  1. I'm not sure they go with "anyone but Painter and Abel," but if Song looks good, maybe it gets to that point. BTV Values on others: 14.4 McGarry 11.1 Crawford 5.9 Rojas 5.5 Lee 3.0 Wilson 2.4 Bergolla, Viars & Hall 2.1 Rincones 1.9 Song
  2. Now, this is something we totally agree on! Yipee! A Donny O and Sean M combo would be great. I'd actually start listening to the audio feeds, again.
  3. Teeny, tiny, miniscule sample sizes, but I couldn't resist... 2-2 Duran 4.000 OPS 2-3 Caleb Hamilton 1.750 2-4 Alfaro 1.250 (Is there competition for the #2 catcher?) 2-4 Wong 1.000 5+ ABs 2.000 Bobby Dee (Trying to nab the #26 slot) 1.625 Fitzy (was hot, last ST'ing, too) 1.600 Verdugo (the new and improved version?) 1.571 Lugo (was hyped long ago and is resurging) 1.400 Casas (could be a major force in 2023) 1.300 EValdez (my sleeper pick) 1.089 GAllen (OF AAA depth- has 2 SBs) 1.000 Tapia (may squeeze his way onto the 40 in '23) .667 Abreu .650 Devers (4 ABs) .600 Yoshida .536 N Crook .533 Sogard .417 Rafaela Pitching: 24 pitchers with a 0.00 ERA Some with 2 IP: Crawford, Kluber, Winck
  4. I may be in a minority, here, and that seems to be happening more and more as I get older, but I always likes Sean McDonough, despite his too frequent smugness.
  5. He was 100% ineligible when protection day arrived, but yes, there has always been a chance his status could change at any given time. I hear he was scheduled to be deployed to Japan, so maybe that convinced the Sox his request for exemption would not be accepted. I'm pretty sure DD did not expect this. I think he made this move with the longer term look. It is an interesting side note story to the season, and with DD being the GM, it increases the energy put into following this as it plays out.
  6. I think Philly will take all the time they can to assess what they have, and then decide what to do. I'm pretty sure notin nailed what will happen.
  7. I'd vote "None of the above," but it was not a choice.
  8. Now, you have me craving one! Damn YOU!
  9. Yes. I got bored with the old question and raised a new one. No, I don't think any team would have put him on their 40 man roster, except maybe Philly, for all the reasons presented here. His not being eligible to play is a pretty big stumbling block.
  10. Off to an early good start. Better than looking lousy.
  11. If it is true they could have added Song to the 40 and immediately put him on the military exemption list, or whatever it is called, and replaced him with Ward or Ort or whoever, why not do that? He stays on the list until he is eligible, and we kick the can down the road on having to chose or not. If all this could have been done, I can see calling it a mess-up. I'm not sure about all these rules and details, though.
  12. Agreed, the list was a joke. Of all the players to choose, why LeBron? Russell, Brady, Jordan... Was it because of multiple teams? How about Brady, Jabbar, Reggie...?
  13. Yup, and sometimes that kind of thinking is highly rewarded.
  14. That is my strong belief, yes. Nobody thought he'd even be eligible. Most of the teams that have no pitching, probably think $100K is a lot to gamble.
  15. I doubt a single person in any organization, except maybe Philly would have said "Protect him." I'm not even sure had he been in the Philly system, they'd have protected him.
  16. MLB.com ranks the Sox top 30 prospects: 1. Mayer 2. Casas 3. Rafaela 4. Bleis 5. Romero 6. Yorke 7. Mata 8. Walter 9. Paulino 10. Anthony 11. Jordan 12. Gonzalez 13. Perales 14. Lugo 15. Murphy 16. Hickey 17. Bonaci 18. Valdez 19. Coffey 20. Kavadas 21. Meidroth 22. Brannon 23. Abreu 24. E R-C 25. Rogers 26. Kelly 27. Webb 28 Ravelo 29. Hamilton 30 F Encarnacion Biggest difference from SP? Dalton Rogers #25 (SP not in top 60) Meidroth #21 (SPs at #36) Jacob Webb #27 (SP not in top 60.) No Drohan (#22on SP) in top 30
  17. Long lines?
  18. I thought about that after posting. GMs seeing guys like Vic taken, must have sharpened up. I still think no amount of homework or data collecting would have convinced any team, other than maybe Philly to decide to protect Song. The whole place on the 40, then military exemption list is still a bit confusing, to me, and maybe they messed up, there, but I'm not so sure.
  19. Looking at MVP’S list, it looks like “more homework” was done years ago.
  20. Smuggle in a bag of unshelled peanuts and a candy bar. The beer might be more difficult.
  21. That would suck, errr, wait....
  22. Maybe thinking, deja vu. I've drafted this guy, twice!
  23. I wonder at what.
  24. As almost all Rule 5 picks are, Song has a lot of potential, no doubt. He was viewed as one of the best pitchers in the draft, 4 years ago. Despite the fact that many top ranked pitchers don't pan out, many do. Whenever a GM adds a player, other than by draft and IFA, where less information is available, they pretty much base it on the "knowns." It is very rare anyone is selected without even some AA action, and usually it's promising AA action. It's also very rare a player is selected, who has not played for 3+ years, and usually in those cases, it's a player who was proven before going out on an extended injury period. I'm bummed we lost a promising pitcher from our system. It was a freaky confluence of happenings that has created this debate. I think this whole thing surprised even DD.
  25. I get all that, and it's been rehashed dozens of times. I just don't see many things as "mistakes" that others do, I guess. BTW, I would not have viewed it as a mistake to yank him, either. There is a lot of gray area in these types of choices. I realize some see this as totally black & white with no gray, and that's fine. I see a few things as black and white that others see a lot of gray, too.
