  1. It's more about Trevor Bauer than it is about Justin Upton. Bauer is a 21 year old, top 10 prospect in all of baseball. The availability of these do not come around often. He's in line to be an absolute stud, and a guy who is going to be under club control for years. He is exactly what the Red Sox need. Acquiring both in 1 deal is a perfect fit for the Sox.
  2. He's got 3 years left on his deal. He's too far away to require an extension. And if he does, you could do worse than giving a 7-8 year deal (4-5 year extension) to a 25 year old.
  3. If you want a high profile OF and a young stud SP, you have to give something up to get them. The DBacks aren't just going to take a bunch of s*** players. Having said that, they may be ok with not having Bradley because they already have a set OF essentially. So maybe Bogaerts + De La Rosa + Doubront + Cecchini + Breslow/Miller?
  4. Yeah, but I'm sure he'd waive his NTC since he is constantly on the block with them.
  5. Bauer is a 21 year old who is going to going to be a future ace. If the Sox were somehow able to retain De La Rosa and get Bauer and Upton, their future rotation would be absolutely disgusting.
  6. You don't need an Ellsbury replacement if you have Upton.
  7. Now hearing the DBacks will listen on Trevor Bauer too. Bradley + Bogaerts + Doubront + De La Rosa for Bauer + J-Up?
  8. I wonder if Jason Bay could get his career back on track if the Sox picked him up. I honestly think a change of scenery would help him out a ton. If the Sox gave him a 1 year/$3mm deal, I bet he'd take it to try to propel his value again. How about an OF of Bay - Ells - Upton, and can you imagine if Bay bounced back and gave us a 25 HR season, Ells had a normal year (.295/.350/.450, 13-15 HR), and Upton had a solid year? That OF could be stupid good.
  9. I almost edited and took his name out. I don't think we'd give him up. I bet we can pull a deal with them, though, in a 3 way trade.
  10. Justin Upton is officially available, and the DBacks are "actively" shopping him. Perfect guy for the Red Sox. Durable, well above average defense (typically UZR of 6 to 7), good power, good speed, very solid OBP (.350+). DBacks looking for 2 of the following: LH Reliever (Breslow/Miller/Hill), Proven SP (Lester? Could be 3-way deal to get this to DBacks), and upgrade at 3B (Not WMB obviously, but potentially Cecchini for the future). Should be interesting. The Sox almost have to come down with him, though.
  11. Yes. And how did the Orioles do so well this year? Could it have been because of an incredible bullpen?? You need to read rather than just assuming you know everything. http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120830&content_id=37602820&vkey=perspectives&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb Or, do you just know more than scouts do? And as for your "Oh he's 25 and in AA", here's this (in the same article) He wasn't pumping 97 until he got to the Red Sox. That's likely what slowed his progression. Picking up 5-8 mph in velocity is kind of a big deal. I don't care if you disagree with me. I do care if you just make posts out of ignorance and don't do any research on a topic. I'd rather you have no opinion than an ignorant opinion.
  12. Just because he was 25 doesn't mean he couldn't be a contributor to the Sox pen this year. Especially since he gained 5 mph of velocity since being signed with the Sox and is 6'7, which means he's basically on top of the hitters when he's pitching. He has posted a K/9 of over 13.5 and a BB/9 of under 2.8. His whip since being with the Sox has been sub 0.90. To say you're not sweating it just because he's 25 is purely ignorant.
  13. Pumping 97 now. Sitting 97.
  14. Red Sox fail to add Michael Olmstead to the 40 man roster and lose him to FA. All he did was post a 14.0 K/9 and a 2.3 BB/9 this year with a 1.52 ERA between Salem and Portland (59.1 IP), throwing 97 mph as the closer. In AA, he threw 20 IP over 14 appearances and didn't allow a single earned run. He's 25, which is old, but it's because he was throwing 89-92 the past few years until he hooked up with the Red Sox in 2011. Since then, he posted a 1.39 ERA in 2011, and a 1.52 last year. But no, we don't need him on the 40 man roster. Not with studs like Sandy Rosario, Ivan DeJesus, Danny Valencia, and Daniel Nava. Nah. We'll just go find a 6'7, 250 lb flamethrower somewhere else. Front office mistake #2 of this offseason.
