  1. He's still better as an opener than than keeping Jacques on the 26. I'm fine with him ramping up from 3-4 innings to 5 or 6 by September. It would have been a waste rehabbing him longer in AAA as Jacques and the revolving door of misfit pen arms were handing games away. BTW, the term "opener" is usually reserved for pitchers who start and go only 1-2 innings. (IMO)
  2. I really like Casas, but I also like Mayer, Anthony and other top prospects. How do you propose we trade for an excellent, cost-controlled pitcher with 3+ years of team control without giving up something of value. A common misconception is that suggesting a trade of a good player means we devalue them or want to "dump them," because we don't like them. We need a middle IF'er badly, so I want to keep Mayer. We will need OF'ers, soon, so I want to keep Anthony and Bleis, and their trade value should only increase, anyway. It's also why we should keep Rafaela and Abreu. Who else should we trade for pitching? Verdugo won't get us a good one. Trade Duran?
  3. Well said. I made a similar point, when fans were complaining about us losing the face of the franchise in Bogey, and to lesser extents JD and Nate. We were losing with those guys. Their "faces" had little value. (Their production was declining, too.)
  4. Do you think Story could play 3B, or are we just shifting an arm injury risk to another position? Guys like Bonaci, Lugo, Fitzy, DHam and Meidroth are closer to ML ready and maybe could play 3B well enough, but their bats are highly suspect at the ML level. Of this group, maybe Meidroth and Bonaci have the best chance. Id Devers moves to 1B, we'd likely sign a 3Bman. Notin is saying Matt Chapman. IDK.
  5. So, you are saying our strategy should be to make contracts look better than to improve team defense at 2 positions? Besides, the Devers contract does not "look better," if he keeps throwing the ball away at 3B.
  6. I was all for keeping Betts, at any price. I was willing to go $400M/14. However, if JH kept the budgets the same, we would not be any better off with Betts and 5 replacement level players, instead of 6 decent players. It's not an easy comp to make.
  7. DH or for another team. IMO, one aspect of the idea of building up the everyday player portion of the farm, is to eventually trade some for pitching.
  8. Devers has a plus glove. His range is better than Casas. It's his arm that causes all the problems, and that won't be an issue at 1B.
  9. Devers would be 3 times better than Casas at 1B, day one- with no practice. There is a reason they moved Casas from 3B to 1B before Devers.
  10. How many ups and downs have you had, this season? Is there no more room for another up or two? It's been our pattern, all year. I don't see suggesting we hold to our pattern as dreaming.
  11. I'm not sure why the money should prevent a move that helps the team at two positions.
  12. Rafaela homered and Abreu had 2 hits, but that was all Woo could muster. Walter pitched well, but it was not enough. POR lost as Yorke and Hickey had 2 hits, each. Song got drilled in the GRE loss. Anthony has 2 hits, as did Castro, Gonzo and Decker. SAL won 4-2 as Monegro did meh (4IP, 4H, 2ER, 1BB, 5K)
  13. Maybe one of the 5 SSs we drafted can be moved to 3B. Can Story play 3B?
  14. I waffled after he started showing marked improvement, but I'm back to square one, I guess. He's not horrific at 3B, like Kike was at SS, but it looks like it's time to move him.
  15. Casas is even worse on D than Devers.
  16. Whitlock's value already fell to 4.8, while Houck's remains at 27.5. I think Yoshida started out in the negative value column, but now he is at 17.8. If we move Devers to 1B, then Casas plays DH, Yoshida LF and Duran might be "sell high" trade bait. Or, we move Yoshida to DH and Duran to LF and trade Casas. Of course, Dugo's name has been mentioned as trade bait, too. Could Whitlock and Houck be on the list? Here is the BTV numbers: 47.5 Casas 45.7 Duran 27.5 Houck 11.3 Verdugo 4.8 Whitlock
  17. Who started, today? With decent defense, Sale likely goes 5 IP with 1 ER. BTW, I didn't say great or even "good" start; I said "decent."
  18. I try really hard to never let one game form a lasting opinion on a baseball team, but today is really pushing me hard. Of course, it's not really just this game. We've seen the pattern, all year long. There is, however, another competing pattern that has been going on all season, and that is whenever most of us start giving up on the team, they bounce back and get our hopes back up. Another pattern is us beating good teams more than we do bad teams, so I'm holding onto slivers of hopes. Just about every team we face, going forward is a winning team, and or someone we need to pass to make the playoffs. It seems near impossible to think we can win almost every series going forward, but who knows? Start by winning 2 or 3 vs NYY and LAD. Tale 4 of 7 vs HOU and we go to KCR on an 8-5 stretch (and 14-9,) which doesn't look all that great, but it also means HOU and NYY lost some games. (16-10 after KCR) Then, the real crucial stretch begins... 3 @ TBR (2-1) 3 v BAL (2-1) The SEP 15th series at TOR could be the big chance, but we need to get closer by then. 4 v NYY (3-1) 23-13 in 36 gms
  19. ...and another wasted decent start.
  20. A couple wins vs the Yanks will turn him around.
  21. How is that worse than a crappy defensive 3Bman and current crappy defensive 1Bman, too? He's not getting paid for his D. Most of his errors are throwing, so he could be a plus on D at 1B.
  22. He keeps showing flashes, some got longer and longer that kept giving me hope he could turn around his D, but then he keeps F'ing up. There are other positions on the team with worse D, but I agree. He can't play 3B. Since Casas is a poor defender at 1B, it seems like an easy choice.
  23. Jeter Downs scoring 3 runs is a knife in the back.
  24. Doesn't take but one bad day... ERA before today/ ERA after today 2.81/3.20 Wink 2.94/3.63 Murph
  25. ...and then the 3rd worst hitter on the team hits a 2 run jack.
