  1. Okay, 7 years ago is rare, right?
  2. You rarely hear of "leadership" on a struggling player. As far as $10M/1 pitchers go, Kluber looked like as good a gamble as anyone else. When Eflin's name was mentioned as a possible get, I don't recall much jumping for joy. There was banter about us being outbid by the cheap Rays, but not much about missing out on a great signing. Most were thrilled to see Perez finally let go after 2021. It's really a long shot at $10M. IMO, he should have made a trade, but as someone said, "easier said than done."
  3. Good points. There were a few that felt, at least a mini-fire sale, larger than Vaz, was called for. We have about 2 months before the August 1st deadline, so we should know mre about Casas, Duran, Valdez and others, and perhaps more importantly, about Story, Duvall, and Mondesi. We may also have new injury concerns by then, too. Bloom has shown he can do well with these types of trades, but mostly as a seller. His biggest prospect traded away as a buyer was Aldo Ramirez for Schwarber. Next, might have been Groome for Hosmer and 2 prospects (Rosier & Ferguson,) so even that trade was not really a full sell trade. Pivetta Schwarber McGuire Robles & Davis Valdez & Abreu plus some minor moves (not all trades) like Pham, Iggy, Shaw...
  4. It's one area he has done pretty well, unless you count the 2022 non-fire sale against him.
  5. He had 3 horrific starts in a row in early July 2022, then went 4.65 in his last 14 starts of 2022, which is about his norm with the Sox. We can all cherry-pick time frames, but IMO, Pivette has not been continuously awful or even bad since 7/1/22. He's had pretty long stretches of being okay (like from /7/17 to 10/5/22) and even a few good ones, but there is no doubt, he has sucked, this year.
  6. He clearly chose to spend elsewhere, and most of those moves looks good near the 1/3 mark, but yes, he relied too much on long shots like Paxton & Sale and pen to rotation moves like Houck & Whitlock. Up until the Story signing, he had budget excuses. Noe anymore.
  7. He was a yea r or two off on Martin Perez. The Richards signing mirrors the Kluber one. The Wacha/Hill signings ($12M combined) worked out okay in isolation. To me, you get what you pay for and for the amount he pais these guys, he did come up short, but not by a whole lot, when you look at what the norm is on bargain hunting.
  8. Indeed, and Luis Castillo was not cheap, either. To me, FA signings fail way too often. Our history with trades have had an amazing success rate on aces, so maybe I’m biased.
  9. I did not think that line up was all that great, but it does have promise and multiple options at the more sketchy slots. I realise we will need to add more to it, but I do think we can afford to focus a lot more on pitching.
  10. Yes, I mentioned that post was a joke and was moving on. Thanks for bringing it back up again.
  11. If we spent everything on the rotation and maybe bringing Turner back, is this line-up enough? 1. Verdugo 2. Yoshida 3. Story 4. Devers 5. Turner 6. Casas 7. Duran/Refsnyder 8. Valdez/Arroyo 9. Wong/McGuire
  12. We gained a half game on NYY and TOR and lost a half to TBR & BAL. I'm still thinking it will be easier to pass BAL than NYY, but maybe not. Maybe we can't pass either one.
  13. Walter got shelled, this time out of the pen. 3.2, 9, 7, 1, 3 Nobody had 2 hits, but Palka had a 2B w 2BBs DHamilton, Goodrum, Abreu, Alfaro and RHern all had a single and BB POR won 3-2 as G Gambrell (Beni trade) looked good, again (1.69 ERA.) 1-3 Rafaela w HR 1-4 Yorke w HR 1-3 Kavadas w 2B GRE won 6-2 as Coffey got his ERA down to 2.89 6 IP, 3H, 0ER and 0BB with 11 Ks! Ferguson 3-5 w 2 SBs Mayer 2-5 w 2B and 3 rbi Bonaci 2-5 SAL lost 5-3 Chacon 2-4 w BB Bleis 1-5
  14. Sale vs PFaadt Time to turn things back around- one game at a time!
  15. Agreed, and he was already proven, when we got him. The big gamble was all the talk about his size and durability as he aged. Schilling was a great get, but we knew it wasn't going to be long term. Beckett was Mr. Clutch (if you believe in that) and was also proven. Sale was proven. The FA, Price was, too.
  16. I'm really not for buying an ace. I was just talking about financial priorities. You never know you are getting an ace. If Price was not an ace, after we got him, then I'm not sure what resume can ever look much better prior to acquisition. Trading for younger pitchers that have shown "ace material," whatever that means, seems like the best way to get an ace, but again, is trading Mayer worth it? I'm not sure. I was playing around on BTV and came up with these accepted deals, and again, I'm not "for them." I was just looking what we might be a ble to get for Mayer: Mayer for McK. Gore, Abrams & Vaquero Mayer for Giolito, TAnderson (SS) & Kopech Mayer, Rafaela, Walter for Cease & T Anderson Mayer, Rafaela & Kike for Nootbaar, Gallegos, DeJong & $6M Mayer, Kike & $4M for Brady Singer, Barlow and Drew Waters No Mayer? Romero & Walter for CJ Abrams, M Gore and salary dump P Corbin
  17. Yes. I never disagreed with that or even hinted otherwise. Let's move on.
  18. This winter's Rule 5 players: Luis Perales Eddison Paulino Ryan Fernandez ? Wikelman Gonzalez ? Doubtfuls, as of now Matthew Lugo Stephen Scott Bryan Gonzalez Nick Sogard Brainer Bonaci Angel Bastardo (Mayer is not eligible until 2025, but he may be added during the 2024 season.) Winter 2024 names include Hickey, Yorke, Kavadas, Jordan, Guerrero
  19. I doubt Kike would cost $10M to keep around beyond 2023, but I agree. He should not come back. There will be other arb raises and Turner has a player option ($13.4M with $6.7M buyout.) My guess is we pay Bleier $250K and refuse his $3.75M option. cots has us at $81M under, next year with no... 10 Kike 10 Kluber (we say no to option with no buyout) 7 Duvall 4 Paxton The arbs are not counted 3 of 3 Dugo, Pivetta, Arroyo, Refsnyder 2 of 3 McGuire, Chang 1 of 3 Schreiber, Dalbec We should have plenty to spend on the rotation, especially if we backfill the loss of Duvall & Kike from within the system. Here is the non pitcher roster for 2024 with no additions: C: Wong & McGuire 1B: Casas & Dalbec ? 2B: Valdez & Reyes/Arroyo ? (Hamilton/Yorke) SS: Story & Chang ? (Mayer) 3B: Devers LF: Yoshida & Refsynder CF: Duran (Rafaela) RF: Verdugo (Abreu) DH: Turner (option) or Valdez/Ref
  20. We play 25 of those 38 games vs the ALE after the trade deadline, and one would hope also after we have Story and Duvall back (maybe even Mondesi.) We also have 7 games vs HOU and 3 w TEX after the deadline (AUG 1.)
  21. We keep saying we need an ace, need an ace, need an ace, then suggest going for more O. I doubt we can afford Soto and then get an ace or vice versa.
  22. These days off after a tough streak really gets the conversations going in every different direction- even south!
  23. MLB.com reports... Masataka Yoshida living up to agent's billing WWW.MLB.COM This story was excerpted from Ian Browne’s Red Sox Beat newsletter. To read the full newsletter, click here. And subscribe to get it regularly in your inbox. "...given the many skeptical teams there were on the market that didn’t agree with the agent’s valuation of the left fielder from Japan. “There were about three other teams besides the Red Sox that did [agree],” Boras said. “But we felt Fenway was an ideal place for him and it worked out great.”
