  1. I'll tell you what I liked about last night's (2-1 win over Houston) hitting. The Sox played in Philly the night before, and in the first two innings and good scoring opportunities and actually hit the ball hard--but right to someone--with RISP. Vazquez it's true had a GIDP, but Houston had 3 of them. Bogaerts really struggled last night, but we know he is a good hitter. What is hurting the Sox in the hitting department is being dead last in the AL in dingers but leading the AL in GIDP. Moonslav is probably right the hitting will improve, but no one should claim it will be as good as last year. Improvement, whatever it is, could be enough because the Sox right now have the 3d best won-loss record in the AL and the 5th best in MLB. The pitching is saving this team, and I think it's fair to say that's the first time that's happened in the John Henry era now in its 15th or 16th season.
  2. I don't like Pomeranz one darn bit, but last night he was terrific: 6.1 innings, 1 run, a solo dinger. Nothing wrong with wanting a big bat, but not at the price one would likely cost. This is so far as I know the first Sox team in the John Henry era that has had strong pitching and relatively weak hitting. That would be terrible except we have the 3d best record in the AL and only 2 NL teams have better records. moonslav insists the hitting will improve, and for now that's good enough for me even though I think Ortiz left a big hole in the lineup. To me 3b and DH--Pablo and Hanley--are the shortfalls and Cherington paid a big price for both of them. Moreland is better than expected, Pedey is coming back, the outfield, even JBJ, are hitting well, and Bogie is in a slump but still a good hitter. Catchers not so great, but good enough.
  3. You deserve the s***. Season to date, the Yankees have outscored their opponents by 112 runs and the Sox theirs by 34, but we are just 1 game back in part because Farrell has been masterful with the pitching staff.
  4. Aptly said. 1 back of NYY!
  5. I whined at the outset tonight and a lot in the last game, but I really liked the first two innings of this game, especially given they played a night game in Philly last night and are at Houston--best in the AL--tonight. Excellent start by Pomeranz whom I have bashed endlessly, and both times hard hit balls with RISP, to say nothing of Pedroia stealing 2b to be eligible to be RISP. Definitely rooting for our guys and plan to do no more whining.
  6. With Pomeranz on the mound, the Sox need to swing some big bats tonight, especially against the Astros who are likely to pound Pom.
  7. 3 lefty bats and no Pablo and no Leon against a righty starter.
  8. There sure was. Very helpful and surprising.
  9. To date the Sox have lost 29 games. Of those 29 losses, 20 have been in games when the Sox scored 3 or fewer runs and 15 were in games the Sox scored 2 or fewer runs.
  10. Hanley would have done no better at bat and probably a lot worse at 3B. I am no Pablo fan and probably would have gone with Marrero--who is back at Pawtucket--or the other guy. But I think Pablo is still in his tryout period, weird as that sounds (at it's really weird). Two years ago just about everybody was certain JBJ, while an excellent centerfielder, would never be able to hit MLB pitching. He played almost the entire 2014 season with the Sox and bombed. Then in August 2015 someone went on the DL or was traded, and the Sox brought JBJ back up for still one more looksee, and he hit the cover off the ball. Pablo is still overweight, but he is lighter, he is not old, and he played well with the Giants (who also didn't fight to keep him).
  11. You have definitely done that. UConn, not bad. Hope you like basketball which at UConn comes in both sizes.
  12. Pablo is going to get paid a lot of money no matter what he does. Sometimes I think he does these things--has these games like tonight--to encourage DD to let him go.
  13. Of course Pablo has to strike out on three pitches, two of them in the dirt.
  14. Great at bat by JBJ to get that walk.
  15. Terrible throws on that rbi double by both Beni and, who else, Pablo.
  16. This apparent loss is really a double loss because we are about to waste a great start against a lousy team we really need to beat because next stop is Houston, who will likely beat us like a drum.
  17. They can and will just as soon as the peanut gallery recognizes when there was no stop sign.
  18. Going back to Leon getting thrown out. Had he held at 3b, Pedey would have had the job of bringing him home, and I just saw Pedey K in three pitches, all of them sliders. Now Bogey pops to 1b. Our pitcher has the only extra base hit in 8 innings. Worse, he led off with a double and Betts, Pedey, and Bogie were unable to bring him home--our 1, 2,and 3 hitters. Where is moonslav when we need him to reassure us that specific games don't mean anything and that it's the long view that counts.
  19. That double by Sale is just another reminder that he is the only real baseball player on the pitching staff. Did you see that slide? If Wright had hit that ball, he would have been terrified to go beyond 1b.
  20. Hell, you send Sandoval when the hitting is this terrible. Pedroia was not, repeat not, going to drive Leon in--not against Pivetta, anyway.
  21. The one good thing is that Pivetta has thrown 104 pitches with 1 out to go in the 6th. Make that 107 pitches in 7 innings.
  22. moonslav is needed tonight to reassure us this is one great hitting ball club even without Ortiz.
  23. Remy said you send the runner with 2 men out and in this case hope it's a bad throw. I think it is downright silly to blame anyone--Butterfield, Leon, Farrell, etc--for Leon being thrown out at home. Tonight is the perfect night to gamble like hell on the basepaths because the hitting has vanished. 3 singles in 6 innings: are you kidding me? Sale is pitching a helluva game and our lineup is doing their level best to help the Phillies starter with the 4.58 ERA to stay dead even with our ace. 9 strikeouts, 2 each by Bogie and Benie?
  24. Haven't we just seen two doubleplays caused by our guys not tagging up or getting back to the base in time? Horrible.
  25. Meh. I think he's actually pretty conservative. Besides the mistakes are mostly made before they get to 3B.
