  1. Entrepreneurs have to believe. They have to believe that their businesses are going to make it and that they are doing something that will be categorically good for investors, customers and employees. So while a software based business may look like throwing caution to the wind once you have put yourself into such an environment, you really cannot blame Schill for trying to do things that give that business the best chance to succeed. I would question the wisdom of the state for dumping so much of the program funds in such a risky venture. It was their job to safeguard the states funds and do the most they could do to generate jobs from the program. While we are all really on the outside looking in I would have to say that the state officials involved did not handle either responsibility the way I would have wanted if I was a RI resident. The impression I have is that Schill has been very involved in the business. Their organizational structure seems to have a few holes and my suspicion is that Schill may be filling those holes as that is not uncommon when a founder is still involved. If that is the case he might have been better served leaving all that to Management professionals so that he could spend all his time being the front man and guiding the "vision" of the company since I think it is his vision. but whatever happens unless he has done something "wrong" (without putting any definition to wrong) you really cannot make this about Schill. Some folks are probably going to look at it differently if the company does fail and takes the states loan guarantees with it.
  2. Well ya' I tend to agree with you here although I am sure there are nuances to these games that only real gamers are into that make one more attractive than another. As I understand it, Schill has always been a very active gamer and I think he figured that he both knew who to hire and knew what to incorporate into his game to make it attractive. Now when I saw a short video demonstration, I did not see anything to get excited about...more knights wielding more swords and slaying more villains and monsters and what not. However in the demo Schill talks about having added this feature and that one and he is talking about stuff that is all chinese to me. I believe as I said earlier they cannot or have not been able to rid the thing of glitches and therefore have not released it. They have I guess missed their release date and/or release dates for this first and so far only game. This is basically a software business and they are very risky, seldom dependent on the release of one product which is basically where 38 Studio is as a company. Development costs are huge as they are for any software enterprise. No surprise that they have burned through a good deal of money. I think it was $75M in loan guarantees that lured Schill's company to RI. The state had allotted $125M in loan guarantees in order to generate new jobs. If there was a mistake made I would think it might have been in allotting such a large percentage of the total the state had committed to the entire program to one highly risky venture. You could have floated a number of fledgling businesses on $75M in loan guarantees and likely would have had just as much chance of generating the same if not more jobs. I really wonder how successful Schill would have been in generating that much in venture capital for a video gaming business as I would think the private sector would be pretty skeptical. It just so happens that Schill is a video game fanatic but a celebrity baseball player that happens to be a video fanatic does not sound like a sound platform for a start up business in a cut throat highly risky environment. It sounds like a big so what. If they can get the damned thing released it will likely sell some number of copies just on curiosity alone. Hopefully that would yield enough revenue to take a next step cause I would find it hard to believe that it would generate enough enthusiasm to float the business. That is in part the problem. They would have to have a winner in their very first offering and then in all likelihood have to follow that with another winner pretty quickly. The lesson for Schill in all likelihood is that super star software developers are no guarantee that there will not be time and money consuming bumps in the development road. He may also be learning why some of the "features" that he is trying to incorporate into his game are features not found in the existing sword and sorcery and what not games.
  3. I did wonder about this 38 studios venture. Seemed to me that the world needed another video game company like it needed a hole in the head. From what I understand regardless of this "all star" team Schill brags about having created at 38 Studios, they just can't get the bugs worked out of the first game so they can release it. The software business (which is really at the heart of it what his business is) is very risky. Usually it is one of those lose money on some releases and make it all back on one big monster winner kind of business. Schill's company has all of its eggs in this one basket which is totally weird for that kind of business enterprise.
  4. Ya know we will see Paps....wouldn't be just to bad to stomp the s*** outta' him
  5. Geez I never thought I would do this...I knew a guy once that was so torqued about umps that he used to know which crews were coming in for a series. I sure hope these clowns don't catch to many of our games.
  6. Ya NESN is f***ed for me also....great win for the Sox....this might be a good time to catch the phillies...I hope so...think Paps will be jacked....he is going to want to come into the 2nd inning to close!!!
  7. Geez Salty do you have to stab at the thing...I thought he was going to cost Ace that strike Way to go Ace
  8. Big out...big out
  9. "Oh you Rays....you go get um you Rays"...I don't know...sounds kinda' f***ed up to me.
  10. I would like about 5 insurance runs right here
  11. C'mon Ace K this jerk
  12. Aha...yup....used up your guys that can through heat did ya V
  13. Geez I hate ML parks with the relievers warming up that close to the action. Here they are not even that far down the line. Looks like guys would have to go through a picket line to make a play
  14. Wow...think V really wants this win? Here comes Ace in the 8th...I think this is the first time he has brought Ace in the 8th Although Ace really is not a lights out get an out pitcher....but what does V have out there at this point?
  15. I can't find a silver lining in such a stupid plate appearance. Gonzo ain't exactly slammin the ball all over the park and that was the very first pitch he had seen from that pitcher tonight....would have taken that much effort to just get a look at the guys arm angle..... anything.....that is just f***ing arrogant and AGons does not have much to be arrogant about lately.
  16. and Mr first pitch strikes again
  17. My problem with it is that V ends up pullin' guys that are doing OK only to eventually run into one that gets reamed and then V has to pull his horns in cause he has already used so many guys and everybody he would like to pitch is sitting on the bench next to him. The guy who comes in and gets reamed ends up taking a real beating. Three pitchers to get the Rays outta' one inning seems a little excessive to me. The Rays are not a good hitting team...that is not their thing.
  18. V is clearly in one of his empty the pen moods tonight...these actually give me fits.
  19. Sox do get a bit whiny about this balls and strikes thing sometimes. At the end of it all I cannot find it to say that the umps are worse for us than anybody else...they are just abysmal for everybody....worse than I have ever seen it honestly.....I had gotten used to their usual level of horse s*** but this year is way beyond...do they have a contract coming up or somethin....I don't get it.
  20. Mike must have used a word that the ump really did not like cause that was as fast a toss I have seen in awhile....either that or the ump has gotten such an ear full from both benches that he just clipped Mike for the satisfaction.
  21. Mikey Mikey it is me that the umps are trying to give a heart attack....we need you....nobody needs me buddy.
  22. My God did Morales puke up a hair ball yesterday or what?
  23. f*** you Scottie....beam your ass outta' here
