  1. Oh, if it were so, I'd be giddy with joy Cubs won't even give us Garza. BUT, if SD will take Lackey, ship him FedEx.
  2. They should get some statisticians to take everything Lackey did this season and find a way to aggregate into a SINGLE evaluative stat. Call it the "JLR" for "John Lackey Rating"
  3. yes, to echo the chorus: these guys aren't hired for their brain cells or mental acuity. But, Lester throwing Francona under a bus is sad and pathetic. He should've said nothing and kept it to himself if he was holding alliances with the FO. This has nothing to do with whether Francona was a good or bad manager; it's just not good etiquette. For krissakes, that same Francona handed Lester the ball to start Game 4 of the 2007 WS. Guy dropped a few notches for me; the price of going from wide-eyed kid with major league dreams to multi-millionaire in the 0.25% Yeah, not even 1%.
  4. It's a tough call. All those players in that 3 step chain of events in the 9th inning of game 4 in 2004 were Theo signings. But, any 1 of them could have gone the other way - Millar doesn't walk, Roberts never gets to steal, Mueller doesn't get a hit. The odds were all a game of chance, imho. It's like saying Wakefield didn't give up the HR to Boone in 2003 and Duquette could look like genius. Or Pedro got through the 7th inning. Ditto.
  5. Cuddyer seems to be the prime target at this point....let's see.
  6. I personally wasn't a fan of the Crawford signing vis-a-vis it was TOO much money. Way too much. My first reaction was: why do we need another speedy LHH OFer? It was part of an Epstein plan to not re-sign Ellsbury. And now it backfired. We need RHH OFers; we play 81 games at Fenway 'fer krissakes! I'm sure Cherington is a nice, smart guy. But, they need to bring an outsider to win respect and clean house. That's my humble opinion.
  7. Good idea. We can have our own 'alumni of sawxheads' thread here! I'm up for that. We can keep our old banter going, and some of the folks here are welcome to join us. Be my guest, brennan if you want to post a sawxheads alums thread in the Off Topic area. PM me when it's up.
  8. I will give it an even chance that Beckett will resort to 2010 form. Not wishing it, but you look at his game logs and he is consistently streaky. You don't know when he's gonna go on a 10 start super tear or go the other way.....after the ASB he became average again.
  9. Hi jung. New here. I 3rd that. I don't know who will step up to be a leader next year. The "C" thing is not a baseball thing. I agree. It might be in their best interest to bring in a veteran guy to play off the bench. Someone like a Sean Casey-type. He was well-liked everywhere he went; that's why they called him "The Mayor." A real team guy who kept his teammates loose. Guys like Millar or Lowell. Wonder if they could entice Lowell to be a bench coach....
  10. This is not an original idea with m, but I'm here in NYC and over the months many NY sports pundits have chattered about the Mets and Sox swapping different scenarios. The Mets are in major salary dump mode because they are bleeding money. Do you go swap Beckett for Santana? Wright is exactly the kind of 3Ber we need as well. Also, think about this: Lackey's numbers will drop in Citi Field; it's a pitcher's park. It's also the NL..... Dare I say it? Beckett/Lackey for Santana/Bay....even if Bay flops, the other alternative is that we'd still be eating Lackey's money anyway. So, it's a washout.
  11. Wow, this is a bigger mess than the BP spill. THey need an outside interventionist to gather up the whole org, bring them to a retreat for a week, and fix this. I'm serious. My suspicion here is that Henry/Werner were on their own islands; Lucchino was too busy primping himself for Selig's job; Epstein was given the run of the playroom and then caned Francona to throw a little diversion for his pre-planned exit. It's clever - he's gone and the ownership has no clue what's going on. In all of this, they ALL are to blame, except Francona imho, who was just a lackey (pun intended) in all of this. I think Tito knew the mess upstairs and knew he was a goner and just said "F--k it." He got his zingers in there before he left. And he had every right to. Gotta go with an outsider like the Mets did with Alderson. Cherington will just continue the culture of disorder, no matter how he tries to fix it. He's still an insider....
  12. Hey Fred, I see you've been over here. Much more civil, huh? Some of the poliies were starting to get downright creepy in that brainwashed kind of North Korean sort of way. Disguising blind worship with "reasonable" critique. I could only imagine how their illusory mirror must have been completely shattered in September. Heck, we were ALL just hurt as fans by the collapse, but it must have been electroshock to some. I won't say we saw it coming, but I'll say we weren't surprised one bit that it did. Whatever....they have a new board with "rules" where they can just keep apologizing to each other to death. As for Tek and Wakefield; they will be gone. 100%. I wouldn't worry about it. I think the Sacred Cowism will be the first order of business to clean up.
  13. THanks for that, ORS. It does clarify it better for me. I'm not as up to speed on a lot of the fangraph breakdowns as some are. There's a little "old school" in me (though I'm not THAT old) that likes to just sometimes go with the gut on signings. But, in this day and age of big baseball biz, that's not the best way to approach things. What I mean, I guess, is that a lot of the guys we had on the roster this year had the justifiable sabermetrics, but the 'human factor' entered it and we saw the team collapse. You can't measure egos. If I were GM and knew that guys like Beckett would be that disruptive or Lackey would alienate people, I wouldn't do it.
  14. New here, folks to some of you, but have any of you read Gordon Edes piece? Seems that he is either on the sauce or has been afflicted by early onset dementia: http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7099013/sounds-crazy-red-sox-saved He has truly lost it, predicting nothing short of a WS ring next year. It's not the boldness of the prediction, but his actual 10 point analysis of how this will be achieved.
  15. LOL, pumps. But it's OUR choke job. No one will take it away from us. Let us wear it with pre-2004 pride!
  16. I have repeatedly stated over the years that I was of NO opinion of Epstein. It is impossible to gauge some GM's performance. What if he only had $80M a year to spend? What if he had stayed in SD? What if Millar never drew the BB in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS? I also feel that stuff like WAR, though useful, feels a bit arbitrary. Of course JD Drew will have a decent WAR over a AAA guy. But, is that the "replacement" we should be comparing a $14M a year guy to? Why don't we compare him to all STARTING MLB RFers? That's my issue with that number. Epstein can go to the Cubs and build a record a of futility or he can escape by the hair of his butt like he did in 2004 when he was 2 outs away from a sweep by the NYY. That 8 game tear that one us the ring was a thing of astronomical odds and Epstein did NOT engineer that.
  17. Pumpsie, check your PM over here.
  18. Ortiz is already stirring the pot by grumbling in an ESPN interview that he's not sure if he wants to be on the team next year. "I don't konow if I wanna be a part of that mess..." he says. Likely a ploy to get his 2-year deal.
  19. More stragglers floating in, Pumpsie. Lackey must go at all costs. It's a big one, but it's not a lost cause even if they can extract some middling arm for him. If you ate $35M of his salary and dealt him to the Astors for their #4 guy, it would be an UPGRADE. I will say this repeatedly until next season starts: Lester worries me. But, right now, this team needs to get its FO in order and find leadership there first.
