  1. The whole Aviles Bard Ciriaco Lavarnway issues makes me really wonder about Cherrington's ability to judge talent. BV and Cherries butted heads all year over talent. In virtually every case, Bard Ciriaco WMB etc, BV proved to be the better evaluator of talent. I believe Cherries's ego refused to allow him to accept the advice of someone more knowledgeable and experienced than he. I think that is the great untold story of this year that is Cherries undercutting his manager by not giving him the better talent he requested that was available in the organization.
  2. McClure never should have been hired in the first place. He was originally hired to be a scout. His hiring seemed to have been a hasty move, done without much if any fore thought. Regardless of what any one thinks of BV, McClure has to take some responsibility for the Bard fiasco and the wholesale collapse of the starting rotation. After two failures in a row, lets see what Niemann can do. If I recall the pitching wasn't half bad while Mcclure was away from the club and Niemann was acting pitching coach.
  3. Finally the worst pitching coach in recent club history is axed.
  4. One thing that Sean McAdam noted was that Shoppach has a reputation apparently for clubhouse problems which may explain his frequent trades.
  5. So much for that sabermetrics nonsense.
  6. The catcher's era is disputed by some (not me) but the difference is startling over the last two years. Both Varitek and Shoppach had significantly lower "eras" than Salty. It easy to see why. Yesterday he miss played a foul ball not the first. I've seen him drop way too many foul tips. The list goes on. His defensive lapses mean extra pitches with all that causes. So it isn't just his framing pitches or his pitch calling. He just isn't a good defensive catcher.
  7. Except for a few BV haters that seems to be the consensus.
  8. Good points both Pal & Jung. How about the best data of all. The old eye ball test. Just watch Salty and Aviles play the field , its painful!
  9. I thought the trading of Shoppach was nuts. Salty is an awful catcher. He can't even catch a foul ball. I find it incredible that a team that supposedly is so committed to sabermetrics would make such a decision in view of all the data.
  10. I concur I have thought for a long time that baseball ops basically falls in love with a player and their analysis of his capabilities. They stick to that opinion regardless of any subsequent data or performance. They also consistently underestimate if they estimate at all a player's character in assessing his ability to play in Boston. The result is they assemble a collection of players who are never equal to or exceed the sum of their parts. In general, I believe Cherrington is an awful evaluator of talent or of people. In this whole debacle, the media has generally given Cherrington and baseball ops a free pass which I think they don't deserve.
  11. JH likes different voices. There is work and there are policy decisions and personnel decisions. I think in terms of organizational policy and major personnel decisions that Lucchino is not the final word. It was the three who hired BV and vetoed Cherries choice for example. JH has embraced data driven decisionmaking and consensus management style. That is how this organization is run and that is what is broken and become dysfunctional.
  12. If they are true why not. Name me one team who said if only we had a better second baseman we'd be a contender. In the one game wild card game, the two teams aren't going to worry about who starts at 2nd base. No manager will setup his lineup going into the playoffs to make sure so and so starts at 2nd base.
  13. I am sure you have heard the saying "you can never have enough good pitching" I have never heard any one who knows anything about baseball say " You can never enough good second basemen." The reason why: Pitching wins championships.
  14. I think all sox players including Pedroia are trade bait at this point.
  15. I agree the entire organization above the on field manager needs to be totally reorganized. I do not know if Lucchino is part of the problem or not. I don't know if Cherrington was his choice for GM but I tend to think not. From what I have seen I have come to the conclusion John Henry likes to have different voices. I don't think he ever empowered fully Lucchino, Cherrington or BV for that matter. JH has to change his style which is probably unlikely. In anycase no matter who else goes or stays Cherrington needs to go. I simply don't trust his judgment nor advice. I think he is a poor evaluator of talent and people.
  16. The entire Bard fiasco is further evidence that Cherrington is incompetent. If anyone should be fired it should be Cherrington.
  17. This deal is further proof as if none were needed just how over his head Cherrington is.
  18. All this proves is that nothing has changed since last September. These players have an inflated sense of entitlement. The way I read the whole incident is that they objected to Lester being held accountable and forced to face the consequences for his performance or lack thereof. That's why this team is so unlikeable. As for Pedroia he may be a hustler but he acts like an immature spoiled child and he isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier.
  19. The Rooster was one of the best defensive shortstops in all of baseball during the late 70's and early 80's .
