  1. I think the Ottavino deal was more about getting Frank German and still staying under the tax line. Plus, it's not like the guy has had a bad history.
  2. He probably had some influence, especially on the 14 pitcher choice, but it's not like anyone is really pining for Chavis to be on the 26. Duran is not ready, IMO. Casas may be months or a year plus away. Downs, too. Arauz may have the best argument, but with Arroyo doing so well, where would he play? I've been against the 14 pitcher idea while trying not to be critical of Cora or Bloom, and one thing it does allow for is the ability of Cora to pick and choose pitchers he thinks can be placed in a situation where they are most likely to succeed and not be forced to use someone just because they are the best of 2-3 arms left that night.
  3. One thing about having so many bad calls is that it then forces hitters to swing at pitches they may normally take. That's hard to quantify with charts and diagrams.
  4. Agreed, but on the flip side, if we continue to struggle, it would be even more concerning against these opps.
  5. I totally agree, but I am stopping short on bashing Cora for doing anything, so far. He has the long view to consider.
  6. I'm not sure. What I find surprising is that Renfroe has not played LF, yet, and many of us assumed there would be a Cordero/Renfroe platoon in LF with maybe Renfroe playing RF when the stadium has a smaller RF area.
  7. I think Cordero's D is not a major concern. I agree on the LF platoon, but I'm not sure why Renfroe has not played LF, so far this year. Either way, platoon them in the line-up and put Renfroe in RF vs LHPs, if that's what they like (Verdugo in LF.)
  8. Totally agree. Bazardo should get a look. Houck should at some point, but his innings need to be limited, and I'm for making sure we get an extra year of team control with him. I'm not sure if Seabold is ready, now. Who else might deserve the first or second crack at making a statement they belong in the bigs? Bazardo Houck Brewer Seabold Not on 40 man: Blair Ort
  9. Good points!
  10. Where's the chart on Sox called strikes?
  11. That should not be allowed. Is it a COVID thing? (Not mixing up people.)
  12. The worst part about not doing this is that it's also the better offensive alignment! Now, that being said, Kike has played CF more than anyone else, and Arroyo has played 2B more than anyone, and it's not even close. This was not the expectation in March Innings by position: 2B 102 Arroyo 44 Kike 30 Marwin (maybe too much) CF 117 Kike 57 Verdugo (maybe too much) 2 Renfroe LF: (Renfroe has yet to play an inning in LF.) 100 Cordero 37.0 Verdugo 24.1 Marwin 15.0 JD RF 112.1 Renfroe (surprised me) 57.1 Verdugo 2.0 Renfroe OF Verdugo 156 117 Kike 114 Renfroe 100 Cordero 24 Marwin 17 JD
  13. Bloom got these guys- not Cora. Also, I doubt these guys hit this badly going forward. Kike is already turning it around a bit- same with Marwin. Last 14 days: .960 Dalbec .819 Hernandez .757 Marwin Last 7 days: 1.167 Dalbec .989 Kike .884 Marwin
  14. Yes! That's one reason I called this season a "bridge season" more than a "rebuild season." We signed a ton of players to 1 year deals or 1 year deals with an option year. Nobody got more than 2 years. I think Cordero was a shot in the dark. He has tremendous upside, but the biggest part of the trade was the minor salary relief and the 3 PTBNLs. If you look at this team's biggest weaknesses beyond pitching, they are defense, 2B, LF/CF and 1B. It's no coincidence that our best immediate hopes in the minors and low cost ML'er play these positions. This is the season to let some of this all shake out and get a better idea of who can fill a role in 2022 and beyond, and who cannot. 2B: Arroyo, Downs, Chavis, Arauz, Munoz (Hernandez) LF: Cordero, Chavis (Renfroe) CF: Duran (Verdugo/Hernandez) 1B: Dalbec, Casas
  15. The opps have a .666 OPS against our staff, so far this year. .200 Whitlock .232 Valdez .264 Barnes .400 Bazardo (5 PAs) .614 Eovaldi .615 Andriese .650 ERod .662 Pivetta .671 Sawamura .745 Ottavino .760 Houck .785 Perez .797 Richards .851 Brice .921 D Hern 1.042 Taylor
  16. One interesting factoid about the right-handed hitting Arroyo's career splits: vs RHP: .705 vs LHP: .650 (This year: .885 v R and .979 v L in about equal sample sizes.)
  17. That's what I was saying back in February & March. It's a much better defensive alignment, and so far, offensively, too. Now that Arroyo got his "rest day," I hope we see it going forward.
  18. 12-8 is better than anyone expected, this spring. Let's try to be happy with that. Even while on that nice winning stretch, we all knew some hard times were coming. Our best chance is to limit those times, and we need a few pitchers to step into the "stopper" role. Here's a look at some small sample size data over our first 20 games: OPS 1.147 JD .970 Bogey .933 Devers .927 Arroyo .871 Verdugo .724 Kike .717 Vaz .692 Marwin .545 Cordero .487 Renfroe vs RHPs 1.308 JD 1.006 Verdugo .978 Devers .972 Bogey .885 Arroyo .801 Kike .789 Vaz .701 Marwin .538 Plawecki (14 PAs) .535 Cordero .464 Dalbec .373 Renfroe vs LHPs 1.048 Dalbec .979 Arroyo .967 Bogey .829 Devers .782 JD .717 Renfroe (16 PAs) .667 Cordero (3 PAs) .652 Marwin .581 Vaz .560 Kike .545 Verdugo .522 Plawecki (10 PAs) IP and ERA 24 Eovaldi 3.04 21 Pivetta 3.48 17 Richards 6.48 16 ERod 3.38 14 Perez 5.93 12 Andriese 1.54 10 Houck 4.35 10 Barnes 0.90 9.0 Whitlock 0.00 9.0 Valdez 2.00 8.2 Sawamura 2.08 7.0 D Hern 5.14 6.2 Ottavino 6.75 6.2 Taylor 10.80 5.2 Brice 4.76 1.0 Bazardo 0.00
  19. It sure does. He's always had issues with the high BB/9 rate (3.4 before this year). At this age, I doubt he "gets over it." I still like him more than Perez, and so far, he's done better than Richards.
  20. The way Arroyo is playing, despite not starting last night, Hernandez should be in CF almost everyday- at least while Arroyo keeps hitting well.
  21. They went 3 for 29 and scored 7 runs. I can't remember a line like that since maybe Matt Young.
  22. I'm sure many pitchers could say some what ifs like Pivetta can, but had Cora pulled him after 5 innings in game 2 and 4, his numbers would be: IP H ER BB 5.0 2 0 4 5.0 5 1 2 3.2 4 2 4 5.0 0 0 1 Total 18.2 IP 11 hits 3 ERs 11 BB The BB rate is still really bad, but 11 hits in 18.2 is better than decent, and his ERA might have been 1.45.
  23. Disgusting way to lose. We need a stopper, next game.
  24. another bad strike call.
