    Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the splitter keep Roger Clemens going (along with PED's)? The idea behind the splitter is what makes it so nasty because it's supposed to look like a fastball until it nosedives.

    It would appear Price is not missing a start, which is how I voted. The discussion above does have its own fascination, however, and is a lesson for me on what people like to discuss on talksox.

    Article on Ohtani says he has a terrific fastball, forkball (splitter), and slider and uses them in that order--that is, fastballs most often, etc. If memory serves, Uehara was a successful reliever for us with a slow fastball and a splitter, plus excellent control and fearlessness.

    Who knows? We probably won't until the lineup card is revealed. But it sure would be nice to see him back in RF and leading off in a lineup that is starting to look pretty decent. I think OldTimer said he expects this lineup tonight: Betts, Beni, HanRam, JD, Devers, Nunez, JBJ, Vazquez, and Lin.

    Holt's career OPS is .687. It was over .700 in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and .548 last year in 64 games and 140 at bats. This year it's .518 in 9 games and 24 at bats. His WAR this year is -.4.

    Interesting. Price was terrific in his first two starts. We need that Price, but not necessarily tonight because it's freaking April. As you say, we need some encouraging news about his physical status and tonight and the next 3 days will give us a clue. In defense of the "haters," I think Price is the highest paid Sox pitcher ever which is bound to bring expectations. On the other hand, we have a Yankee fan in our office and I asked him about Ellsbury last fall, and he is basically fine with him as long as he contributes and he doesn't expect him to be the 2011 Ellsbury or even the 2013 Ellsbury. So that's about where I am with Price. He's got undeniable talent which this team could definitely benefit from. His contract is a given. It's 2018 and this team is off to a fantastic start with a pretty darn good rotation, a solid closer, and a lineup that after 15 games is tied for 2d most runs scored, 89, in MLB. Time to root for all the good guys.

    Price (L) vs. Ohtani ® Early start to the game thread because these two pitchers and especially teams deserve some pregame discussion. Both teams are beyond hot: Sox 13-2; Angels 13-3. We've played one good team, the Yankees. Ditto the Angels, the Guardians. FWIW, preseason I believe the Yankees were the pick in the AL East and the Astros in the AL West, so both teams are presumably over-achieving. Both starters very good this year, but Price was rotten last timeout, April 11. Ohtani, a rookie, was perfect through 6 innings (and went 7), April 8. Ohtani does not DH for himself, at least, not so far.

    Agree: pretty tough combo, which is exactly what has made Kimbrel so effective. Not a bad lineup. The mlb channel will carry one of two games--depending on what market you are closest to--tomorrow night late. One is us at LA, and the other is Houston at Seattle.

    Meh. I just want him to pitch well and he has done so. Run support is because he often goes against the other team’s best starter, which was the case today.

    Cora is so dumb. 13-2 so far is no excuse for his innumerable incompetencies.

    Mook is day to day. X is on the DL and one commentator says the Sox should not bring him back too quickly, which makes sense to me. I hope Cora leaves Lin at SS until Bogie is healed. Then move Lin to 2B or, worst case, primary backup infielder.

    Great, great win in tough conditions. I love the way Sale plays the game with an absolute minimum of fuss. Almost never shakes off a signal. Fields his position beautifully and is fast to 1b. Today that skinny guy wore short sleeves and toughed it out for 93 pitches and 5 innings and 1 run. Great bullpen work too by Hembree, Barnes, and Kimbrel. 9 hits but none of them by our three righty bats (JD, Hanley, and Vazquez. Cora got that right when he went with the 6 lefty bats. I sure hope the FO will reconsider sending Lin back to Pawtucket when Bogie returns. 13-2 with 13 of 15 solid (if not quality--that takes 6 innings) starts and the hitting looking pretty dadgum good. If the bullpen comes around, these guys just might amount to something this year. !!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hembree, Hembree, he's our man! If he can't do it, nobody ..... well, hopefully, Cora brings in another arm. Meanwhile, a great 2 innings.

    Hembree with 5 straight outs. What was I thinking when I called him a frightener? Plus he got that K on a slider.

    Cora inserted 6 lefty bats into the lineup today, and boy did that work great. Our righty bats, including two hot hitters, JD and Hanley, could not hit diddly, at least in their first three at bats. All 7 hits came from lefty bats.

    Actually, it was probably the best thing he could do because he sure as heck wasn't going to hit it. He struck out.

    Three righty bats in the lineup today and all three have been worthless except Vazquez catching, but he just struck out with a man on 3b and 1 out. And lefty Devers did it with 0 outs.
