  1. My point is that he is an MLB caliber player right now who can have a direct impact on this team making the post season this year. With Ortiz being out in April, he could well be a guy who helps this team succeed by getting on base at a high clip and playing elite defense, which is what the Sox will need to provide offense with the big bopper out. And, for what it's worth, my suggestion is that Bradley plays 120-140 games in the MLB. Meaning 4-5 games/week spelling all 3 OF, but more often Gomes than any of them, specifically vs RHP. Getting off to a good start and exploiting the injuries of the Yankees in April could prove to be invaluable in September when we're battling for a PS slot. Bradley would certainly help that cause tremendously.
  2. He makes a very good point, though. If the Angels had it to do over again, they would bring up Trout on Opening day 10 times out of 10. If its the difference between a PS berth and missing the playoffs, you bring him up, and you do it now. And with the AL East as tightly wound as it is, I would agree with Tomase that you bring him up now. You worry about 2019 when it rolls around. What happens when you take the road like Pedroia, Lester, or Buchholz, and you buy out his arbitration years and extend him? Then his super two status and years of control go out the window outside of a very slight amount of leverage, which the Sox will quickly combat with guaranteed years and dollars. Not to mention that Bradley is engaged. Buchholz didn't sign an extension until he got married and realized that he wanted stability in his finances for he, his wife, and his children. There's a good chance that Bradley could be in that same boat.
  3. The Tigers have released Brennan Boesch. That's an extremely intriguing player that the Sox could/should look into for a LH bat in LF. He's got a solid opposite field swing that could play well at Fenway.
  4. Yeah that lineup that Abe posted seems dumb, having Gomes hit 4. I'd much rather see Ells-Vic-Pedey-Nap-WMB-Drew-Gomes-Salty/Ross-Carp.
  5. Well, the Sox SP have their velocity.
  6. *Warning: The following post is both optimistic and contains references to spring training stats. Read at your own risk* The entire SP has looked really good this year. Buch has yet to allow a run (8.2 IP), Lester has a 1.29 ERA in 14 IP, Dempster has a 2.08 ERA 8.2 IP, Doubront has a 3.86 ERA, and Lackey, though he has an ERA of like 8 (6.2 IP) has shown good command, especially to his glove side of the plate, which he wasn't able to do in 2011. I'm certainly encouraged by the outings the SP have had this year. How that translates into the season, who knows. I know you can't take very much from any ST start, but at the same time, at least the starters are having effective starts that they can build on and be encouraged by rather than getting pummeled.
  7. I certainly agree that Rubby would be an effective closer. I just think it's an absolute last resort. They'll exhaust every avenue to get him to start. In other news, Allen Webster just continues to absolutely dominate. 11 IP, 14 K's, 1 BB, 2 ER. Just ridiculous stuff. Scouts raving about his change. Exciting kid to follow.
  8. Not at all. He's clearly not ready. He is throwing 2 inning stints all ST. It's been known well, well before his bad outings that he is not an option for the rotation starting out. I'm not blaming him at all, just noticing a coincidence. Saying he could have heard that and tried to start overthrowing is a very reasonable explanation for his loss of control.
  9. I mentioned it twice. And the first time, I specifically said "Not that this is the reason..." I mean, putting words into someones mouth is one thing. Putting them into someones mouth who blatantly said "This is not what I'm saying" is a whole different level.
  10. Well, this is very encouraging news. I posted this in the Ortiz MRI thread, but I'll post it here too because its worth repeating - We'll be facing quite a few LHP in our first few games. Yankees series, we get Pettitte and CC Jays series, we'll get Buehrle and Romero Orioles series, we'll get Chen and Gonzalez Rays series, we'll get Price and Moore That essentially gets us to April 16th. That also gives Ortiz a full month after his 5-7 days of rest to get his at bats in to get ready. I would think, barring any more setbacks, that he should be back by mid-April. If that's the case, we should be just fine without him for those first 13 games, as 8 of them will be vs LHP. With the likes of Gomes, Napoli, Pedroia, Victorino, Middlebrooks, and Ross, this team should crush LHP.
  11. No I'm not. Correlation does not equal causation.
  12. Carp can play OF as well, so his versatility is pretty valuable. Plus, he had an OPS+ of 125 in 2011, when he was playing in Seattle. Hit 12 HR in 79 games, which is actually very good power, especially playing 1/2 of your games at SafeCo. And he hit 5 of his 12 HR at SafeCo, so it's not like he was launching them in Texas and sucking wind in Seattle. I would probably go with Carp over Gomez. Carp has surprising pop and versatility to play 1B/LF, and enough of a stick to DH if needed (though I think we'd see Napoli DH, Carp at 1B if that were the case).
