  1. See below. Mayer is out for the season for surgery to right wrist--which is no surprise. Three catchers still make no sense to me.
  2. Just announced: Mayer surgery on his wrist ends this season. This was not unexpected.
  3. The third catcher is a tad expensive--he never plays but is 1 of just 13 lineup players. So basically Cora manages with 9 in the lineup and 3 spares, 1 of whom is a catcher. I think Mayer is in fact missed because he is a good fielder and a decent lefty bat with a .739 OPS against righties.
  4. In 10 games in August Yoshida has an OPS of .820, 9 rbi's, 3 BB's, and 5 K's.
  5. Let Anthony be Anthony and not who you think he should be. He has played in just 55 games, 1/3 of a season.
  6. Toro's overall OPS is .681. But so far in August it's .471 and last month it was .574. I see your point. Maybe it's time to give Campbell another shot, this time at 1b.
  7. 45 days out of 180 is miniscule compared to Story's missed games. That said, 45 days just might work, but how can anyone be sure it isn't more?
  8. Why does the freaking camera keep going back to Bello with a towel on his head? Wilson does the job--a K and a foul popout.
  9. We all understood why from the get go. Why is he still there if he can be sent to Worcester and be available on one day's notice or even the same day?
  10. 11 pitches per IP is ace territory. 6 x 15 = 90 pitches for a quality start and the possibility of pitching a 7th inning. In his last 2 starts Bello averaged 18 pitches per IP. In his complete game it was 12.
  11. I've had it with Wong and yet another out, this time looking at a called third strike. Get rid of him.
  12. Fair enough, I did think he pitched an excellent game overall, which is why Cora brought him out for the 7th.
  13. It's games like this one when I depend heavily on Wong to make an out. Better still, a GIDP.
  14. He has the highest OBP on the team. What helps him is that he usually has a good eye--strikes vs balls--plus he makes pretty good contact when he hits the ball. When he swings and misses, he's just like everybody else. Great replay of that nab by Wong near the netting.
  15. Believe it or not, I would like to see the Sox hit a bunch more flyouts today. Why? Because I don't want another 14-1 eruption that then leads to lousy hitting tomorrow.
  16. Giolito stunk and was hit hard his first three innings. He was very lucky to only give up 1 run. Bello has been excellent in his first 3 innings.
  17. That SB was all on Bello. However, sometimes it does pay to focus on the pitching.
  18. To be absolutely honest, I have disliked Yoshida for almost all of his tenure with the Sox. That includes this season when I loved Devers as the DH. Once Devers left, however, and I realized how good this team was/is this season, I rooted like crazy for Yoshida because he could contribute as the lefty DH vs righties. I have no idea why I'm beating up on Abreu. He can hit, hit with power, field, and throw.
  19. Bravo, moonslav! You always come up with the relevant numbers. What's nice about those numbers is that we should not regard Wong catching as a complete disaster. Also, why the heck does Cora insist on a 3d catcher? K for Abreu in his first AB. Thank goodness--and our genius manager--that Yoshida bats 5th today.
  20. I think you misread that. I do think Wong is a good defensive catcher and therefore a good backup for Narvaez, especially now when the Sox are trying to be careful, so careful they have 3d freaking catcher on the roster. That said, I think we all prefer to see Narvaez behind the plate. Error by Gonzales at 1b. Fortunately, the rest of the Sox infield is professional and pulled off the double play. Gonzalez is also in a bit of a hitting slump.
