  1. You do realize that the Vegas odds before last season were 25 to 1. You would not have found many Sox fans who could have predicted that Boston would have the best record in all of baseball. On top of this to beat Tampa, Detroit and St. Louis like the way they did it was beyond belief. What worked last year does not guarantee that it will work again. Every team needs key players to carry on the winning ways ... Ortiz is at the end of his career, Ellsbury was playing for his big contract. Lester needed a come back year and he went through some ups and downs. The Sox are a top tier market team ... obtaining Tanaka will make the team a lot better for next season and the 4-5 after that.
  2. Do you not think that Tanaka could be a huge improvement over Peavy, Dubrount or an unhealthy Buchholz? The real cost to Tanaka is the posting fee ... we have owners who are very good business people ... I guess that they will decide. If we sign Tanaka it makes Boston stronger and the Yankees weaker ... that is worth something in and of itself. Do not be surprised if you see Ellsbury in Pinstripes next year.
  3. Doji ... you really believe this? Napoli put up Napoli numbers last season. When the Sox signed him to 3/39 he was a year younger. The Sox intended him to play first base when they signed him. Now Napoli is a year older and he is going to get a 4 year deal. I do not think so.
  4. If the hip goes he will not be playing bat boy. The QO was not such a risk for Boston ... if Napoli accepts and plays a full season in 2014 it is adding a mere 1.1M over his 2013 pay. If he goes down with hip problems then it cost Boston + 9.1M worse case scenario. Less then was was spent in 2013 for Hanrahan and Bailey.
  5. The problem did not lie with your post ... it lied with the post that was replied to ... to talk about any player without taking both his offensive and defensive assets into consideration is a failed argument.
  6. Easy to say UN ... Buch is not a question mark due to his health issues? Dempster is predicable I give you that .... we know he is going to suck. Lester is on the roster for next season only ... do you think that Sox will give him the big contract after that ... not very predictable if you ask me.
  7. I will bet a steak dinner that the Sox do not sign Napoli at 39 / 3 guaranteed money contract. Nothing has changed with his hip condition between the beginning and end of the 2013 season. Nada ... think Bo Jackson when you think hip conditions. I have a feeling that Nap's is looking at a series of 1 year contracts for the remainder of his career. Base salaries of 4-5M with incentives.
  8. I agree ... I do not see what the big fuss is over McCann to be honest. Not at the kind of money that is being discussed. Besides paying him it will cost a high draft pick to boot.
  9. Hello Peter, It is great to hear from you. We have something called Red Sox Nation. When the Red Sox go to play against other teams it is not uncommon to have more Sox fans at our aways games then the home team that we are playing. There is not good reason why Sox Nation cannot have a presence across the pond. Glad to know you. Mark I myself am a Barcelona fan but I could develop an interest in Liverpool as well.
  10. Doji. I think that vjcsmoke summed up the Sox SP situation fairly accurately. Lester is back next season ... after that who knows. Buch was hurt for much of the season and he did not finish strong in the playoffs. If you are only looking to next season maybe we do not need a player like Tanaka but if you want to look out 5 or 6 years I think we could definitely use him. Looking to the 2014 season the Sox are going to have some offensive drop off if we loose Ellsbury, Salty, Drew, Napoli. One way to offset a drop in offense is to improve upon your teams starting pitching and bull-pen.
  11. True that. He can also work on speeding up his game.
  12. But there lies the problem ... Center Field is a extremely important defensive and especially when playing at Fenway ... just ask any MLP pitcher.
  13. It has been my contention for a while now that obtaining Tanaka in the off season might be the most important upgrade that Boston could achieve. I hate to see Ellsbury or Drew leave the club but acquiring Tanaka for his prime years (next 5-6) would greatly lesson the pain. It would allow Boston to deal Dempster and Peavy for prospects and shed some payroll at the same time (Boston will need to eat some of their salaries for 2014). If they cannot move Peavy he would be an expensive but legit # 5.
  14. When you think about it more we can source out 5 positions for 10M ... Center, Left, SS, 3B, C and to take things further we can deal Peavy and Dempster for prospects and probably fund the these 5 positions with money left over from the savings of Peavy and Dempster assuming the Sox will need to eat part of their salaries. We will also be taking Hanrahan and Bailey off the books ... savings = 11M. In the end the Sox can come in 2014 below the 2013 payroll.
  15. I have no issue with WMB's glove ... he looks solid at 3rd. The issue is if you keep Drew at Short you have to have a place for Bogaerts to play and that would be 3rd.
  16. What if WMB is on pace to hit 30 bombs playing at AAA Pawtucket next season? Would he have value to be traded then? The thing about baseball is that you have to build your team for 2 seasons ... the regular season and the post season. Error's may not seem like a big deal during the regular season because of the number of games played but an error in the post season can be the difference between winning and losing a series. This is why players that provide better defense have increased value during the post season ... think Drew and Ross.
  17. The problem with the Ellsbury situation to many fans on this forum is his agent. Not too many feel that he will sign with Boston if Boston is not the highest /best offer. Maybe he shouldn't. I think that there is more long term value to play your entire career with one club especially when you are winning championships. Players like Yaz, Williams, Rice ... Pedroia own Boston and have many opportunities when their playing days are over. You cannot blame Ellsbury if he took the best deal on the table .... $ per season and # of Years. He was a big big part of 2 championships now.
  18. If ownership does not mind ponying up the posting fee they really should make a bid for Tanaka. Although the odds of repeating are very low adding Tanaka would certainly improve the teams chances.
  19. I hate to see Ellsbury go but I am willing to accept the inevitable. Let the JBJ era begin.
  20. There you go again MVP about the money. The free market sets a players value. The Sox do not have any long-term contracts beside Pedroia. Try not to worry yourself so much about the money let BC take care of that.
  21. I hope that you are right ... Henry Owens is a compensation pick and he might make it to Boston next season.
  22. I love Pedoria but you are comparing apples to oranges.
  23. Do not be so sure sk .... Salty earned 4.5M this season. 14.1M is more than 3 x's what he made this year. This is life changing money for most people.
  24. It will be interesting to see how Tanaka does next year. We shall see if he turns out to have #3 type stuff. Henry Owens could be a nice surprise for the Sox next year.
