  1. Give me a break. There is nothing confusing about what has happened. Campbell got a shot right out of spring training, plus a contract. Mayer and Anthony have both been brought up. All three earned the promotion, but one is back with Worcester, and Mayer is on the IL. What you've ignored is the that time for experiments is over. It's August and the Sox are playing well and definitely in the hunt. Forget Hamilton for a moment and realize that Grissom is really competing with Gonzalez and falls far short. 2b is fixed, period. We all had high hopes for Mayer but Gonzalez is better right now. Hamilton fills a useful niche--great on the base paths and good on defense at 2b or SS.
  2. As I said, I vastly prefer Gonzalez who is excelling where and when it counts. And I'm fine with Hamilton--bad bat and all--as his backup.
  3. Excellent laydown, especially the last para on hoarding depth. Elsewhere, however, you have a pretty long list of things to fix. If you are saying no team can afford to stand pat--season to season--I agree.
  4. I would. Soxprospects write-up is not impressed with Romero.
  5. I disagree. Gonzalez is a gem. Since Mayer went on the IL the Sox are 8-2. Gonzalez OPS against righties is .703, almost as good as Mayer's .739, and his overall OPS is .897. And that's why Cora/Breslow didn't bring up Grissom but went with Hamilton who is much better on defense and better on the base paths. I honestly think some combination of Breslow, Cora, the coaches, and the Sox farm system and trading have allowed the Sox to patch up all kinds of weaknesses. As you pointed out, the Sox rotation this season has been decimated by injuries, but the pitching staff is about as good as 2018's according to their team ERA. Breslow decided to "trade" Devers because he refused to play 1b, and the Sox improved without his bat.
  6. No doubt the worries are valid--like when they brought Driscoll up to start a game.
  7. I suspect they are not heartbroken with Devers' departure.
  8. A very good synopsis of the other teams. Right now, to be honest, I don't see the Sox weaknesses. Hitting/scoring, pitching, defense, and baserunning are all good.; Two of our hotshot rookies are gone, and the Sox don't miss them. Wong stinks at the plate, but is an excellent backup catcher. I think Breslow (and Cora) have done a great job assembling this team and managing them. Of course they will hit rough spots. And an injury to any one of Crochet, Chapman, Bello, Giolito, Bregman, Story, Rafaela, Duran, Anthony or Narvaez could do some real damage.
  9. Certainly not me, and I think I've been the most upbeat going back to the departure of Devers. The article today on Ref reminds us of how everyone contributes (even Connor Wong). And that game-saving throw by Abreu last night reminds us the Sox defense is way better than those errors. Speaking of which, there is a lot of chatter about how dumb Cora and Breslow were to bring up Hamilton instead of Grissom. Hamilton has a great DWAR at 2b, is fast on the basepaths (including as a pinchrunner), and can also play SS. If you read soxprospects on Grissom, you learn he is a lousy fielder, slow on the basepaths, and a so-so hitter (a righty). The Sox already start 7 righty bats against lefty starters. And that leads back to your point. Mayer's last game was July 23. Since then, with lousy old Hamilton in for Mayer, the Sox are 8-2. He is the right fit.
  10. Not just a hot streak, but apparently a complete reversal of the last 3 seasons. The Royals had the 2d best team ERA in MLB going into this game, so the Sox 8 runs were pretty amazing. This was a Monday night game against a so-so Royals team, and the attendance was freaking 37,585. FredLynn may hate this team but the paying fans like it a whole bunch.
  11. Appeal appears to be based on the notion that the catcher is not allowed to actually tag the baserunner.
  12. That could be Alcala's swan song. He came in with an 8-1 lead and was on his way to letting KC back into the game.
  13. Yes, but he refuses to listen to me when I tell him to throw more changeups.
  14. No doubt. I just go into attack mode when FL or whoever attacks one of our guys in a game which the Sox lead 7-1 in the 7th. Right now this team is a delight to watch unless your only enjoyment is to criticize.
  15. You are ignorant. Wong has caught one heckuva game because Bello has thrown at least 3 WP's that Wong caught. On a tough night, Bello still managed to go 6 IP with 1 run (unearned). Oh, and the score is 7-1, Sox.
  16. I have said about a thousand times Duran and Abreu can't hit lefties. Falter had Duran on the ropes when he hit that dinger to deep CF. These Sox are bad.
  17. Well, that's not August's fault. It's trying to grow up. It has every intention of being another good month for Rafaela.
