  1. Yup. Hopefully the Sox FO (and some of the posters here, including myself) learned a lesson when trying to get through a season without a dependable closer.
  2. That. Was Weird.
  3. I would trade Drake Britton to the Angels before FA hits so they can exercise Haren's option and the Sox can get him on a 1 year deal. They're not going to get anything for him anyway, and it's likely that they wouldn't give him a qualifying offer because he'd be likely to accept (13.3mm is still a raise from Haren's $12.75mm salary last year). That's probably as big of an AAV as he'd get and he'd stay with a place he's comfortable. So, the Angels can exercise his option and grab a decent prospect in Britton. That's the first move I make if I'm Cherrington. Get Haren before he hits FA.
  4. Uhhh ohhhh.... Jake Peavy was extended by the ChiSox for 2 years/$29mm. Pal is officially on suicide watch.
  5. That doesn't make Drew suddenly an MVP caliber player, not by any means first off, and I don't see the connection with Stephen Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury. Drew = SS. Ellsbury = CF.
  6. What is this even referring to? wut?
  7. your thoughts need serious organizing.
  8. Stephen Drew's option was declined today. Seems like a perfect fit for the Sox on a 1 year pillow contract. If all goes well, Bogaerts could be starting SS in 2014. I'd be very surprised if Drew didn't go to the Sox this offseason. He could well be a .285/.345/.460 hitter at Fenway and in the AL East He also makes Iglesias expendable this offseason. Obviously he's not going to be the centerpiece in a deal, but he could well be a very good complimentary piece.
  9. I really think the Sox need to stay away from guys like Peavy with inconsistent production. He's a pretty big gamble, especially for a guy who is going to be seeking $18-20mm AAV. Seems like we just got lucky to give up some guys who drained our resources with inconsistent and/or poor production, so why are we wanting to dive back into a deal with a guy who has had 1 good year and 2 horrid years in the past 3 years? I would much rather see the Sox have some patience and spend their money on guys that have shown a consistent ability to produce at a high level. If we're going to take a flier on a guy who has had mixed results over the past couple years, at least go with a guy who has had more good than bad (i.e. Tim Lincecum, Josh Johnson, Dan Haren, etc). I know that some of those guys cost prospects, but at the same time, you're getting a good bit more assurance for the cost.
  10. Cots has Atchison arb eligible in 2015 for the first time. Tazawa, however, is arb eligible this year. Wonder if they got them mixed up? Either way, that's $29mm in arbitration expenses, which is about what most of us expected (I had it estimated at $30mm I think). That puts the Sox at 74.6mm in payroll. Tack on $12.5mm for Ortiz and $7mm for Ross, and the Sox are at $94.1mm going into FA. That also has a roster as follows: SP: Lester, Buchholz, Lackey, Doubront, SLOT RP: Bard, Bailey, Miller, Breslow, Atchison, Aceves, Tazawa C: Lavarnway 1B: SLOT 2B: Pedroia SS: Iglesias 3B: Middlebrooks LF: Kalish CF: Ellsbury RF: Ross DH: Ortiz Bench: Salty, Ciriaco, Sweeney, Sands So essentially, they have $94mm locked up and 2 slots that have to be filled. They certainly have to upgrade at a whole lot more than just 1 SP and 1B to be competitive next year, but that's the picture that I see as of 10/29.
  11. Happy Offseason Day everyone!!! Finally, this season can be officially put to rest. As if we weren't pondering enough moves already, now we can really rip this offseason open and start making ridiculous trade proposals and out of the box FA moves. The Sox have a lot of work to do over the next 2-3 months. Lets see what Cherrington is all about.
  12. I'm very hesitant on acquiring Anibal Sanchez. He has a good career ERA, but he's pitched almost exclusively in the NL. I'm always hesitant to acquire a guy who has only had mediocre success in the NL. I see Sanchez as another Lackey (2010 Lackey, not 2011). A guy who will throw around 200 IP to a 4.2-4.5 ERA in the AL East.
  13. Sox would never, ever get both Lincecum and Ike Davis for Salty, Ells, and Doubie. The Sox couldn't get Ike alone for that deal.
  14. Yeah that's what I'm guessing too. Too much for my taste.
  15. You could have just shown his splits. 2012: Home: .834 OPS, 11 HR (76 games) Away: .841 OPS, 13 HR (72 games) 2011: Home: .853 OPS, 12 HR (75 games) Away: .792 OPS, 11 HR (75 games) 2010: Home: .854 OPS, 15 HR (75 games) Away: .885 OPS, 14 HR (75 games) Total: Home: .848 OPS, 38 HR (226 Games) Away: .841 OPS, 38 HR (222 Games) By no means am I advocating signing him to anything that would cost more than $12-13mm AAV, I'm simply just showing he's not a product of Yankee Stadium.
  16. I wouldn't doubt that at all. But 5/75mm is a far cry from Werth's $130mm.
  17. wut? Swisher won't sniff 9 digits. He'll be lucky if he gets $80mm.
  18. Che-Hsuan Lin was claimed by the Astros. Dojji is officially on suicide watch.
  19. Let me just put it this way. There are a lot of very intriguing, young first basemen out there that I would be interested in. Michael Morse (though he is 30), Mark Trumbo, Brandon Belt, Justin Smoak. I would be interested in all of those, obviously depending on the price. If you can buy low on Smoak, I'd take him off the Mariners hands in an instant and see if he could be a nice change of scenery guy.
  20. IMO, he's a guy who is still learning plate discipline, and will improve on his BB numbers going forward. He's just an idea, and I very well may be wrong on him, but giving up 1 year of Ells and Cecchini for 4 years of 30+ HR first baseman wouldn't be a bad trade.
  21. The fact is that the Sox will have to offer him $13.3mm as a qualifying offer anyway to receive a draft pick if he leaves. He would likely take a $13.3mm deal for 1 year if he had to, but if he's going to take that, then why the hell wouldn't the Sox just tack on another year and get him for $8-9mm next year?
  22. Yes. Trading 1 year of Ellsbury plus Garin Cecchini for a perennial 35+ HR guy at Fenway who is young and under club control until 2017 would be awful.
  23. Bailey has been an all star twice. Even with his down year this past year, he's got a career 2.47 ERA. In his good, healthy seasons, he's going to give you a low to mid 2's ERA with 35+ saves. Aviles's ceiling is a bench player. If you're going by who is going to give you more value going forward, it's Bailey, and it's not close IMO.
  24. I should also mention that Kalish said he is really excited about Farrell being the new manager. He also said he moved to Boston because he felt like he should be here since he's finally healthy for the first time in two years. Here's to hoping the Sox give him a starting job and he takes advantage of his opportunity.
