  1. Dalbec is also no great shakes at 1B. He has the worst WAR, -1.1, on the team, and most of that is from his DWAR, -.9. Statistically, the next worst is Santana whose WAR is -.1 and OPS .530. However, he is versatile.
  2. 2 outs, but the tying run at the plate. Miami seems to like Ottavino's slider.
  3. I thought the Sox two best postseason--not just WS--pitchers were Eovaldi with 22.1 innings and an ERA of 1.61 and kelly with 11.1 innings and an ERA of .79. Price threw the most innings, 26.2, but his ERA was 3.46.
  4. Glad to see the bullpen is deeper than I thought. Ottavino for the save? Better is to get a run or more and not need a save.
  5. Plus the last he pitched was Friday.
  6. Good point. The fact remains: 3 pitchers for 4 outs--with 9 outs to go.
  7. We are in the 6th inning of a game being played on a day when 14 MLB teams, including the Astros, are resting. So Cora decides to rotate as much of his bullpen as possible thru this one game. So far he's used 3 relievers to get 4 outs. This is also the 8th game in 8 days for the Sox.
  8. Absolutely. The theory was Whitlock would be a long reliever, but he brings him in for 1 out, then pulls Hernandez after he gets 2 outs. It's like Cora keeps bringing in new pitchers to find one that can give up a big hit.
  9. So far the bottom five Six hitters have no hits.
  10. We got the Charles, which is the river, and we got trouble, right here in river city.
  11. 2d shot at leading off, and Arroyo blasts a double.
  12. I'm shocked, even dismayed, that our leadoff guy didn't get on base.
  13. Pretty impressive, giving up 2 singles and then setting down the next three with an easy pop-up and 2 K's. Now the only issue would seem to be pitch count.
  14. The AL East has the best won-lost record of the six MLB divisions, so there is only one bad team in the AL East. The Yankees' hitting sucks--ARod could be right about their lineup not suiting Yankee Stadium--but their pitching is pretty good.
  15. Right now the Rays have the best winning percentage in the AL and the Sox are tied with the other Sox for the 2d best winning percentage. And Chaim Bloom is the one of the architects of both the Rays and the Sox. From what I've read he literally wrote the book the Rays use, tweaked I'm sure by their current GM. No book yet for the Sox, but some pretty good moves. One of the things the movie Moneyball got right was in implying that John Henry knows how to pick executives for the Sox even though he didn't get Billy Beane.
  16. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Devers--in his first season with the Sox--hit a late season dinger off a 103 mph fastball by Chapman?
  17. It was an accident, but no one could fix the date. On the game thread of win #1, several people told me to stay with the date, so I did. Gotta love these last 4 games however. Big wins against good teams in their ballparks. And who knew the Sox had not swept the Yankees in Yankee Stadium in 10 freaking years? Who knew the 2d win would be thanks to the bottom of the Sox order with their four 8th inning rbi's? Or that Taylor would get that much needed gift K to end the 8th last night? That, ladies and gents, is mojo.
  18. This makes sense to me because JDM seems to be helping this lineup the same way he helped the 2018 lineup, which was more talented. To date, he has the highest OPS on the Sox and the most runs scored. He is 2d in rbi's, total bases, and WAR. I also have my doubts about going after a great arm. Getting Eovaldi in 2018 helped, but back then DD had JH's permission to spend almost any amount of money and unload any amount of minor league talent. Your point, with which I agree, is that the Sox have postseason potential, but probably not WS potential, regardless of any trade. No one has worked so far leading off for the Sox. My candidate would be Arroyo, whose OBP, .333, is 5th best after the usual suspects' (JDM, Bogey, Verdugo, Devers). As for Santana, despite his hot start, his OPS is now .530 and his OBP .205. Hernandez's OPS is .654 and OBP .277.
  19. Piersall was diagnosed as manic depressive in 1952 and took lithium, which helped a lot, for the rest of his life. He was a very good defensive centerfielder and once had a throwing contest--centerfield to home plate--with Willie Mays.
  20. This team and this season are from the twilight zone. Last night the bottom of the order delivered 4 crucial rbi's in a game in which ERod showed flashes of his past successes and certainly looked more confident. Tonight--you missed this--Barnes blew a save and Valdez got one.
  21. I would kind of like that rule if pitching weren't so dominant these days.
  22. Yankees in 4th, 1/2 game behind the Jays. Sox still 1 game behind the Rays, but you gotta love a 4 game winning streak. ESPN announcers are of course heartbroken.
  23. I like the format because I do not like the endless extra inning games.
