  1. Criticize him all you want. For now, I like what he is doing. Disagreements like this make the board spicier. I know of a board that is monotone, mostly, and vanilla, if anyone is interested. This will be playing out over the next few weeks, Crawford and Valentine. Crawford can only hide for so long. It will be interesting to see what his side of this is when he finally opens up.
  2. No, its actually spot on. Good tactics. I expect that it will put a bug in Beckett's butt and generate capitulation on Crawford's part. They will realize that the Country Club in no more. Its all business now.
  3. I really don't care what his tactics are as long as he succeeds in making that a more professional team. Whatever else Bobby V is, he is smart. I suspect he is in the warning shot stage, but would be willing to escalate if need be. I watched what happened last year, and I watched the last three years in which we failed to win a single playoff game. Now some of that is due to factors beyond anyone's control, but some of it is due to the MEFIRSTS on the team. Wakefield is a prime example. The nerve that selfish fool has to say that the fans "deserve to see me go for the record". We are back in the 25 players/25 cabs stage. I think Valentine is going to fix that before he wears out his welcome, which he is likely to do in a couple of years. I don't think you will ever see John Lackey staring down his new manager from the mound the way he disrespected Francona.
  4. Saunders had a good year last year pitching for the DBacks. But before last year he hadn't had an ERA under 4.25 since 2008. What does that translate into pitching in the ALE at Fenway? Wakefield also sucks, but is much cheaper. Both guys suck. Whether one sucks more than the other is a reasonable topic for debate; neither is a guy I would want on my team, even as a #4 SP (=Starting Pinata). I expect Wakefield will be back, but not Varitek. I would prefer Garza to round out the rotation, but our FO isn't spending money this year.
  5. The fact of the matter is that its tough to win with pitching that is "meddling", or mediocre. Its a hell of a lot easier with great pitching and a little timely hitting than trying to bash your way to a ring. Another fact is that the owners are very reluctant to buy the kind of pitching that will put us over the top. That combination does not bode well for this season.
  6. You bet they knew what they were getting. They knew it and they knew they NEEDED it. I agree with Lucchino. Valentine is the right guy for the job, at least for a couple of years.
  7. I am calling ******** too. How many playoff games have we won in the past three years? How are we doing with our pitching=how did we finish in ERA compared to the rest of the AL during the first three years? Its great that Epstein inherited a very good team and made it a little better, good enough to win in 2004. Wonderful. I will give him credit for 2007 for the most part. Now we see what has been eating at this team, probably for longer than just 2011 when it was discovered. Just listen to the language these freaks are using-Wakefield ("the fans deserve to see me go for the record"-imagine if a New England Patriot had said that!), Beckett, Crawford, and who else that we don't even know about. This crew needs to come into line or we will continue to have results like the last three years. Every sane person knows that they guys getting along and being professional is very important to success. You can have your opinion, which I disagree with, but dude, you cannot take mine away from me. ********. Ha.
  8. This rotation must be decided in spring training. Whoever is the most effective pitcher gets the ball on opening day. No more of the "good 'ol boy network" where past achievements are emphasized over current performance.
  9. Interesting tidbit: the Red Sox as we know had no problem scoring runs last year. We were ahead of the rest of the AL in runs and OPS, as the author of this thread has mentioned. On that team, who was the leading RF for us in terms of production as judged by OPS? Darnell McDonald. (Reddick was slightly better at .784, but he is no longer on the team-and after July 1 his OPS was just .714 compared to 1.198 before July 1) For RF with a minimum of 100 ABs, McDonald was 14th (of 21 RF who qualified) in the AL with an OPS of .704. Drew was 20th at .617. The point is that even with McDonald out there as our starting RF this team will score lots of runs. The problem was never with production; it was with preventing the other guys from scoring. We finished 9th in ERA in the AL. Until that gets fixed we will keep getting disappointed by this team. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/position/rf/league/al/sort/OPS/order/true/minpa/100
  10. In fairness to those on the other side Elk, here is what Valentine COULD have said in response to being asked if he and Crawford have talked: "I think that communication between players and their manager is of the utmost importance, especially if its a new manager just coming in. This is something we will be emphasizing as the season progresses. With good communication comes an exchange of ideas that should help us achieve better results on the field" And so forth. He could have dodged the question or answered a different question than the one that was asked. There were many other ways to handle this. Frankly, I like the way he chose to handle it: hang the malcontented self-centered insubordinate schmucks on the team out to dry. This is on Crawford now. Its going to be very very tough on him unless he capitulates and explains himself with a full apology to his new boss.
  11. For my part, I don't care WHO the manager is. Crawford owes it to his BOSS to return the phone call. Satan himself could be managing the Red Sox and you STILL return calls from your boss. Whether Valentine acted correctly in calling him out on it is a separate issue.
  12. Two good points SoxSport: Montero is really only a chip for the AL. He is not really considered good enough defensively to make the grade as a position player right now. And sure, Kalish, as good as he is, could be used as a chip because corner OF are more easily obtained and less valuable than proven good SP. If we could get Garza for a package centered around Kalish I would do that in a heartbeat (depending, of course, on the composition of the rest of the package).
  13. Yup. That was a BS move by our owner. It was worse than unprofessional; it was unnecessarily demeaning and insulting to a guy you are paying big bucks to play ball for you for seven more years. Henry made a mistake and my guess is that he would like a do-over for it. But you can't put the feathers back in the pillow...... That said, Crawford is WRONG to behave like a self-centered punk. The two issues are unrelated. I know you don't like Valentine and that your opinions are biased by that opinion, which is fine-but that does not excuse Crawford's behavior either.
  14. This thread should be removed.
  15. And its EXACTLY the kind of attitude that must be extinguished on this club
