  1. Meh. Pom had a good year in 2017, but I never thought of him as scary or downright terrifying unless you mean us fans. He relied very heavily on that big curve and a fastball, and he usually needed a lot of pitches to get through an inning, which is why he averaged just a tad over 5 innings per start. I think he had a changeup, but didn't see it very often. We have had 17 starts this year, of which two--Price's 1 inning bomb 2 starts ago and ERod's first start--have been lousy. All the rest have been ridiculously good even though a whole bunch of them only went 5 innings. Our team ERA is 2.66, 2d best in MLB and better than any Sox pitching staff I can remember. Pom's ERA last year was 3.32. Are you sure Pom is going to radically improve this rotation or this pitching staff? My hope is that he deepens it because history shows we are likely to need a deep staff.
  2. I'm high on Cora too, but agree it's way too early, especially when this particular team is, I believe, the highest paid in MLB this year. The thing is, things changed after John Henry took over and did two key things: opened up the pocketbook and got good GM's (for the most part). I think there is no question Francona benefited from the John Henry era. So did Farrell for awhile. Those two won three WS after an 86 year lapse, but they had a lot of help. I don't know Joe Morgan at all, but he sounds pretty darn good. Cora has basically the same guys as last year except they are healthier and have added JD, and they look like a different team. Maybe he is the best, but we won't know for about six months or several years.
  3. I didn't watch much last night, but the detailed summary says a lot of Angels had line drive outs.
  4. That makes sense. I like Swihart a lot as do others, but his versatility as a catcher-infielder-outfielder is not such a great fit with this team. Of the five backups used so far--Swihart, Moreland, Lin, Holt, and Leon--he has been used the least while the team as a whole has flourished. He has in fact not been used as a catcher and maybe once for one inning at 3b. His one start was as the DH, which is also where he pinch hits in late innings with a big Sox lead. He has the fewest at bats among all position players. And goodness knows Cora emphatically believes in playing everyone.
  5. Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Nick Tropeano, lefty vs. righty. ERod pretty good in his last start, his second of the year--6 IP, 1R, 8K. Second start for Tropeano, who went 6.2 with 0 runs and 6 K's in his first start. Sox outscored the Angels 19-1 in the first two games. 15-2!!!! Sox now getting noticed. Almost everything Cora tries seems to work, but especially last night going with lefty Moreland batting 4th vs. a good lefty starter. 3/4 with 4 rbi's. Maybe his best at bat was in the 3d with the based loaded and he hit a sharp opposite field single to keep things moving along until Devers hit the slam.
  6. I've brought it up a couple of times, especially last year when the Sox were winning despite a relatively low run differential. This was also the case earlier this year only more so. Now the Sox have the best run differential in MLB. Kimmi is the one who said winning close games might be the result of luck/randomness, but a team that is consistently on the winning side of games won by 4 or more runs is probably a pretty good team. The Sox have lost two games, 6-4 to the Rays and 10-7 to the Yankees, and 7 of the wins have been by 4 or more runs. 15-2, however, is other worldly, especially given the last two games against the other hottest team in MLB.
  7. Both wins over the Angels are stunning, almost better than the 15-2. The Sox are rampaging.
  8. Incredible. One tough lineup. 6-0!
  9. Good call by moonslav except for the order and Leon at C.
  10. Surprise lineup! Betts RF Ramirez DH Martinez LF Moreland 1B Nunez 2B Devers 3B Leon C Bradley CF Lin SS
  11. I like that idea. Both parts of it because Porcello is a ground ball pitcher only when he is good, which has been the case this year.
  12. He just might do that. You said Nunez is good in LF and we have not seen him there yet this year, have we?
  13. A far better answer than I would have mustered. I normally assume the manager knows a lot more than I, plus the Sox won the AL East in 2016 and 2017. But at the end of 2017 and especially the ALDS, I had no objection to Farrell being fired. What I see now is a fresh start and a putting-behind of whatever bad stuff may have happened last year. As S5Dewey says, the results are dramatic and positive with Cora at the helm. I would remind everyone that exactly the same thing happened in 2013 when Farrell replaced Valentine. I also like the comment from someone about the game being fun. Yes, you need to be a professional, but you can do that and still have fun because it's game that we all loved playing when we were young (and not so young).
  14. Of those 4 lefty bats--Moreland, Devers, JBJ, and Lin--only JBJ does almost as well against lefties as righties. Moreland and Beni both have big drop offs. Lin is is hitless vs. lefties, but only 2 AB's. This year Nunez OPS vs. lefties is .347 (8 AB's), which is about the same as Beni's. So, me, I probably stay with the standard--Betts, Beni, HanRAm, JD, Devers, Nunez, JBJ, Vaz, and Holt (1/3 vs. lefties), but Lin would be fine too.
  15. That's pretty thin gruel, to be perfectly honest. Lester was a big loss, and I think Lackey (after tommy john) was too. Rizzo for Gonzalez was a gamble, but Rizzo wasn't even in mlb yet.
  16. Porcello, righty, vs. Skaggs, lefty. Both pitchers are off to very good starts in 2018. Both have ERA's below 2, 17 K's, etc. Could this be the pitcher's duel that was predicted for last night? In any case, it's still the two best W-L records in the AL and the two best run differentials. But I still don't think I can stay up that late. 14-2 !!!!!!!!
  17. The Yankees won the WS in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. In the 17 seasons since, no one has won in consecutive seasons. The Giants and Red Sox have each won 3, Astros 1, Royals 1, Cardinals 2, Cubs 1, Yankees 1, Phillies 1, White Sox 1, Marlins 1, Diamondbacks 1, and Angels 1. Seems to me MLB has pretty much succeeded already.
  18. Thanks for the insights. I entirely agree on the weak schedule. Were it not for Price's almost injury, the Yankees would have been swept, and even then Chapman had to save that one (and did) in the 9th. Also agree Pedey and Bogie on the DL are nothing compared to Jacoby Ellsbury being out of action all season long. His absence is really hurting the Yankees lineup.
  19. Out of sight of course, best in MLB at +51.
  20. Apropos of nothing, it now appears the rotation is set at Sale, Price, Porcello, ERod, and Pomeranz, who makes his first start in game 1 at Oakland on Friday. I believe it is still true that the Sox have the best starting pitching stats inMLB so far this year.
  21. You just like to worry and can work yourself into a frenzy when the Sox are 14-2 and Price hasn't missed a start. Pretty impressive that you can do that, actually.
  22. Sox at 14-2 still under the radar. Big MLB story today is Ohtani blister.
  23. Shocker. YOTN has it right.
  24. Just woke up. Wow. Holt with 3 rbi’s and a dinger. Price 5 innings. Mookie 2 dingers. Wow.
  25. Not bad, but I definitely prefer Lin at SS. Thanks.