  15. You gotta think that the Guardians are going to be cleaning house a bit this year. I hope Cherrington calls and checks in on Justin Masterson. I know Masterson had a bad year last year, but I'd at least like to check in on him and see how much it would take to get him. Masterson had a 3.21 ERA in 2011 (3.28 FIP, so it was a legit ERA). He may be just a quick tweak or two away from being a mid 3's ERA guy who throws 215+ IP each year.
  16. Not really, the Angels were taking on $9.8mm in Marmol's salary, and then they were throwing the Cubs $3mm to essentially even out the money on the deals. It's not speculation that if they received a guy making $1-2mm that they would throw less money. In fact, they would likely throw more money. I agree that it was very strange on the Cubs part to pull back. I had certainly not heard any indications that Marmol would waive his NTC, either. And if you're looking at red flags, you can't overlook at the fact that the Angels were essentially ok with paying Marmol $12.5mm but not ok with paying Haren $15.5mm. That seems like the bigger red flag in all of this. By the way, when you say 'the "horrible" Marmol', it makes it seem as though you think he's not horrible, but I know you're much smarter than that, so I'm not sure what the point of that was.
  17. And it's his fault for going nuts because the team didn't want him closing anymore and he threw a hissy fit. I don't want those kinds of players on the team. I can understand getting mad because you're competitive, but the way he reacted was ridiculous. I'm not forgetting what he did. I'm saying I'd rather have Haren than Aceves.
  18. The reason that we know the Angels weren't asking for too much was because they had a deal lined up with the Cubs for Carlos Marmol. He's horrendous. He had a 7.3 BB/9 last year. Haren could have been had for Chris Carpenter. He certainly could have been had for Alfredo Aceves, and I would have been more than willing to get rid of that clown. Regardless of all of this, it is very curious as to why the Cubs pulled out of the deal. Was it because of Marmol's no trade? Was it because the Cubs found something on his medicals? Who knows, all we know is that he threw well down the stretch: 3.58 ERA in his final 13 starts, 2.81 ERA in his final 8 starts. So that makes me think that he is healthy enough. The Sox could have gotten the Angels to pay at least $2mm of his $15.5mm deal. It really just makes no sense to me.
  19. Hunter will almost certainly get 2+ years on his deal.
  20. meh. not sold on Bourn. He's looking for a $100mm+ contract, and he's only had an OBP over .350 once in his career. Career .339 OBP, .702 OPS. I'm just not that sold on him.
  21. The whole point trading for Haren is so that you don't have to battle in FA when other teams are offering him 2-3 year deals. You only want him for 1 year. Not sure why this team can't compete for a WS next year. They can easily compete with a couple moves. The biggest thing is that I have faith that Farrell can get Lester and Buchholz straightened out. Certainly there's a good bit of work to be done on this team, this team needs 2 starters and some high OBP guys. Haren would have helped that, but he comes with risks. The problem is that the market is incredibly thin. So thin that I'm actually warming up to the idea of getting Grienke. You have to wonder if the Twins would trade Mauer + $30mm (taking his AAV down to $18mm over 5 years, so 5/90, which is very reasonable). I would love to have a .420 OBP hitting 3rd in our lineup myself.
  22. I have thought about it for a bit, and I think I would call the Twins on Mauer, and see what they want and how much they'd eat. Looking at his numbers, he's got a .399 OBP over the last 3 years and a .416 OBP in 2012. His power numbers got crushed by Target field and while he'll never be a 28 HR guy again, he can certainly be a 18-20 HR guy with his opposite field swing. Add that to a .400+ OBP and his versatility, and he's exactly the type of player that the Sox are looking for. If the Twins will eat his salary down to around a $17mm AAV, I'd check into him certainly.
  23. Dan Haren is now officially a FA. I'm shocked the Angels didn't pull the trigger on him. I guess teams don't think he's worth $15.5mm, which now makes you wonder what he'll get on the open market. It's going to be very interesting.
  24. Free Agency has officially started. Wonder if the Angels exercised Haren's option and traded him, exercised and kept to work out a deal later, or let him walk?
  25. Cubs pulled out from deal. Marmol had no trade, must not have been able to waive by midnight Swoop, Cherrington, swoop!!!
