    Turner was a smart acquisition, especially for an old guy. JDM made a huge difference in 2018 and was still good afterward--but not last year.

    Actually, his DWAR at SS is -0.2, which is hardly calamitous. But I defer to your greater knowledge on that. My point remains: he's playing tonight in a Red Sox uniform, so why not root for him?

    You could very well be right. But he's available. At least 3 better SS's are not: Story, Chang, and Reyes. Last night Kluber went 3 innings because it made sense to use him with a 10 run lead.

    You must have missed last night's double play, the best I've seen the Sox pull off in several years, catcher to 2b to 1b. Wong chose that route almost certainly because Devers was nowhere near 3b, but Kike was right on 2d base, waiting for a throw, which was a tad off (low and away) but still catchable and relayable to 1b. Just nonsense, of course.

    He turns 28 next week. Forget Casas for a moment and recognize that Turner also plays 1b. He should be the DH, but right now the Sox have five pretty good hitting outfielders in Duvall, Duran, Dugo, Yoshida, and even Refsnyder. Of those, easily the worst fielder is Yoshida, so he is kind of competing with Turner for the DH slot--assuming the Sox want Casas to play 1b. So my point--actually, the point raised by others--is that the Sox could probably do very nicely without Casas or Dalbec. Turner could play 1b every day and Yoshida could DH, which would improve the Sox outfield defense with Duvall, Refsnyder, Duran, and Dugo available. Nevertheless, Casas is getting to play, I think, because he's 23 (24 in January) and appears to be able to hit MLB pitching. And don't forget that Dalbec has had his chances. He played in 133 games in 2021 and 117 last year, so the Sox have had really good looks at him at this level. Last year his OPS was .652 and his WAR -0.7.

    Completely agree. That said, however, you cannot convince me Kluber was not useful last night because he was. Cora recently commented that the Sox were again screwed by the schedule when they had to play a double header Sunday vs the Yankees and the next day start a 4 game series in Minnesota. That put extra pressure on the Sox bullpen. Enter Kluber who ate 3 innings last night when it was clear Cora did not want to use his good relievers, especially with a 10-0 lead. Also this. Kluber is in fact on the active freaking roster. Whether or not he is traded or DFA'd or whatever, right now he needs to contribute in ways they help the club. And that's exactly what he did last night. By the way, have you forgotten the 2018 postseason in which our great closer Kimbrel gave up runs right and left? His ERA was 5.91, but he still got 6 saves.

    Boy oh boy have you misread the posts on Dalbec. Everyone agrees he is tearing up AAA for Worcester with fantastic numbers (OPS over 1.000, for example). However, the problem is that the Sox currently have not one but two first basemen, and their third baseman (I think Dalbec is playing 3B) is Devers. In addition, it has been pointed out that Dalbec has hit AAA pitching well before, but could not hit MLB pitching. Plus he has defensive issues (at 3b and 1b). I don't especially like Casas because he's slow and I think overweight. On the other hand, he is in fact hitting MLB pitching and his fielding is OK. And he's 23 (vs Dalbec's 28).

    Probably not significant, but right now overall team salaries seem to be the obverse of success on the playing field-- Rays and Orioles have the two best records in the AL but are ranked 27th and 29th in team salaries. Cincinnati Reds salaries are ranked 25th, and they lead the NL Central (such as it is). Arizona Diamondbacks salaries are ranked 21st and they lead the NL West. Mets lead MLB in salaries but are in 4th place in the NL East. Yankees are 2d in salaries and 3d in AL East. Padres 3d in salaries, 4th in NL West. Phillies 4th in salaries, 3d in NL East. Dodgers 5th in salaries, 3d in NL West. Jays 6th in salaries and 4th in AL East. Braves, 8th in salaries, and Rangers, 9th in salaries, seem to know what they are doing. Braves have easily the best W-L in the entire NL and the Rangers have the 3d best W-L in the AL and lead the AL West by 5 games.

    I'm not defending Bloom, who would probably admit Kluber (whose WAR is currently -0.8) was a mistake. I'm alluding to Cora's ability to get some use out of Kluber.

    I kind of disagree. Yes, it seems absurd. On the other hand, those 3 innings did in fact “save” other bullpen arms. Kluber was useful.

    Interesting excursion into Dalbec territory: no good slot for him at Boston; plus he probably won't be able to hit MLB pitching even though he is tearing up AAA. Meanwhile, the Sox are winning--with good hitting and pitching and even defense--without Story, Sale, Houck, Chang, Schreiber, et al. Why aren't those guys missed more? In game 1 vs the Twins, Duran led off and hit three doubles, one that drove in two key runs, and was promptly removed for a pinch hitter, Refsnyder, because the Twins had a lefty on the mound. Ref walked, and Dugo hit a 3 run double to seal that win. And last night, game 2, Duran didn't even play while the Sox won 10-4. Nor did Reyes, the current fav of talksoxers to play SS (until Chang or Story returns). Instead, it was nasty Kike, the people's non-choice, who was part of a very nifty double play, home to 2b to 1b. Did I forget to mention that Crawford got his first win (5 IP, 0 runs) since April 9? Kluber went 3, giving up 4 runs, and got credit for a save!!

    Astounding play by Wong to start that double play by throwing to 2d base. I doubt that that particular double play--home to 2d to 1st--is made even once per season in MLB.

    He's tied for the team lead in K's and you want more K's? His OPS for April was .585, for May was .766, and for June so far is .894--and you want to fix his approach at the plate?

    Worth repeating: another terrific win. Great to see the bats go to work against a pretty good starter. And Crawford's 5 scoreless innings were just as great.
