    A lot to cover here. First of all, did you see some of those "hits" off Sale. I wouldn't say he was lit up. Second, this isn't about "suddenly needing defense," this is about losing game after game because of our crappy defense. No, you don't need great D to win WS, but all of our winning seasons had better D than this, some much better. You can have the greatest pitchers in the world, but asking them to get 4, 5 or 6 outs in an inning, several times a game is not going to work out well. Do you really think the 2018 team defense was anywhere near as bad as these guys have been, especially the last 2-3 weeks? (Hint: it's not close.) Newsflash, we'd lead the league ins coring, right now, if we played against defenses like ours. I have never said Defense is the most important aspect of baseball. You know we both agree it's pitching, but how you improve a team usually involves upgrading your weakest areas, and to me, our weakest is defense and the pen. Our defense is helping our pen and starters look worse than they really are, but I'm not taking the pitchers off the hook by saying that.

    Rays fans can probably find a team with NY killing them and TBR struggling against. The O's disparity is wild, though.

    Good summary, Nick. Yes, the Rays are clearly the best, and facing them after a WC win, assuming that happens, will be a very tough match-up. We can't worry about them. Maybe some of the "luck" they seem to be having will run out at just the right time. We need to get healthy and stat playing like major leaguers. Despite all the bumbling and stumbling, we still almost pull out many of the games we are losing. While that seems very frustrating, I think it is also a sign, that when we are fully healthy, we can do enough to start winning these close ones, again.

Of the five players received in the Andrew Benintendi trade, Luis De La Rosa has received perhaps the least attention, but it might be time to start giving the guy some attention. For the month of August, he had a 1.29 ERA and 0.79 WHIP over 14 innings. He also had 12 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .149 OBA. The 19-year-old righty's arsenal includes four pitches (fastball, curveball, changeup, slider). He's shown good control and a strong feel for his secondary pitches, although he could stand to add some velocity to his fastball which currently tops out in the low 90s.

    3 swinging bunts off Sale than the catastrophe in CF. That was just the start of the floodgates opening up. I'm not sure I have ever seen a game like that.

    There were too many mistakes to list. Many not even called errors. It was just plain sick!

    The Iggy today is not the Iggy we remember, but your point is spot on. It basically comes down to this: if one SS makes 50-80 more plays a season on the same amount and difficulty of plays than another one, but makes 15-20 more errors, he's still way better than the other guys. (And, yes, some SSs do make 50-80 more plays than others over a season.)

    It was much worse than just the 4 errors, and I keep harping on the same point. The plays that are not called errors, that are made by most or a good chunk of teams everyday, are listed as singles, doubles or triples in the scorecard. There is no way this is the worst Sox game in history, but it sure felt like it. The word "sick" does not come close to giving justice to what that game was.

    Iggy has fallen off a cliff on D, this year. How many Angel games have you watched?

    Even before this inning, I swear we led the league in "earned runs" allowed by bad defense.

    He's gotten some big hits, but he looked better last year, and there does seem to be something about him that rubs me the wrong way.

    It's too early to ask if the season is riding on one player's shoulder, but it sure feels like that, right now, with Richards.

    The scorer has saved dozens of errors on the Sox defense, this year.

    He just hit 97, when he needed it, so that's good, but Cruz got his slider. OUCH!
