remind me again quantity of AB's per season by position players and quantity of GS by SP? thats like saying a regular season baseball game is as important as a regular season football game.

no. you have it completely reverse. i expect my "Ace" not to have a bad month. i expect him to pitch like the highest paid pitcher in baseball for the entire season. on the flip-side i expect my 1 year contract $13MM pitcher to pitch s**tty sometimes and good sometimes. try focusing on that.

not even close. we will be "done here' when the 2016 season is in the books and we can see what "value" clay has contributed to the team vs Price's contribution. or does BABIP say otherwise?

if you dont think that some of David Prices starts thus far this season have been as bad or as frustrating as some of Clays starts then you havent been watching the games.

it makes the same point as saying "if the manager has to give the ball to a pitcher for 1 game". of course the answer is Price. i mean, we did spend $217MM for an "Ace", right? you absolutely give the ball for 1 game to your "ace" and not the pitcher that you picked up a reasonable 1 year option on. right?

there was nothing wrong with what you stated. well...maybe there was. actually at times this season Price has pitched much worse than Clay.

thats a fair point. hopefully Price will end up being 50% better than clay by the end of the season.

a 2 year deal at slightly more AAV but close enough to be comparable. definitely a worthy replacement to clay. but i wonder if he would have signed with the Sox or had that bridge already been torched?

Currently Price value is $19MM below his contract price. Clays value is $13MM below his contract price. so i guess your right. they are both far below value.

sorry not full stop. my contention is that Buch is worth the $13MM option. regardless of whether or not he pitches to a 2 ERA. your contention is that it's ok for price to have a 5.5 ERA because he gets lots of k's and his babip is high.

kind of easy to answer the question a couple months into the season. i said offseason. Happ is on a 3 year deal. the other 2 are very good examples how hindsight is 20/20 (thus far).

so last offseason who were you advocating the Sox FO go out and get for the 1 year / $13MM they are spending on Clay? strange how this question never gets answered....

no. let's compare Wrights performance to what his own salary is. and he is far outperforming his contract. thats a win for the sox FO. Buch is pitching slighly below his contract price. TBD if its a win or loss for FO. Price is pitching far below his contract thus far this season. so far it is a loss for the FO.

you can compare any two players in baseball. that's what makes our favorite game the absolute best. i dont care if price has 5 more k's per start and buch has 5 more groundouts per start. the ERA (and to an extent WHIP) shows how a pitcher has performed THUS FAR. the peripherals can form a solid opinion on how you expect said pitcher to perform GOING FORWARD. but i dont care if my pitcher gets 18 outs a game via flyball or 18 outs a game vie K if the end result is a ~ 6 ERA they are doing the SAME RESULT. now if you want me to talk "future starts" then yes, without a doubt Price should have better numbers than clay. but he is SUPPOSED TO. he is getting paid 2.5 times more than him this season and his length of contract is 7 years more than Clays. so yeah, he better put up better numbers and better "peripherals". i dont expect my 1 year / $13MM contract pitcher to perform like a 7 year / $217MM pitcher. Do you? sure sounds like it.

they really are on an incredible pace right now. both offensively and defensively. defensively we have 22 errors and 36 DP's. travis shaw (5 errors) is the only player with more than 2 errors at this point of the season. incredible.

it was in response to a post that said "he has a 6 ERA at ~ 10 starts". i simply pointed out another starting pitcher on the Red Sox staff with similar GS + ERA numbers. what is "unjustifiable" about that?

do you have a list you posted this past offseason on who you would have spent that option money on? i think we would all prefer to "throw good money after good". but i am unsure of the list of SP we could have had on a 1 year deal this past offseason? anyone?

thanks for making my point. this is exactly why a 1 year / $13MM contract for a starting pitcher is a no-brainer. if he pitches to a 3 ERA he is a steal. if he pitches to a 5+ ERA it doesnt crush the organization.
