  1. Sox must lead MLB in gray haired relief pitchers
  2. You aren't serious are you? The stat nerds are driving the boat now and the stat nerds say K's are fine as long as you hit enough HR's. Now HR's are how you get paid in MLB, home runs and pitching. HR's are how you get to sign endorsement deals. Sure being an MLB player yields a tidy income. But if an everyday player reality wants to get paid, he better be hitting the ball over the fence. I am hoping the new rules brings us back to more of the game I grew up watching.
  3. I would offer that its a different game now and not for the better. Nobody cares about K rate any long. Nobody cares about BA either.
  4. Well their athleticism has been interesting. I don't know how anybody thought the pitching would hold up over a full season. That the bats have gone this silent is a surprise to me. I expected their athleticism to carry them through the ever looming late summer Sox hitting slump. But they are hitting so poorly that they cannot turn their athleticism into an advantage. Don't get me started on the fielding. That has been inexplicably bad. Then Cora throws in an occasional brain fart courtesy of the Sox Front office Nerds and you have a cluster in the making. My early prediction for this team posted in this forum was a record either just above or below 500 and missing the post season. I probably should have bet it.
  5. NESN apparently in the process of grooming new booth teams. I don't know whether to be surprised or not. Makes sense.....however there is not much that NESN does that makes sense.
  6. While that is likely true, the Sox are running on no cylinders at present. Tonight was the the night that it suddenly dawned on that NESN booth team that the Sox are going nowhere this year. Funny, they spend most of the year promoting the entire starting 9 for the all star team and its like a piano falls on their heads when it crashes and burns.
  7. That was O'Neil in Left that booted that ball into another run for the Mets
  8. Geez O'Neil....what was that? Whatever made you think you could field a ball that way. I have finally concluded that O'Neil fits right into this no field baseball team. And while I had hoped that their athleticism would fill in when the ever present inevitable Sox late summer batting swoon appeared, that just has not happened. There are literally no positive aspects to the Sox game at this point.
  9. Duran has played good baseball throughout the season. The rest...fits and starts....mostly fits. Timing is per usual for the vaunted NESN booth crew, criticizing the quality of the opponent as said opponent is about to take the series. Smooth guys.....real smooth.
  10. If I had to bet money, I would bet that the Sox will finish just over 500 but just under what they needed to make the post season.....affording the fanbase maximum pain.
  11. Cora must have deluded himself into thinking he has a good bullpen. Here, I will try to put the reverse jinx on the Tigers. Here we go: "Sox are about to let the lowly Tigers take two of three and win this series.
  12. My my....I see the game thread really does not need my caustic sarcasm. Doing well without me.
  13. I was wondering something else. This Red Sox edition reminds me of the team that punished me through the 50's and 60's. Nasty baseball that was.
  14. The starters are gassed....the pen is about gassed except for Janson (don't much need your closer in games you are losing). I don't see a return to early season glory. We still cannot find the baseball with our gloves, miss the cutoff man too often and generally just boot the ball around.
  15. Check out the Red Sox earned runs and combine them with their unearned runs and tell me how they are ever going to make the post season this way.
  16. Clearly pitching is the most important aspect of baseball. That said, poor defense can really make life miserable for pitchers. 'Every play in baseball starts with the ball in the hands of.........the Pitcher. In addition, IMO the pitching in MLB is hideous this season. Now this is hard to support in stats because what we really have is the contest between pitcher and batter. Who is to say which is performing better in a specific contest between pitcher and hitter. However, in this case I am pointing to the number of pitchers that have no command of all these pitches that I suspect, management is asking them to throw....NO COMMAND with few exceptions around the league. How many pitches have we seen just grooved to hitters. Pitchers this year are in the main wild in the strike zone or just all over the map. I don't know how ML pitching digs out of its current malaise. Starting pitching has been in the main trash and if your starters are trash, what do you expect from your pen?
  17. Well, our pitching was suspect from day 1 and our fielding has been disgusting. Those two elements of the game are at the essence of run prevention. So, what did we expect.
  18. As much as advanced stats have effected hitting....it has made a laughing stock of what is supposed to be ML level pitching. They have command of nothing and have no confidence. Nobody appears to care that they neither exhibit command or confidence. As long as that spin rate is up EVERYBODY IS HAPPY.
  19. Bello is not alone as MLB pitchers for the most part today could not spell the word command and they sure don't feature command.
  20. Not sure I am interested in trades at this point at least those that could involve Sox young talent. But as to adding to this team. THIS TEAM DESERVES IT. The fans don't deserve it. The media does not deserve it. But the team does. If we don't realize that and the trade deadline ends with a whimper, I am not convinced that we should ever forget it. Based on past history I don't think the team would forget it were it not for how many guys on this team don't really know what they are doing and what their expectations should be.
  21. Much much more embarrassing than our dimensions at the RF foul pole.
  22. I think contemporary baseball has a very inflated view of the value of using advanced stats to guide a team....that is unless they plan to allow 45 men in the dugout....half of them pitchers.
  23. The Red Sox have a tremendous opportunity ahead of them the next few years due to their athleticism once they learn how to really use it. the AL looks more and more like the AL I grew up with. Bunch of men old before their time creaking their way through a season.
  24. Not the way it is now. Concentrating on spin rate and forcing them to throw hard from the very beginning of their stints to the end has made pitchers more vulnerable to everything.
  25. Can anybody play this game at a ML level anymore. I have not seen everybody yet. But the only team I have seen look like a ML team is Philadelphia.
