  1. Jeez, the way these articles mention it it's like it took 10 minutes and then it was all set. I wonder how much truth there is to this? Even though it didn't take 10 minutes (and it talk a decent chunk of the offseason) it still sort of feels like someone with the team should have identified and fixed this over the Summer when it was happening....what I thought the goal of sending him to AAA was in the first place. I suppose the most important part of this is seeing if any of it ends up ringing true.
  2. I agree they need a middle of the order guy, but personally don't think Hamilton was that guy. Not really sure if the right guy for the long term was there this year at all. While the offseason this year wasn't anything special, and they ended up really close to the salary cap again, this offseason did allow the team a lot of flexibility in the future to fill positions in based on how guys from the farm work out.
  3. It'd be excellent if all these guys come up and play well. To have a core like that would mean the Sox would hardly have to do anything in free agency...... They'd be able to fill in remaining gaps with "sexy" pitchers and other position players and not feel too bad about it as long as they performed. This is something that they should have stayed focused on doing instead of whatever it was they ended up doing.
  4. Well, in the last couple of years there's no doubt that many outfields have been better. The Red Sox have had some great outfields over the years, it's sad to see that not happening anymore. More recent outfields for the Red Sox have been poorly planned and injured more than healthy.
  5. Honestly, it wouldn't be very hard for Napoli to play more games than Youk did his last couple of seasons in Boston. We'll see how being a full time first basemen treats Napoli, and if his hip ends up effecting his hitting at all. I'd be glad if he played more games and outhit Youkilis though. He's definitely got a shot.
  6. I was under the impression we'd see Gomes platooning with someone in left field. For $10 mil it seems sort of silly and expensive, but yeah. Are most people thinking that Gomes is going to be our starting left fielder most of the time?
  7. Screw trying to find them by the way. Whoever actually spent time out in this weather deserves some credit, I'm tucked away hiding in my building during lunch. This wind is outrageous.
  8. I can't imagine him catching after hearing that anymore either. Sounds like the contract they gave him will work out well. If he is able to play fine, he just goes on the market next year for someone else to take a chance with him. If not, the Red Sox don't end up paying all too much for him. Sounds like he'll give the Sox a little value for a little while in a worst case scenario....doesn't sound like he's destined to fall apart day one. To me, not being able to catch greatly diminishes his value, but what can you do at this point? Guess we'll have to see how he does defensively at first while playing there every day.
  9. It's funny, my father mentioned something to me a few days back when he called and alls I could think was "Ticket sales can't be good for them to do that" but I can't remember what he had mentioned to me. Pretty miserable day to be doing this as well, I agree. Hopefully catch them near Government Center around 12:45-1:00 (assume that's where they're hopping the Green Line from, and that's when my lunch is), I'd enjoy some free tickets.
  10. Yeah, don't really see it happening and it's kind of too bad. That 1B/OF would have been a good fit. Don't really see anyway they'd get him now with the Napoli signing. Not sure why they're so set on the left field situation but they do seem to be okay with the platoon there.
  11. If Middlebrooks comes out of the gate and hits similar to how he left off last year I like this a lot. Though, it'll be interesting to see what Drew can do as well. If Drew were to start hitting too I'd probably move him up to that 7 slot and move them down to 9. Either way, something similar to this would probably be best.
  12. Glad he didn't end up back here with us. Padilla is the kind of guy I feel that in the past we would have tried to continue onward with, and he'd end up finally falling apart mid-season. Glad to see that didn't happen. Agreed that he probably wouldn't been able to have made that much here, but it's still a little surprising to me. Seems like a team here would have been able to give him a decent offer that would make it worth staying here too. Either way, we're away from him now too.
  13. That is a relief. Guy never seemed like he still had it in him since he had come back. Tough when you throw a sinker that hangs around the belt most of the time. With that said, I'd still like to see us get some minor league depth signings done for the rotation.
  14. By cheap I hope he means next to free. Looking at his minor league numbers he never really hit for any average there either. Looks like he has a little pop in his bat and that's about it. Plus, as last years numbers suggest he probably isn't the right fit for this Red Sox team. While it doesn't seem likely that Napoli will be catching games now that this hip thing has been dragged out so long, does anyone think we'll still see Salty traded? (Before the bashing Salty thing starts up again and to clarify) I'd like to see Lavs get some regular playing time this year, but with Ross and Salty it looks like he'll end up only coming up at the end of the season again unless something weird happens.
  15. Thank God. That should make us all happy. Just don't know what we're all going to talk about now though.
  16. Interesting stuff in this thread. I don't really care a whole lot for the book and probably won't read it, seems more Reality TV than baseball. I am interested to see what kind of information comes out of it and will check that out in ways other than reading the book though. From the few quotes, it seems kind of believable. They definitely did go from trying to build a winning team to just bringing in names that people knew (at the very least that's what they did). Either way, this should be pretty interesting.
  17. Also agreed. He's still at an age where he could potentially bounce back and be awesome too. One of my favorite pitching matchups of recent memory was him v. Cueto back in a 2011 regular season game. Great game to watch. He could potentially end up becoming a great steal.
  18. Apparently he's in talk with the Marlins now. At least one team has it worse than us.
  19. In the .270-.280 range average wise, 18-20 homeruns and 90 RBIs. I'm going a little high on the RBIs since it looks like he'll be batting third. More people to hit in than normal. Maybe 18 stolen bags.
  20. Not hearing any serious talks on anyone. They've inquired on Morse, not sure to what ends. Cafardo was saying they did talk about Garrett Jones with the Pirates but the Pirates held him to a lot of value, so it sounds like they're probably out on him if that report is true.
  21. Papi is likely to see sometime there any way you bend it, with the way interleague play is going to work this year. At this point I don't know how safe I would feel putting him there any more than that though. If worse did come to worse it is an option.
  22. I don't think that just because he sees the upside in two of the players means he thinks it's the greatest choice, or even a choice he wants them to make. I think he's simply playing out a scenario. Just because you don't hate something doesn't mean you like it.
  23. Interesting. That makes Jones not seem like such a good bet then..... Better off going for a guy like Morse or Morneau if that's the case. I don't know what the trade market or market in general looks like for right handed platoon players at 1B, but I have to imagine it isn't much. Edit- Maybe Morse is a good option, he could end up being that right handed middle of the order bat. Too bad he only has one year on his contract and the Nats will probably want a lot because of his numbers last year. He's another guy I can't see trading a lot for..... No reason to give up any worthwhile prospects for one year of first base. The more and more I think about this, the crappier the situation is.
  24. I don't know a whole lot about how the draft works etc. so I'm going to pop on in here and learn. I need to pay more attention to minor league stuff anyway.
  25. Agreed. At this point he'd be a decent fit. His name did come up once during the whole Hanrahan thing..... I assume the Sox know what they'd be giving back for him at the very least. Garrett Jones for the right price is one of their better options personally. Edit- Cafardo is saying that discussions involving Garrett Jones during the Hanrahan trade never got far because the Pirates place high value on him. Good fit maybe but if he isn't cheap he isn't worth it. Wonder what the price on Morneau is like?
