  1. Sale game is a good pick. Against Urquiddy. How's the heat down there? I visited Houston a few times on business about 15 years ago and found that, somewhat like Montreal or Toronto, the city had invented ways for people to stroll down the streets, but inside--in Canada to avoid the winter cold and in Houston to avoid the blazing heat of sidewalks.
  2. I loved Mookie, but completely agree with JH's thinking, as I see it-- The 2019 Sox had almost all of the same studs (except Kimbrel) the glorious 2018 Sox had. And they still had the highest payroll in MLB. But, as we all know the pitching collapsed and the Sox couldn't even get to the postseason. So, just to stay even or maybe get back to the 2018 level, DD no doubt told JH he would need a minimum of another $50M (above the highest payroll in MLB) just to keep Mookie and replace Price and Sale in the rotation. Plus another $15M to get another good closer.
  3. I said before the series started that, based on the Nats winning 45% of their games and the Sox 55%, the Nats were a good bet to take 1 of the 3 games. So 2 was not a big stretch. I did not know (and agree it's significant) that the Nats have been hot in August.
  4. All long term contracts should be suspect if only because too many of them involve paying megabucks for someone well past his prime. Plus, of course, the player gets paid in full if he is injured throughout the contract.
  5. Despite my gloom and doom, the Sox hitting seems to be on the mend.
  6. Give me Reyes any day of the week and twice on Sundays. But, yes, I love having Urias too.
  7. Shirley you know that's entirely possible. In any case, another gem from SPLENDIDSPLINTER.
  8. Great point. I've been a little churlish myself, but I love watching the games. This game had something for everyone, even Yankees fans.
  9. Valentine was awful on the balls and strikes--so bad in fact that he kept the Yankees undeservedly in the game. But that was a really close play at the plate, so close that most of us think the reviewers at MLB headquarters got it wrong and that Valentine got it right. Just a terrific, terrific play by Wong, clearly one of the best Sox catchers ever despite those errors. Was it yesterday he started that double play by catching that bunt in the air? No Sox catcher I can remember was quick enough and alert enough to get to that bunt.
  10. Bad ump, agreed. But a tough call for anybody because it was hard to see the tag.
  11. Baloney. Urias bats 9th and just got 2 grand slams. In the Yankees' Greg Allen's case, the pitch he hit hard was high and outside and therefore a good pitch by Jansen.
  12. The pitch LeMahieu hit for the double was high and outside--just above the corner. He was lucky to hit it at all, and he actually hit it hard and pulled it. If I'm the guy in the dugout calling the pitches--or Wong, for that matter--I'm pretty happy with that pitch. The HBP was bad, I agree. But, since he did it twice, I'm wondering if it was accidental. Those two K's were fantastic, especially on Aaron Judge.
  13. It's not just not being positive. He has a problem being right. I've been wrong plenty of times myself, but with d-money it's a habit.
  14. On the replay I definitely did not think Wong was blocking the plate. He positioned himself off the plate and moved in only when the throw was right over the plate and he had not choice. I think it is possible the tag occurred before the runner's foot touched the plate.
  15. Great throw home by Devers. If the replay says he was out, he was out. Correction. Great throw by Story.
  16. He swung at 3 pitches out of the zone, not one. While it's possible one or more would have been called strikes, we don't know that. Don't forget this same ump has called balls when the pitchers were inside the strikes zone.
  17. Terrible at bat by Duran. All 6 pitches were out of the zone and he swung at 3 of them.
  18. I disagree. I don't think this ump is biased or cheating or whatever, but I do think his lousy calls are truly affecting the outcome of the game.
  19. The 3d strike called against Judge was exactly where Schreiber had thrown a pitch called a ball against McKinney.
  20. One more time. The 2d and 3d pitches against McKinney were low in the zone, but above two pitches against Story which were called strikes. Immediately after that at bat, Story had words and then Cora had more words and got thrown out. Plus don't forget that pitch by Pivetta in the middle of the strike zone (2 innings ago?) which was called a ball. This ump has in fact kept the Yankees in the game with his one-sided calls.
  21. One more time. The pitches by Schreiber called balls were exactly where (but closer to the strike zone) the ump was calling them strikes for the Yankees pitcher against Story.
  22. Not Cora's fault, not by a long shot.
  23. Those pitches called balls were called strikes for the Yankees pitcher, after which Cora got thrown out of the game for complaining.
