  1. There's a big league adjustment period nearly all players go through that you have to be patient with. Do you remember Pedroia's first month or two? Hopefully we'll still develop Johnson.
  2. Have you not watched Brian Johnson getting better each outing? As for the playoffs, though we just acquired Eovaldi, it will be interesting to see if one of E-Rod or Wright comes back in time.
  3. So sad about E-Rod. He really could have reached 20 wins this year.
  4. In other words, a member of the John Wasdin and Joe Kelly club.
  5. I'm actually expecting them to release Pomeranz when they activate Eovaldi. Someone has to be taken off the major league roster so that they stay at 25 right?
  6. Except that it marks another starting pitcher in Beeks that we didn't take the time to develop.
  7. If Velazquez had started last night's game instead of finishing it, I believe we would have won. I hope Velazquez gets the next start over Pomeranz.
  8. I was hoping they'd put Velazquez back in the rotation.
  9. I'm cautiously optimistic that Wright will be back sooner rather than later.
  10. It's sad. One year he's great, the next he's gone.
  11. Neat display. One question: why do you list batting average on balls in play, over say just batting average or on-base percentage? I've always considered batting average on balls in play a marginal stat, since not putting the ball in play is pretty important to factor in.
  12. I'll do some "crow eating". Bradley is now hitting .210 with a .642 OPS. Still woeful numbers to be sure, but he's trending up and I see him passing Nunez (.644 OPS) and Leon (.652 OPS) soon after the break. He could conceivably end the season a somewhat respectable .230 AVG / .715 OPS.
  13. I don't even want Pomeranz in the bullpen if his velocity is down. If he can't dominate at AAA he really has no business coming back to the MLs.
  14. My understanding is that starters need to work up to going 5-6 innings, and Velazquez has been working relief so they haven't tried to stretch him out like that. I'm sure given a few weeks of starting he can work up to at least what E-Rod gives us in his typical 5 2/3 outings. Brian Johnson similar; he's not quite at 5 yet but I'm sure he'll be at 5-6 soon if he stays in the rotation. Speaking of E-Rod, he was so dominating in that last start, looked like he was finally going to give us 8 or even 9 innings, and then bam he's on the DL.
  15. I don't think we need to move for a starting pitcher. Johnson, Velazquez, and Beeks are available, and I'm a believer that there's never a wrong time to foster young talent. We have such a poor track record of grooming a starter. And then Wright isn't far from returning as I understand it.
  16. You are right he is up to .208. Look I'm going to fess up. Last night, it was bases loaded, 2 outs, and JBJ up. I turned the radio off, figuring rally over. I was wrong!!!
  17. My hope come playoff time is that the bullpen is augmented by Johnson, Velazquez, and either Wright or Price, whichever is out of the starting rotation. And Kelly has been very good this year. If Pomeranz actually comes back to be effective, that's just icing on the cake. As would any contribution from Tyler Thornburg. I agree though I expect a move for a left-handed reliever.
  18. What is the last time the Red Sox had 4 starters with 10+ wins by the All-Star break?
  19. I'm enjoying the Swihart vs. JBJ batting average competition, yes.
  20. It is definitely feeling that way! I underestimated the 2013 Red Sox right up until the end. I don't think I can limit my enthusiasm for the 2018 Sox however.
  21. Like I said, Nelson and Scherzer were both available and not getting a ton of attention. It was a weird offseason.
  22. We only got Price an offseason later. At the time, when we badly needed an ace, we didn't get Lester or Scherzer. And I couldn't believe there wasn't this huge surge from every team to try to go get Scherzer.
  23. Kluber clobbers the Yankees and Price redeems himself, could be an amazing night of baseball. With a JDM homer as a cherry on top.
  24. Am I a bad person to admit the steroid issues didn't bother me? Nelson Cruz homers since 2014: 2015: 44 2016: 43 2017: 39 2018 (so far): 22 What a great pickup he would have been. But can we at least agree that not even trying to sign Scherzer was a huge mistake?
  25. No one could have predicted that? JDM is simply hitting like he did last year. I remember reading an article early in the offseason that JDM was actually the better hitter than Giancarlo Stanton, and I was giddy that the Sox were his prime suitor. It just took way too long to finalize the deal. Now for the other hitters, I read predictions that Beni would hit .300, that Bogaerts would start to develop power, and that Betts would bounce back to his 2016 self. So, I'd say the real surprise is that Betts is even better than his 2016 self. Everyone else is playing to about what we expected. Except JBJ. Still waiting for that hot month.
