  1. Yes, we ARE screwed this year. We are not getting any quality pitching to help us unless one of the bums we hire does an about face and suddenly becomes competent. That could happen I suppose, especially in the pen which is always a crapshoot. Epstein has screwed this franchise for years to come because of his long term expensive contracts with guys like Lackey, Matsusaka, and Crawford-and probably Beckett is in that category too. Even if Bard and Aceves become SP how many innings do you really think they will be tossing this year, their first in the majors as SP? 160? Less? So we will need to be 8 or 9 SP deep, and when you are that deep you can bet the lower tier consists of sub-bums like Wakefield and Miller. We are just going to have to tolerate the losses this year and hope that enough $$ comes off the books over the next 2-3 years to enable us to secure good pitching talent and hope that our GM (who I regard as suspect since he was trained by Epstein) exercises good judgement in that selection.
  2. There is no one out there who can be had for a reasonable price (ie the amount of money the team has to spend) who will help us significantly this year. Hence, we signed Andrew Miller.
  3. What do you think we can get for Miller? Honestly, he is a worthless bum.
  4. Yeah, but WE got Andrew Miller.
  5. Nope. Not this year. Maybe not next year either. But in 2-3 years we should, hopefully, become relevant again.
  6. He will be here next year. There are NO other teams out there willing to pay him the "amount of respect" he thinks he deserves. In staying on the roster next year he will prevent us from having the flexibility to give some of the other position players a breather by DH'ing for the day, he will block Lavarnway from DH'ing some of the time, he will prevent the team from getting two good draft picks for his aging body, and he will continue whining in a self-important manner just like he is doing right now. He is a cancer on the team and is preventing us from completing the necessary housecleaning job we have to do.
  7. :thumbdown
  8. Lets all hope that Morosi is wrong. A long term contract with CJ Wilson is exactly what we do not need. We already have Lackey and Matsusaka in that category. I do not trust Wilson, especially in the ALE.
  9. But we were mediocre, at least by the standards set by Red Sox fans, however unrealistic those standards are. Sox fans expect a competitive team every year, and over the last three years, that just hasn't worked out. You can lead the league in offense, but if the pitching is 8th in the AL you are generally doomed.
  10. I don't trust Oswalt or Kuroda (injury standpoint), and I don't see them spending the money to get Buehrle or Jackson PLUS Cuddyer unless they are willing to go significantly over the luxury tax threshold. Bullpen arms are a crapshoot, and if Aceves starts, we lose one of our best BP arms. That must be replaced with someone else who is good. Right now we have Bard and Aceves and, I believe, Morales who is doing well this winter playing in South America. Wheeler was offered arbitration and I haven't heard if he has accepted. He would be a plus IMO. So we would need three or four more. We will also be hobbled by the presence of Jenks, who will take up a valuable spot. You want to fill it out with Atchison or Albers? Not me. Hey, its possible, but its going to be a lot of work and it will take a lot of luck.
  11. Sure, if we can get TWO good SP (we have only Beckett, Lester, and CB as decent quality SP right now and we really need about 7-8 of them going into the season), a RHH OF, and a re-do of the bullpen-including a great closer- we could make a run. That is a very very tall order. I don't think we can accomplish that all in one offseason. Furthermore, the clubhouse attitude has to change. Thats just a lot of work. Don't get me wrong. I hope I am wrong. But right now this team is a mess (created by Epstein and Francona).
  12. I suggest you PM Seabeach Fred. He has been to a whole lot of games there and would give you an honest assessment of what its like. I found it just fine...and the weather is great during the whole season.
  13. He isn't going to throw another pitch for this team. He will be traded for some midlevel prospect by the deadline.
  14. Its all going to be how he handles adversity, which in Boston is defined by a three game losing streak. IMO his hiring is 75% for the purpose of cleaning up the clubhouse to maximize the chances of success in a couple of years. Making the playoffs this year is a bonus, and winning a ring is just something I cannot see happening with this group of players. Two years; maybe three.
  15. You guys are not in the minority. I think most people think Valentine was the best candidate available and now that he is hired, most would approve of him. Of course, that only will last until his first screwup. Boston is a tough town to work in.
  16. I have been there a couple of times. Seabeachfred has been there probably 100 times, I would guess. He lives in SoCal and I used to live there. Pretty good place to watch a game, though I don't much care for the city of Anaheim-too much concrete, smog, cars etc. I don't think you will be disappointed by catching a game there.
  17. I heard he will be the new baserunning coach.
  18. Bobby Valentine: "in the end, this is not a democracy" Gotta love the guy.
