  1. I'm so sorry to disappoint you by starting the topic. I'll tell ESPN that you'd like them to stop creating headlines for any team outside of Boston. They might not understand why somebody with a user name of the Yankee CFer is making the request, but I'll let them know anyway.
  2. Did you even see Orr play throughout his career? You compare the assists of a centerman with a defenseman? I'm at a loss.
  3. The Polo Grounds because I saw the Mets play there when I was a wee lad - the short porches in LF and RF, the cutout in CF with the stairs up to the clubhouse, the walk down along Riverside Drive and descending to the park, the catwalks out to the second deck. Just awesome Although from what I've seen of Ebbets Field, it was probably the coolest ballpark I would have loved to have gone to. I assume that's what you are leading to. My mother was born in Flatbush and my grandfather used to play semi-pro ball in Ebbets Field so I'm well aware of what it meant to have a park in the neighborhood and have players living all around the area.
  4. Who is being hypocritical? Nobody even mentioned steroids until you brought it up. Eight years of ERA over 4.00 doesn't earn you squat no matter how many championship teams he was a part of. And being home grown shouldn't give anybody an advantage either The Yankees have had probably a 50 guys play for them for extended years that were better than Posada and Pettite. One thing I loved about Posada was the opponent could always rely on Jorgie to have a passed ball at a crucial time. And how many pitchers didn't want to throw to him? If those two numbers get retired, why not Bobby Richardson, Roy White, Tony Lazzari, Tommy Heinrich, Nettles, Charlie Keller, Lefty Gomez, Moose Skowron, Red Ruffing, Righetti, Vic Raschi, Allie Reynolds, Willie Randolph, Hank Bauer, Stottlemyre, Eddie Lopat, Winfield, Ralph Houk, Mussina, Chris Chambliss, Tino Martinez, Matsui, Joe McCarthy, Miller Huggins, Paul O'Neill. I'm not saying those guys deserve to have their numbers retired although a case could be made for a few of them, but they all are, at a minimum, as good as Posada and Pettite, and most were better players or 3 were highly successful managers.
  5. Russell dominated defensively and was a great fit for those Celtic teams, but put him on another team and I wonder how he would have made out. Red had the other 4 guys funnel everything into Russell and he ate the offensive players lunch. If that wasn't the style of the team he was on, he would have never seemed as great as he was.
  6. The edge of a crappy part? The surrounding area of the Bronx has been blighted for 70-80 years. It's safe during game times, but I wouldn't stroll around at any other time. I haven't been to the new Steinbrenner Palace, but I tend to agree with you that the old Stadium was more about baseball than today's Fenway. People go to Fenway to say they have experienced the atmosphere that they've read about in magazines. It's the thing to do in Boston. It's like the old days where going to the theater to see a hit show was the cool thing to do. The monster seats, the tables up on the roof in RF, the luxury suites, all the little niceties added by Henry, Werner, Luchino distract people from the reason they are at the game. I guess the added revenue makes it possible to help pay for a quality team, but I'll sit at home and enjoy it more.
  7. Yeah, there is such a plethora of non-whites at Fenway.
  8. Yankees are retiring the numbers of Posada, Pettite, and Bernie Williams. A .270 hitter who was a bad defensive catcher, a pitcher who had an ERA over 4.00 eight times in his Yankee career, and Bernie who probably deserves it. Four catchers have had their numbers retired - Berra, Dickey, Howard, and Munson. Three pitchers numbers are retired - Whitey Ford, Guidry, and Mariano. Posada and Pettite are to use a commonly coined term, the JV team, compared to the previously honored guys. What a joke. Looks like Hal knows less than George did about Yankee history. The only reason I mention this is that I grew up in North Jersey in the pre-Steinbrenner era and I understood the tradition. I eventually moved to New England, Steinbrenner bought the team and made the team into something that the old time Yankees would be embarrassed to be a part of, and I grew to think of him as a buffoon and made it easy to root for the Sox. Sorry for the rant.
  9. I'm not trying to resurrect bad memories, Fred, but this is my favorite baseball call of all time. My favorite old dump of a ball park.
  10. You don't like parking in a gas station for $50 and being blocked in? One time we thought we found a great place to park over by the Museum of Fine Arts for free. The only problem was it had valet parking which we didn't know about. My friend's car was found in Roxbury 3 days later. If you think Fenway is dirty, you should have gone to the old Garden. If there was a concert the night before a Bruins or Celtic game, the vomit would still be in the aisles.
  11. At the end of the season, 2 trophies will be given out for predictions. One for accuracy and one for ... lack thereof. http://psnprofiles.com/lib/img/games/0d876d/trophies/1L9e6241.pngAND Your fates may rest in Wade Miley's hands. At least its not Stephen Drew's hands.
  12. So you are a zombie fan? If zombies weren't so ugly, I'd post a pic, but I'll take the high road. http://m7k.org/forums/Smileys/express2/fonz.gif
  13. Theater seats with soft cushions isn't exactly reminiscent of the old Stadium. Are they trying to make people comfortable because the product on the field isn't worth the money and not very entertaining?
  14. I spent many a day at Shea, the old Stadium, and Fenway at various times of my life and Fenway is easily the most uncomfortable with seats irrationally positioned of any park I've been to. But I love watching games on TV from Fenway and letting other people sit in those foolish seats.
  15. Orr's assist totals were other-worldly. 87-102-80-72-90-89 in 6 consecutive seasons.
  16. Just talking Canadiens (with an "e"), I'd take Beliveau over the Rocket, but that's like comparing a champagne worth $500 with a bottle of scotch worth $500.
  17. Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers Orr Magic Johnson - a 6-8 point guard who played center when Jabbar got hurt in the finals Hitter: Ruth - best player I never saw; Aaron and Mays - best players I saw Pitcher: Koufax
  18. Interesting read of baseball's worst contracts. Some serious money is being flushed down the drain. http://grantland.com/features/worst-mlb-contracts-2015-alex-rodriguez-ryan-howard-prince-fielder/
  19. Sounds like you bear a grudge or have issues with Theo rather than examining what's in process in Chicago.
  20. I heard a couple cats going at it in a snow drift yesterday. It was not pleasant. Oh ... herd ... never mind.
  21. I wouldn't laugh too loud. Theo is building a contender in Chicago just like he did in Boston with the difference being he started with a lot less in Chicago. Their farm system was awful and the major league roster had only a few decent players. Now they have one of the top rated minor league systems and bonafide threats at most positions on the roster. They may not be ready this year, but next year they should be as competitive as anybody in that league.
  22. I don't know anything about Montero so are you saying his reputation is being not a very good handler of pitchers? I'm surprised that Theo brought him in if that's the case.
  23. I don't think Porcello starts out as the #1, but even if he does, the only time you are sure to match #1's for each team is opening day. Off days and rainouts make starting every fifth day totally unpredictable so seeing matchups of #1 vs #1 during the season is a crap shoot.
  24. I had to make that decision when I was in my late teens but I decided I wanted to spend my summers working in a snack bar at a swim club because the scenery and social life was better. Actually only half of that statement is true. I'll let you figure out which half.
  25. People get suspended here? I never noticed that there was a mod, but then again I'm not very observant. As for being crazy, I just hate what money does to the game. Guys making 15M/year profess love for their team and city, then jump at the first chance they get to make more. The egos these guys have is amazing.
