  1. This is an excellent article on this topic: http://www.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/content/20130127-red-sox-hoping-their-young-arms-will-eventually-pay-off.ece
  2. The 2000 -2003 Rangers had a young slugger named Alex Rodriguez who averaged 52 homeruns in those three years. Those teams also had Juan Gonzalez, Mark Teixiera, Ivan Rodriguez, and Hank Blaylock. Those teams also averaged more than 90 loses per year. Why? Because the Rangers invested in offense. They traded away pitching prospects like John Danks, Chris Young, and Armmando Galerraga. When did the Rangers turn things around? When they started focusing on pitching.
  3. I agree. The Red Sox need pitching before a big hitting outfielder. Besides, great outfielders don't always get their teams to World Series. Henry Aaron went to only 2 in 23 years. Yastrzemski 2 in 23 Bonds 1 in 22 Griffey Jr. 0 in 22 Ted Williams 1 in 19 That is 6 World Series and only 1 Championship in 109 seasons. Great outfielders don't always win championships.
  4. I won't argue this. Gomes at $10 million over two years is a real head scratcher. He has been with three teams over two years and has never commanded as much as $2 million a year. The Red Sox have had a history of great left fielders.
  5. He has a .732 career OPS as a left handed batter. That is better than Cody Ross's career spilts versus right handed pitchers.
  6. Hmmm...Actually, he just stole a career high 39 bases in 2012. A good poster always checks the facts.
  7. Didn't Nava merely have a cyst removed from his wrist? I know it was painful but don't think that would hamper his production as much as an injury. He was placed on the DL but did finish the season before surgery was performed.
  8. I assume you will be banned soon, but you actually did make up the years and dollar figures. They may represent a comp with Holliday, but you did make up the numbers. The Sox have Bradley and Brentz coming up. They have Victorino signed for three years. They realize that long term contracts can tie up payroll in a bad way when injuries and ineffectiveness happen.
  9. Whoa! That is extreme. I wonder about the trades the D-backs have made this winter. Chris Young, Trevor Bauer, and now Justin Upton for a slew of middle infielders, Prado, and prospects. We know Bauer and Upton were seen as difficult to coach. Maybe Kirk Gibson just wanted to improve the clubhouse environment.
  10. It is time to add someone like Kolbrin Vitek to Iglesias to persuade the Pirates to save some bucks. I believe one of their top prospects is a left handed hitting first baseman, but he is probably a year away.
  11. He has never played first as a professional. I would rather they try for someone with a lot more power.
  12. Pavano was throwing in the 85 to 86 mph range last year. I don't see the need for the guy.
  13. I don't know. He is such an injury risk. He is now down for 6 to 8 weeks with a ruptured spleen. If the Twins are not interested, the Sox should not be.
  14. Scott Williamson's and bidding starts at $1 and not the $1,000,000 I originally posted. There is a big difference. http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20111014&content_id=25658000&vkey=news_bos&c_id=bos [edited]
  15. I figured you knew but thought I should clarify his contract situation for those in doubt of his value.
  16. I believe he is under control through 2015.
  17. Jones will earn $4,500,000 next season. Rumors indicate the Pirates might be willing to unload his salary. He rakes versus right-handed pitching but suffers against lefties. He plays first and the corner outfield positions. He would be a nice addition.
  18. Some of us have advocated Garrett Jones from the Pirates. He is a left hander who has strong splits versus right-handed pitching. He can play both first and the outfield. He also is getting expensive for Pittsburgh.
  19. I believe it is so they can renegotiate or demand monetary compensation.
  20. With Napoli's hip, Gomes' splits versus right handed pitching, and Kalish's recent health issues, I'd say Garrett Jones would be the perfect final piece to the offense. He has spent his career bounced back and forth between the outfield and first base. I can see him getting 380 to 420 at bats. The number of games at first would depend on Napoli's hip, and if he takes the primary platoon in left. I'm betting the Sox will give Napoli plenty of off days, especially on the road.
  21. Maybe Napoli doesn't need a platoon partner as much as he needs a left handed caddy. I know he is no longer expected to catch, but he has played more than 114 games only once. And more importantly, he has a bad hip.
  22. I would like to see the Sox get a left-handed platoon complement for Napoli. Garrett Jones would have been nice.
  23. I loved Earl Weaver. He was a classic. A little, feisty classic.
  24. I would stay away from Jurrjens. His velocity has been dropping consistently through the last few years and was averaging only 88.6 mph last year. He just isn't the same pitcher he once was.
  25. Yaz taught me to appreciate a left-handed pull-hitter batting third. He would move the runner from first to third more easily. With this line-up, I just think Pedroia makes the most sense in the third hole. If Ellsbury's power returns, I can see him hitting third. I don't know if batting Ellsbury and Ortiz back to back is a great idea, though.
