I agree. But why do you see Pedroia's extension as too big now? Porcello's was 4 years, 82.5 million - 20.625 avg. Pedroia's was 7 years, 100 million - 14.286 avg. Pedroia's was longer, obviously, but with a considerably lower AAV, and the total was only 17.5 million more.

I think it's a little early to say Henry is shutting the door on spending. If he was really intent on shutting the door I don't think he would have approved the Eovaldi signing. And there are still a lot of unsigned free agents.

I think they should probably do something to tie the revenue sharing to payroll spending. There should be disincentives for pocketing the revenue sharing and tanking.

The fact is there are some pretty clear signs that Kimbrel is in decline. 3 of his last 4 seasons he's had an fWAR of 1.5 or less. And he's not getting any younger. He's definitely durable and he gets the job done most of the time. But he's probably not going to earn his next contract.

The thing about a guy like Moreland is that he's sort of a neutral asset. He makes 6 million or so and that's about exactly what he's worth. There's no surplus value to appeal to another team. For a team like us that has title aspirations and is also very rich, it doesn't make a lot of sense to trade him. We might have to eat a couple mill, so we've gained 4 mill in budget space but lost 6 mill of player value. We shouldn't have to do things like that.

Your ideas are good for richer teams like us, but they don't fit in with the overall desire for parity. In theory parity is good for the game because it gives more teams a chance and gives more fans a reason to stay interested.

Don't be nervous, honestly. Lots of time left and a lot of unsigned relievers, not to mention trade possibilities. Last year this time we were getting antsy about JD Martinez. Turned out OK.

I just can't see the logic in the idea that they decided to allocate $6 million + to Steve Pearce and zero to the pen with Kimbrel and Kelly departing. I don't buy that for a millisecond.

There will be more than Barnes and Brasier at the back of the pen. You know it, I know it, we all know it. That's some argument about the fragile 8 game lead BTW.

Honestly I think everyone knows exactly what you're saying and agrees with it. It would be crazy to have a championship contending team like the 2019 Red Sox should be, and to completely neglect the back end of the bullpen. Some people just think we can address that need without spending a further bundle of money. I'm quite sure this is the foremost thing on DD's agenda right now.

There's nothing to learn, honestly. Pedroia's deal looks bad because he got injured. He certainly won't be the last player whose contract ends up looking bad because they got injured.

He's waiting a long time then. When the 2019 season is over it will have been 4 years + since he was our GM.

There's another reason it's tough to judge Ben. He's never been a GM before or after his 3.5 year stint with us.
