  1. Kinda the definition of "gut feeling." He reminds me a little of Vlad and Devers, who were considered undisciplined. Some still want to tweak Devers approach. Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, no, I am not comparing Rafaela to Vladevers, but I think he may surprise many of the experts, because he is so unique.
  2. Exactly. When we look at next summer's rankings, we will see some have fallen, and some have gained.
  3. I get it. You can be much better in CF and still a plus at SS. My point was about maybe not knowing he is just average at SS D.
  4. Worse than "journeyman" level.
  5. Good post. Hickey could add to his value, if he could remain a viable 3rd catcher on a 26 man roster, especially if both are weak hitting catchers in front of him.
  6. I'm all for letting Sox management pick the time they think Rafaela is ML ready. I'm even fine with the idea of delaying a ML ready Rafaela a little bit to gain a year of service in his prime. I'm just saying, my gut says he will be fine at the plate, sooner than many might think he is. That's not saying I know more than them, or that I think they are wrong not to rush him.
  7. Dugo has been "nothing" vs LHPs his whole career. His name looks better in the line-up than Ref, but the eye test says otherwise, right?
  8. He did the same when Paxton was a Yankee, until he started getting hurt, again. The fact is, Cashman, like Bloom, tend to sign injury prone players, a lot.
  9. Yes, that's why I agreed on keeping Mookie as the better move.
  10. Fair enough, but it's hard to know how good his SS D would have been had he played there FT. Again, I'm not saying he should have. He belongs in CF or RF (at Fenway.)
  11. I'm all for playing him in the OF and keeping there. My point was how do we know he is just average at SS, or would have been had he been kept there. Asking that question does not imply I want him at SS, instead of OF.
  12. Yes, it's not really irony, but it is puzzling.
  13. Agreed, but would you have still been okay with sucking in 2020 and 2021?
  14. Agreed. I was just trying to emphasize the nuts and bolts of budgets we knew to show how keeping Betts would have meant having very poor supporting casts in 2020 and 2021 and even 2022 and 2023 to a lesser extent. Is Devers exte3nded with betts locked up? Who knows, maybe we'd have traded Bogey before he bolted, dumped Sale or JD, or both.
  15. Assuming Dugo is traded. Maybe... vs RHP LF Yoshida CF Duran RF Rafaela/Abreu DH FA or EValdez/Abreu/Rosier vs LHPs LF Reysnyder CF Duran RF Rafaela DH Yoshida
  16. Exactly. Plus, I'd like to see us actually play the better players.
  17. He really has been great. He is one of those "late bloomers," who came to the bigs at age 28 and 29, did poorly, then came back in 2018 at age 32. Since 2019, he's at... 2.88 ERA 2.86 FIP 1.02 WHIP am amazing 8.6 K/BB ratio. (9/6 K/9 and 1.1 BB/9) Among RPs with 200+ IP since 2019, he places: 1st K/BB at 8.62 (The next guy, L Hendriks is at 7.83 and 3rd is RIggy at 5.64) 6th in xFIP at 2.90 6th WHIP at 1.022 13th in fWAR at 4.4 (o.1 from Chapman) Since 2022, he's only gotten better: 2.44 ERA (16th) 2.43 xFIP(4th) 0.986 WHIP (8th) 8.8 K/BB (1st) 2nd in Minter at 5.9
  18. Who says Rafaela is just average at SS? Has he played there enough to really know? (I do agree on keeping him in CF, especially since Duran in LF and Yoshida at DH makes a lot of sense.
  19. The list of ex Sox players doing well, elsewhere, especially the ones who sucked, here is long. Ironically, the ones who did well, here, seem to be mostly doing worse, with a few very large exceptions- like Betts and JD.
  20. I could use a vacation, as long as it's paid.
  21. He may not need to hit above .650 or .675 to be given a very long look. JBJ was given over 600 PAs and 180+ games, before his bat kicked into high gear.
  22. We signed Story more than 3 years after the trade, and the Devers extension kicks in over 5 years afterwards. To me, the issue was the budget, and that was what forced the Betts trade. I guess, in theory, maybe Bloom might have been given the chance to trade other higher-priced players, instead of Betts, but after 2020, when Betts became a FA, how does he sign him, under the budget he had for 2021? It's possible, if he does not sign anyone else. What would the roster have looked like in 2020 and 2021 with the budget we had and Betts making $30M? How could we have dumped half-Price without including a good player or prospect (Bello, Casas, Duran?) We will never truly know, but the fact that Betts was traded had to do with the budget set by JH & Co. NOT Bloom. Had we kept Betts, the roster would have been awful around him- worse than it already was in 2020.
  23. We thought our future budget looked bad a few years back...
  24. Maybe sit Dugo v LHPs. We know he won't get any better vs them. He's had years to try.
  25. See: goal posts in motion.
