  1. Does anyone else think a performance like this from Aceves was inevitable? I recall a few "sweaty hat" games in '11 where he completely lost control. He's always been better out of the 'pen and that's where he should stay.
  2. Exactly, Bards problem this spring has been the "one bad inning" and walks. I think Bobby V needs to give Bard a fair shot to prove himself now. If he succeeds then he becomes a decent/good starter under team control for a few more years, if he doesn't then he goes back to the pen. If he is successful it could save the Red Sox some of that cap space they've talked so much about this offseason. Instead of paying upwards of 10 million for a starter in '13 when Dice-K departs and Lackey is still ineffective, they could have a very good bargain with Bard. The worst case scenario is he loses a couple games in April and goes back to the pen but IMO now is the time to give him an extensive look as a starter.
  3. Hey everybody, I'm glad to have found this forum as it looks to be unmatched by any other. Talking Red Sox baseball is my favorite hobby so I feel like I'm at home on TalkSox.com! I'm glad I've found a place to talk to people that love the Sox the way I do. It's hard to find that when you live in enemy territory (NY) but it makes it fun busting on the hardcore Yankees fans... Message me if you wanna know more, I'll be spending alot of time on here so feel free!
  4. I agree with you on this, The scrutiny of Daniel Bard has been horrendous. The media is literally acting like he's getting torched every time he throws a pitch. If they knew anything they would know that in games he has STARTED, his ERA is 2.70, 1.10 WHIP, and he's given up just 5 hits in 10 innings. The walks are a concern (6 in those 10 innings) but I think it would be crazy to cut the cord on him prematurely without finding out if it can be corrected. Also it's not like he has had a problem going deep in games. He went five (on par with the top 3 starters) in his last start and looked stronger in the 4th and 5th then he did in the first. His next start will surely be critical and with all the media stuff he's likely to tank just from pressure, they aren't helping his transition by questioning his ability.
  5. With Bobby V calling the shots I think this is impossible to predict. I actually like Bard for the fourth slot and I think he should get a longer look. The fifth spot could be Aceves,Doubront, or Cook if he is ready by mid April when they need a fifth starter. Like I said though with Bobby calling the shots it looks like Bards chances are getting slimmer by the day. Yesterday I read several articles stating that Bards transition has been a failure to this point. I just don't see it, if you look only at the numbers then you could say that but if you take away the disastrous 2 2/3 inning relief appearance his ERA is 2.70 with a 1.10 WHIP (5H 6BB 10 IP). It seems to me that Bobby V is all too willing to pull the plug on this experiment.
  6. I'm not convinced that it's a mistake just yet. Bard's ERA in the games he has started this spring is 2.70, with a 1.10 WHIP. The walks are high but the hits are very low. I think Bobby V needs to at least give Bard a couple turns in the rotation come April. If he succeeds then the Sox have a starter they are paying $505,000 and if he fails they have a setup man or closer they are paying $505,000. Why not take a chance on him now?
