Personally I think we're prejudging a bit. The NFL games in London seem to be doing pretty well. -

As far as run-scoring across baseball is concerned, it's up about 7.5% from last year. From 4.45 per game to 4.78 per game. That is a significant increase.

Let's face it, statistically our chances of catching the Yankees for the division are remote, miniscule. They may get even more so if the Yankees acquire Stroman or MadBum or whoever. -
Your reasons for questioning the signings are fine. I'm just tired of hearing about how they were only signed for their World Series heroics. There was some rationale behind the signings. They look bad at the moment, as signings usually do when the player gets injured.

It's not really impossible. Adjusted stats like OPS+ measure the player against the rest of MLB.

Most people liked those signings at the time. And there were a number of teams in on Eovaldi.

Reasons we could talk about all day. What I'm really talking about in this case is the philosophy of postponing a needed move until the trade deadline.

In your trade scenario, if Shawaryn turns out to be a good reliever, you gave up years of control of a good reliever all for the sake of saving a small amount of tax. That stinks.

That seems like a LARGE number at just about the halfway point. To determine how large you'd have to compare to other teams and to past seasons.

So essentially we give up Shawaryn in return for $1 million. This is one of the most peculiar and unlikely trade ideas I've ever seen. Original, though.

It's like JH called DD into the office after those signings and said 'Dave, do you realize you just spent your entire budget for this year?' Dave: 'Oh. Whoops. So much for the bullpen.'

He got off to a flying start by signing Pearce and Eovaldi. Little did we know that was going to be it. It does almost seem like there was a mixup with the budget numbers or something.

It's true. We keep waiting for the starters to 'hit their stride', but for the most part it just isn't happening. Sale has been an enigma. He had that stretch where he had 40 strikeouts without a walk and it looked like he was back to full awesomeness, but then started scuffling again. Such is baseball, I guess. Crazy freaking game.

There were other reasons to think Eovaldi could be a better pitcher going forward than his track record suggested. He added a cut fastball to his repertoire and he had a dramatic improvement in his K/BB numbers. His ability to stay healthy is certainly a question, can't argue that one.
