  1. He's no dummy, except when bike-riding.
  2. Are you saying we could have/should have offered so much more that he'd have accepted without the opt out? How much of a field day would the Sox fans and media and posters, here have had when ERod went home on leave, last year? He sure looks like a keeper, now. Again, I was talking about the decline of the vets Bloom took over as being the same or worse than the decline under DD in 2019. Who we kept, didn't keep or added is a separate issue.
  3. In terms of ERA, this would be a career year, but Martin has been excellent for many years, and has had better years using other statts better suited for RP'ers. That says a lot, because it's hard to imagine doing better than he has, this year.
  4. I'm not disagreeing. My point was about the excuse made for 2019 was the same if not worse for 2020 and beyond. BTW, I'm not sure extending ERod would be viewed as a clear plus, especially if we gave the opt out, too.
  5. I think his point was "none." I'd argue Wacha and Hill were good values, and Paxton came close to earning $10M/2. The Pivetta trade was fine. RP'er were better: Strahm, Jansen, Martin and some scrubs worked out.
  6. Shoulda traded him while his stock was highest! LOL
  7. $6.5 Perez $5.5 Perez $10M Richards $7M Wacha $5M Hill $10M/2 Paxton $10M Kluber You get what you pay for, and he could have spent more on Pitching than O. One could argue Bloom got about the right production for that money- maybe a little less.
  8. Good point, but look what DD spent on Sale, Bogey and Nate compared to what Bloom spent for 2020. I'm guessing DD could have convinced JH to pay Betts and not Sale + Nate, plus the cost of Betts was probably less had we tried after 2016, 2017 or even 2018.
  9. So, no blame at all to DD, who had 4 years to do it. Sounds like a lame excuse defending DD. Bloom had a few months and no budget. He spent less in the 2019-2020 winter that just 1 year of Betts on an arb deal. Not an excuse- just the facts.
  10. Offerman had a .385 OBP with KCR before coming to BOS.
  11. CLE actually was better, but point well-taken. Best team OBP 1998-2004: .373 CLE '99 .367 CLE '00 .366 NYY '99 .364 NYY '98 .363 NYM '99 .363 COL '00 .362 SFG '00 .361 SEA '00, TEX '99, .HOU '00 .360 BOS '04, BOS '03, OAK '00 & SEA '01
  12. Or you trade for someone like Castillo and extend him, although he turns 31 soon. Better to trade for 26 year olds or younger..
  13. And no poster disagrees with that, either. It didn't help that his meager attempts were mostly disasters. A much bigger budget was likely still a major factor (or as you call it, a "rationalization.")
  14. I can't see the fixation on Offense, when our top 4 priorities are pitching. You don't even mention pitching in passing.
  15. What's the most Bloom spent? I think it was like $20M in 2020. $30M in 2021. Maybe $40M AAV in 2022, including his first somewhat large and long deal for Story. This past winter plus the Devers signing was Bloom's biggest splurge. If you go back to March 2022 and count the Devers extension that starts, next year, you can come close to one of DD's splurges, but that's 2+ seasons to come up with a comp. (2022-2024>)
  16. Nobody is claiming that. They are saying it is one reason why we lost. Are you saying, we'd still have lost had Bloom had another $30+M to spend every winter? Are you sure about that? No doubt, we may have still lost, but it still is a valid point to make, even if a "rationalization."
  17. Worse, we blamed Bloom for not spending.
  18. So, not all RP'ers are inconsistent. Our pen could be fine, if we add 3 SP'er (even just 2 who can pitch 175+ IP.) Jansen Martin Houck Whitlock Schreiber Winckowski Bernardino Pivetta or Crawford (whichever one is not the 5th SP) It is light on lefties. The minor league depth: Z Kelly Joely Murphy Walter Mills Robertson Guerrero Converted SP'er
  19. Kluber, Ort and Mondesi are on the 60 day IL, so they do not take up a roster slot. They are as good as DFA'd, and will be let go. To me, even with no outside additions, the addition of Rule 5 players will take all the slots of the 60 man IL guys, which would leave these guys to be replaced with outside the system additions: Jacques, Barraclough, Garza, Weiss> SP1 SP2 SP4 LH'd RP Then, can Llovera or Gillaspie for a RH'd power bat who can play plus D in CF or RF. The 40 man might be stuck with one guy like Dalbec, but we could just protect one more rule 5 guy and trade him, too.
  20. I'm talking Sale, Nate and ERod under Bloom. It wasn't just 2019, the big named pitchers struggled or got hurt. ERod started 34 games in 2019 and then missed all of 2020. Sale started 25 in 2019 and never came close, afterwards. Nate sucked in 2019, but also missed a lot of time from 2020-2022, and wasn't great every year. Bloom didn't even have Price and had no budget to replace him, until 2021's $10M/1 for Richards. The one season Bloom got anything from the carry over SP'ers was 2021, and look what happened that fall. 32 GS Nate 3.75 ERA 31 GS ERod 4.74 ERA was not great but it sure beats Richards and Kluber. (Getting 30 starts and 155 IP from newly acquired Pivetta helped, too.)
  21. That was about the time OBP became the fad.
  22. I've never worried about his swing or approach to the K zone. He'll look bad on some swings, but he also hit balls out of the K zone for Hrs enough times, for it not to be a big concern, for me. Maybe, as he ages and loses his edge a little, it might become a major concern, but often player figure it out as they mature and make adjustments. IMO, Devers is fine, as is on offense. I'm also a believer in the benefit of having a line-up that has players with differing approaches. It makes it harder on opposing pitchers and when most batters can't figure out that day's pitcher, the unique approach guy does.
  23. Sorry, but I do not know a single poster who disagreed with the position we need more pitching.
  24. It shows it's not the post he is responding to, but rather the poster he has an ax to grind with.
  25. No doubt. That is why he is gone. His foundation will go on, and hopefully the next guy does not squander it. (Yes, I know, much is based on speculative values, but I'd rather have a foundation based on high speculative value than lower ones.) He should have been able to win while rebuilding, especially this year. He had a big winter spending budget, and although he had to replace some big producers like Nate, JD, Bogey and Vaz, those big-named players did not have fantastic numbers in 2022. He swung and hit on a few gets, but he missed on too many and focused his efforts on the pen and offense not the rotation and defense, and it bit him and the team in the ass. It was his "make or break" moment, and it broke.
