldn't expect them to take a "second offer" or counter offer. Just for the optics, it should have been done. It makes us fans think we valued them very lowly.

Man-O-Man we sure had some duds, last year. Bloom's penchant for finding cheap diamonds in the rough failed miserably, last year. Even some of the guys that had decent seasons "by the numbers" seemed to show they were not the players we want sticking around- like Mazza & Springs. Even the one that did stick, Valdez, would probably pretty close to the DFA bubble, if he were out of options. I'd be personally disappointed, but I'd know that much of the draft is a crapshoot and trust Bloom & Co. know what they are doing more than I do.

I do think we should have offered both these players somewhere near what they ended up getting, but even a second offer given at the halfway point between offer #1 and their eventual contract is not only good for the optics with fans and the media, but also may get the player to come back with a reasonable counter offer that might even be less than what they ended up getting.

This is kind of what I was getting at, and you put it in words very well. I'm not expecting Dever to be that awful on defense, going forward, and Dalbec should play some at 3B when Devers is resting, but not likely enough to get a good read. If we are out of it in July or August, then making a midseason change might make more sense.

Agreed, but what if Devers ends up sucking so much, he just can't be left at 3B. The choice is, assuming he's hitting well enough to be an essential part of our line-up, 1B or DH (moving JD to corner OF) Note: I am not for moving Devers midseason and I highly doubt the Sox are even considering it. I do think he can become a fine 1Bman in a pretty short period of time.

The Sox first offer was clearly not the highest they'd have offered. Had Betts come back with a more reasonable offer, the Sox would have upped their first offer. Then, Mom should pounce on her son.

If we end up moving Devers to DH, maybe JD plays the OF and gets some cred there.

In this new era of young prospect acquisition restrictions placed on both rich and winning teams, tanking might be the best way to build up a depleted farm. You get higher picks and more slot money. After an 0-3 start vs a team that was dead worst, last year, these standings look pretty good: 4-2 Bal 3-3 Bos 3-3 NYY 3-3 Tor 2-4 TB Only 5 AL teams have a better record than the Sox, and one is KC at 3-2 and another Bal 4-2. We can tie Bal by beating them, tomorrow.

Here's an interesting way to compare our pitching staff from 2020 to 2021. We used 30 pitchers, last year, including 3 non pitchers. Lets say we use 27, this year.
