Francona was one of the most over-rated managers in history. He simply did what Epstein told him to do and won 2 WS with players provided to him by someone else, including, in 2004, players mostly from a different GM. He repeatedly made the same mistakes over and over again during games, proving himself to be an incompetent in-game tactician. Although he admittedly managed well during the postseason games, every year his stubborn errors cost his team losses in the double digits. In the end, his players refused to put out for him and refused to accept his authority because, in fact, he had none. He was too busy shielding the misfits on the team from the media to gain control of the clubhouse. The Cardinals saw this and refused to hire him. Had he been as good as some people think he would have been a shoe-in for that job. Guess what: he isn't.
I wish him well, but I am very glad that he is gone.
