  1. You are right that the market is the determining factor. It's free enterprise so it's no different than any other industry. I just hate the guys on both sides of pro sports markets even if that makes me irrational and inconsistent with the fact I support the free market system.
  2. Jeez, I joined this forum to talk baseball and it turns out I walk into a middle school recess pissing contest. Freakin ridiculous.
  3. It's not the Lester situation necessarily that I have an issue with. I just think no pitcher is worth more than 4 years for in excess of $20 M. Obviously that is a minority opinion and possibly irrational and maybe I should put myself in the shoes of an owner who has money to burn where the $ just don't matter, but I haven't been able to get my head around that yet. Pitchers are fragile and can age quickly and unexpectedly. Just ask Cashman.
  4. You're right about the pitch framing. Farrell made a comment about his ability to almost imperceptibly move his glove to steal strikes. And I love his emotion when the pitcher gets in trouble and then wiggles out of the jam. His enthusiasm is contagious.
  5. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in a meeting of Sox brass discussing the progress of guys like Owens, Rodriquez, and Swihart. They will never talk honestly and publicly about their true expectations so any attempt of fans to speculate might as well be like going to the gypsy fortune teller.
  6. Miley's FIP was 3.98 the last 2 years, his WIP was poor, and his BAA was .269 last year in a weaker league. I don't expect him to be awful, but I also don't expect much more than an innings eater.
  7. I agree. I'm not upset he left, but I'm sure I'm in the minority. I actually thought the so-called low ball offer the Sox gave him was a very fair starting point. He's not Kershaw or King Felix. I don't even think he's a number one on an AL pennant contender. He may do well for a couple years in the NL where the number 8 and 9 hitters are cream puffs, but we'll see what happens when he hits the middle of his contract. I could be dead wrong and be a poor judge of his potential, but I don't get paid like Theo or Ben so it's inconsequential.
  8. I'd rather over-pay a shorter term contact than give a guy a long term deal. Look how the Yankees are hamstrung by the ridiculously long term contracts they have issued. But they screwed themselves twice by also over-paying for the extra years. That's why I hope Cashman sticks around.
  9. If you appreciate players that do multiple things at a very high level, check out D'Angelo Russell (freshman) of Ohio St and Kris Dunn (soph) of Providence College. They are both tall point guards who are quick/fast, score, rebound, and assist with a classy style that isn't show boating. I used to be a PC season ticket holder so may be a bit biased, but I never liked Ohio St until I saw this year's team play. Now I'm a fan.
  10. Anybody pay attention to the European leagues? I'm a big follower of Bundesliga, La Liga, the Premier League, and to a lesser extent, Serie A. I think NBCSN has opened up a huge new fan base by bringing the EPL to the US. And next year the Bundesliga comes to Fox Sports. For just pure football entertainment, today's Wolfsburg - Bayern game was a great example of what's in store next season.
  11. You hit the nail on the head. "Decent" maybe be a more descriptive adjective than "crap", but I catch your drift. A lot of successful teams have taken that approach. Maybe occasionally spend $4-6M on a reliever, but other than that, there is no need to do that.
  12. Really? There is no "in between" or room for disagreement for you? You must have loved Haywood Sullivan. By the way, Tudor and Ojeda were very average pitchers in the AL with ERAs around 4. Once they moved to the weaker hitting NL, they made out quite a bit better. That's what scares me about Miley - a guy with a 4+ ERA coming to the stronger hitting AL.
  13. I met Eddie Andelman one time at the track when he owned Foxboro Raceway. Let's just say he wasn't the same personality in person as when he was on the radio. I did enjoy Bob Lobell and Upton Bell when they were together on WBZ back in the old days, though.
  14. A.J. Pierzynski showed up early to Braves spring training today. Since he had trouble with passed balls recently, he brought his new glove.
  15. Both guys are very young. To contemplate trading one in the next couple years would be crazy. Let the guys play a lot of games at Boston/Pawtucket and see what the situation is (both offensively and defensively) before jumping to any conclusions.
  16. Personally I have an aversion to contracts longer than 5 years or 4 years for a pitcher. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. And thank you kind sir. http://www.new-jersey-leisure-guide.com/image-files/thumbs-up.jpg
  17. Francesa dropped that tidbit when he wasn't complaining about FoxSports1 pre-empting his TV simulcast so much. http://www.richardtimothy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/09-Raised-Eyebrows.jpg
  18. I wasn't trying to imply that Marion was in Ernie's class, only that he was one of the first tall shortstops that I had heard about. Size for a SS back in the 40s and 50s was a rarity, I think.
  19. Thanks Bellhorn. Freddy was as smooth as they come - his swing, running style, and throwing.
  20. Just be glad the Sox GM isn't Cashman who will add an extra year or two to the bidding just for the heck of it.
  21. Probably the best thing to do is avoid sports talk radio in order to maintain your positivity. I deleted their buttons from my car radio about 4 years ago.
  22. I'll believe Swihart is a 1B possibility once the thought comes from somebody other than a writer.
  23. This Sox team could be compared to the old days when they mashed the ball, but had trouble keeping the other team in check. We could be looking at a lot of 6-5 games this year. I wish I had a better feeling about Masterson having already over come his physical issues from last year. And Miley - could he be another John Tudor or Bobby Ojeda?
  24. I heard Girardi included spring training games in his win prediction total. Hal didn't know the difference. But that's just a rumor.
  25. It was easy to root for Ernie. More ballplayers should take a cue from him. I remember him as both a shortstop and first baseman, and he had a distinctive way of holding the bat straight up. He wasn't your normal SS - tall and powerful ... similar to Ripken. I don't think he was the first of the "big" shortstops (Marty Marion?), but he is the first one that I recall seeing play. Another of the great players to come out of the Negro leagues. Now he gets to play two every day.
