  1. "The Los Angeles Dodgers underwent a period of turmoil in management in 2011 and 2012 that began when Major League Baseball seized control of the team from owner Frank McCourt on April 20, 2011 and ended when the team was sold to new owners on May 1, 2012.[1] Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announced that the takeover was due to concerns over the team's finances, and a loss of confidence in the ability of owner Frank McCourt to run the team.[2] Selig announced his intention to appoint an overseer to supervise the day-to-day financial management of the Dodgers. In June, as the Dodgers struggled to meet payroll, Selig rejected a TV contract that would have pumped money into the organization. This led to the Dodgers filing for bankruptcy, and being forced to negotiate a loan with the MLB to keep the club operating. After a year of negotiations and court proceedings, the dispute ended with the sale of the team to Guggenheim Baseball Management LLC.[3]
  2. First of all I don't believe there were hundreds of sales over the past century. But over the past hundred years several franchises have lost tons of money and were forced to move due to declining attendance and financial problems. The vaunted LA Dodgers were bankrupt five years ago and were under a MLB mandate to reduce debt before the new ownership group took over. So it does happen perhaps more frequently than one realizes.
  3. If you read the history of the Yankees I believe CBS sold the Yankees at a loss to Steinbrenner
  4. Sometimes fans forget, to ownership it isn't just about winning, it is also about making money and appreciating the value of the franchise. If the Sox ownership can keep accomplishing the latter two it doesn't matter how much money they spend so long as they turn a profit and the franchise keeps appreciating.
  5. It doesn't matter to Sox fans who wears the laundry so long as they produce. I think many sox fans myself included have soured on Price long ago. Many including me, haven't forgotten nor forgiven him over the Eckersley fiasco. I think many also feel that JBJ is simply too quixotic at the plate. So if Boston trades either one or both I don't think fans would mind so long as they get fair value in return of players who would keep the team in contention. I think what is really going on is that the FO believes the current system of luxury tax will disappear after the next CBA so the term reset may be meaningless in the long term.
  6. I am beginning to believe that the Red Sox have no intention to get below the 208M LT threshold. While the Sox will try to reduce payroll to a degree my sense is that they realize Sox fans will not tolerate a rebuilding team. In pure economic terms I think Henry believes it would cost them more in lost revenues across the full spectrum of their operations including NESN then any luxury tax. I think a part of this calculation is a belief that the new CBA in a few years will totally restructure and possibly eliminate any Luxury Tax. If this is the case then I don't see any big trades coming
  7. Took.a river cruise with similar itimerary last year. Prague is awesome Hope you had good time. Expect one could take an even longer trip and Bloom would still be considering moves.
  8. I was still a student at Holy Cross back then. All of New England stopped to watch the Red Sox play. Several of the Jesuit professors cancelled their classes and postponed "blue books" so everyone could watch the sox.
  9. Having attended my first Red Sox game in 53 (Went to see the Boston Braves before that ) 04 and that decade was the best. But the most electric was 67 because it was so unexpected. I believe the phenomenon known as Red Sox Nation was born that year.
  10. Really now! I don't think the vast majority of millions of red sox fans who endured 86 years of frustration and agony would agree. I certainly don't!
  11. The baseball is another issue. However the ball is the same for everyone and is within the rules. Using electronic means to steal signs isn't within the rules and is considered cheating. I have heard or seen no one connected to MLB either players, coaches, GMs, ownership or sportswriters equate the two.
  12. The Commissioner is quoted as saying that the investigation was primarily focused on the Astros. In an article published yesterday in the Athletic Ken Rosenthal argued that the investigation should be expanded to include 2018 and 19. Today the Commissioner said that the investigation has expanded to 2018 and 2019. He also said that they will follow the evidence to wherever it leads. It doesn't sound that this investigation will be a quick one. I think it is also fair to believe that this investigation won't be confined to just the Astros. I think this could easily become the biggest scandal in baseball in a generation. The repercussions could be severe. Not to be given to hyperbole or sensationalism but after hearing the commissioner speak I suspect he is going to come down on the guilty parties like a ton of bricks.
  13. As long as he is Red Sox manager, Cora's problems with the commissioner's office would also be a problem for the Red Sox. One can not dismiss any connection so facilely. For one thing Boston will be under increased scrutiny if nothing else. I also have to believe ownership isn't exactly thrilled about being connected to this scandal even if indirectly.
  14. Disagree! While Cora probably won't be suspended because that would penalize Boston, many MLB analysts expect a fine, if the commissioner determines he was involved.
  15. All good reasons to keep JDM away from 1st except when he gets on base.
  16. You are just jealous because Canadian political scandals are so dull by comparison.
  17. The stuff that Kennedy and Johnson pulled make the above three look like choir boys! Do the names Sam Giacana and Billie Sol Estes, just to name two, ring a bell with you guys younger than 60
  18. A player and coach got into. a fist fight in the clubhouse then a couple weeks later two relievers went at it.
  19. Re Pittsburgh the owner is rumored to want a wholesale reorg. I think Cherington' s first move after hiring the field Mgr will be reorg baseball ops. From what I have read. Pittsburgh is a mess. Cherington faces a huge challenge both on and off the field.
  20. It may be hackneyed but it is neverless true,"Rome was not built in a day"
  21. Shaughnessy basically called the DD firing well before anyone else published anything. He wrote Francona's book. It is obvious he has excellent sources inside the clubhouse. Like him or hate him no one should dismiss what he writes out of hand.
  22. Depending on what they can get for him, I certainly wouldn't miss him. He is right up there on my least favorite Red Sox players list of the Henry era.
  23. Steve Buckley's take:https://theathletic.com/1380089/2019/11/14/buckley-this-electronic-sign-stealing-foolishness-is-a-headache-the-baseball-world-doesnt-need/ His last line says it all "If MLB’s investigation backs this up, then those who are guilty — Hinch? Cora? Beltran? — need to be fined, possibly suspended. Not so much for the infraction but for the stupidity."
  24. Haste makes waste!
