  1. Are you guys really arguing about whether or not you should have been arguing about something a month ago? It's a dead subject.
  2. http://bostondirtdogs.boston.com/aug11/bdd_curmudgeon_mac_0803.jpg
  3. I wouldn't really disagree with any of that. The public has long believed that psychology isn't a science even though it's long been based in the scientific method which is the definition of a science. Does that mean there aren't biases, trends, whacks, etc? No. Once upon a time, homosexuality was listed in the DSM. But there are biases, trends, whacks in any field. If there wasn't a successful surgery for a medical condition, I doubt people would declare that the medical profession was therefor illegitimate. Of course money is a driving factor behind psychology as well, just as it is any profession. As for the successful treatment of the mentally ill, I think the public looks at the severely mentally ill and because they don't act normal consider them unsuccessfully treated. But to a psychologist or the person themselves, successful treatment could simply be a measurable increase in their level of independence, even if that increase doesn't make them "normal" or as functional a member of society as the typical person.
  4. How is it not a science? It's not like a bearded Austrian sits in an office snorting cocaine and declares he noticed a lot of people behave a certain way so it's put in the DSM. Everything in the DSM is scientifically tested.
  5. True, but the perfectionism demosntrated by some "workaholics" could be a symptom of OCD or some other anxiety disorder.
  6. Stupid is as stupid does. It's not like the DSM makes up these behaviors.
  7. Give the witch hunt a rest. You claimed I said legal gambling was the issue. I asked you to quote where I said that and you changed the subject. Now you're claiming I changed my answer 4 times. If that's true, either quote where I contradicted myself or stop flaming. Saying gambling isn't the issue, illegal gambling is the issue is not a contradiction. That's like saying driving isn't an issue, but driving without a license is.
  8. Doesn't look like we have an injury thread so I'll post this in here. Doubront is throwing a side session this week, Ryan Kalish is playing again in A on a rehab assignment and Lowrie has played two games at AAA in a rehab assignment. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/
  9. Workaholic isn't a mental health disorder either.
  10. I knew a Yankees fan would come into this game thread and say something like that. I thought it was be Jackson coming into say that we won't be able to resign him though since he's done that before when Ellsbury has a good game.
  11. "Sex addiction" isn't a recognized mental health diagnosis.
  12. True, I don't know if any of them were banned for betting on poker. Not true that only players who bet on games were suspended. Eugene Paulette was banned for associating with gamblers. Mantle and Mays were banned from baseball (after they had retired) for signing autgraphs at a casino.
  13. Zambrano! ...and probably Peavy.
  14. No. But every ballpark has different "ground rules" of where you're allowed to stand when you make a catch. In some ballparks, you can stand on the grounds crew's tarp to make a catch and in others the ball is out of play once you get on the tarp.
  15. I don't care if he's doing coke, I only care if he gets suspended or not and it would be a 50 game suspension. It's on the banned substance list.
  16. White Sox rallying. Burnett pulled after giving up 7 runs through 4.2. Two men still in scoring position.
  17. What a shot too. He must have hit that 450' to dead center. Erick Bedard's gotta be loving his new team.
  18. ELLSBURY! f*** YES! I haven't loved him this much since the 2007 playoffs.
