    It is a well known fact that some of the sports writers and radio hosts get some of their material from us. And frankly, its getting old. Muggah and I have been considering patenting our stuff so that its not stolen and reproduced for free on a regular basis.

    Or perhaps the reverse is true. My guess is that Oswalt could very well retire rather than pitch here for the Red Sox.

    Obviously you are of the opinion that how much of a fan you are can be measured in the number of years you have been following the team. I think that is ridiculous. Fred follows the team around the country to take in games. Do you? I don't, and I have been a Sox fan since the late 1950s. I do not consider myself to be a better fan of the team than SBF, and you shouldn't either.

    And reminding me of my pre Red Sox fanhood is getting a little old, don't you think? Seems a lot of people have that problem Fred. You zeal quotient as a Sox fan is measured by some by the number of years that you have been on board with the team. Seems absurd to me.

    No copout. If you ask me where I think the team will finish, I would also say third place. If you ask if they have any chance to compete for second place, I would answer in the affirmative. I would not have them favored to finish second, but its possible. Hard to believe you are having trouble with this concept.

    I think Muggah is perfectly capable of responding to the question of whether we have a chance at competing for second place all by himself, without your help. If its all the same to you, I'll wait to hear from him.

    With all due respect madam, all you can really say is a lot of nothing of substance. Between what passes for humor or sarcasm I have yet to read one of your posts where you actually contribute an opinion to what the Red Sox can do to better themselves or offer give an opinion with relation to the team. Sometimes you ladies on these Red Sox boards can really be pills in this regard. Looking forward to seeing you tell us how you see the Red Sox shaping up this season and why. That would be very refreshing. None of this is sexist. Whatever else it is, sexist it is not. And Fred is right about some posters here not having much original to say, preferring instead to complain about what others have written. Personally, I have no problem with that tact. Write what you want as long as you are discussing the issues.

    I don't consider calling someone "a lady" to be sexist. Its like calling a male a gentleman.

    Bard and Aceves do not have a lock on a SP slot. They are trying out for that position. They could easily end up back in the pen, especially if somehow we get a #4 SP.

    Lets see what he has to say about competing for second place. I too think that a third place finish is most likely with a win total of about 89 games (we got the same team talent-wise as last year IMO), but I also think we can possible get to second place; ie, we can compete for second place. Muggah? Comment?

    Who thinks that we are not able to compete for second place? Identify them, then we can ask them directly. I don't know anyone in that category, though I admit I could be wrong.

    No problem with fans of any team. Just surprised. As to your other comment, its idiotic.

    I got no problem with her except that she has a bad habit of insulting people (=me) by laughing at serious posts in an attempt to discredit them rather than making her point and debating the issue. No one likes to be laughed at; most would consider it rude. Twins fan? Here? Why?

    The intelligent thing about our apparent current strategy is that, assuming we are now under the cap (and NO ONE outside the organization seems to know that), we could go either way at the trading deadline. If we are in the race then sure, lets get another good SP. If we are out of it, we circle the wagons and wait till next year. I am not at all unhappy with what has been done so far this offseason. I think it makes sound business sense.

    True, dat. As a corollary, our team has much less room for error than either the Yankees or the Rays...or the Angels or the Tigers or the Rangers. Just look at who they hired to fill in to provide "depth". Its pathetic. It would be an incredible stroke of luck for us to pull this season out of the fire.

    I am a realist, not a pessimist. I think that as long as the team stays under the cap we are on the right track. We got rid of a manager and GM who were not doing a good job and replaced them with the kind of manager we need; the jury is out on the new GM so far. Also, to date Wakefield and Varitek have not been invited to join the team; thats a plus too. The needed housecleaning has begun. On the other hand, our pitching is no better than last year, a year in which we won 89 games and finished out of the playoffs for the second year in a row. We have only three decent SP, and our bullpen is questionable. While we will probably score enough runs to win games, our catcher, SS (who is our SS again??) and our RF are potential black holes in the lineup. We have been picked to finish below both the Yankees and the Rays in the early analysis. Sorry folks; I just don't see that we have improved enough to warrant pompoms and pink hats this year. Hope I am wrong.