  13. As bad as De La Rosa has been his last two outings, that's how good Webster has been. And maybe that's for the best, because Webster won't be on the same innings limits that De La Rosa is on, so they can really cut Webster loose. If we watched De La Rosa dominate every outing, it would be very tempting for the FO to try to squeeze him into a spot on this team. Right now, the way Webster has thrown, and his lack of a leash on innings, at least relatively speaking, I'm very excited to see how he does today and the rest of spring. I really hope that he is the first guy called up for a spot start, so long as Morales is on the shelf. His line this far has been 8 IP, 2 ER, 1 BB, 11 K's, sitting 94-97, touching 99. Very exciting. Certainly a guy, like DLR, that I look forward to watching throw everytime he goes out there
  14. And De La Rosa was brilliant until Farrell started talking about him starting in Portland, or at best, Pawtucket. Then he started sucking. Probably started trying to do too much, overthrowing, etc.
  15. I find it very, very, very interesting that Rubby was throwing well until Farrell came out and told the media "He's going to start in the minors. He's either going to start in Portland or Pawtucket". After Farrell made those comments, De La Rosa plunged. Not saying it's what caused his plunge, I'm just saying that it's an interesting order of events. After having success at the MLB level in 2011, having to take the entire year off in 2012, and hearing that you're going to be demoted potentially to AA in 2013 has got to be pretty frustrating for a guy who likely was anticipating an early-to-mid season call up for at least a few spot starts.
  16. Well, if we're going to lose Ortiz, better to lose him now when we're playing the Yanks sans Granderson and Tex for 3 games to start out. Not only that, but we'll be facing quite a few LHP in our first few games. Yankees series, we get Pettitte and CC Jays series, we'll get Buehrle and Romero Orioles series, we'll get Chen and Gonzalez Rays series, we'll get Price and Moore That takes us through 4/15. So in those 13 games, we'll catch 8 LHP. This team is going to annihilate LHP, with Gomes, Victorino, Napoli, Pedroia, Middlebrooks, etc, so I think they'll be able to have success without Ortiz for the first 1/2 of April. Hopefully he is back by then and we can have a full lineup.
  17. They also went from 57 to 72 to 79 wins over the past 3 seasons. A 3 game bump is pretty reasonable
  18. So, now because of a couple bad outings, De La Rosa is a no talent bum that was overrated? That's not very fair at all. Can I remind some of you that Papelbon allowed 7 ER over 8 H in his first 1.2 IP this year? Cole Hamels got obliterated by the Dominican team, 12 H, 8 ER in 2.2 IP. Steven Strasburg, Clayton Kershaw, and Matt Cain all have ERA's over 5 in ST. I understand pessimism is in some of the posters nature, but downplaying our prospects just to downplay our prospects is just silly.
  19. Followed by an RBI Double in his 3rd PA. That would be 2-2 with a HR, an RBI Double, and a BB. He's now hitting .520. Say what you want about the competition, I don't care. What's the expectation for a good hitter against a bad pitcher? Domination. And that's exactly what Bradley is doing. Point blank, this kid needs to be the LH bat in LF, especially while Ortiz is down and out. And it's not close.
  20. Pitching: LHP Jon Lester followed by RHP Rubby De La Rosa, RHP Alex Wilson, RHP Anthony Carter, RHP Chris Carpenter. Extra Bases (on Boston.com, done by Nick Cafardo and Pete Abraham) does a daily update on all things Red Sox, including games and scheduled appearances. 21. Exactly. "If I'm right about the team sucking, I can gloat about that. If I'm wrong about the team sucking, I can gloat about the team being a good team".
  22. Yup. And in his 3 games as a RP, he allowed a total of 3 hits. Only 1 of which was a XBH. .458 OPS Against as a Relief Pitcher in 2011. But he got hit hard. :dunno:
  23. Yes it's 5-7 days. Pete Abe estimated in an article that he would/could miss several weeks of the season. This article coming right after another article that concludes that Ortiz and the Sox dodged a bullet by it just being inflammation and nothing more serious. As if the reports themselves aren't conflicting enough, Pete decided he needed to contradict himself in back to back articles, which is awesome.
  24. We should just rename this entire website to Murphy's Law Red Sox. Because according to most people, the FO are idiots, the manager is a baffoon, Ortiz is never going to come back. I literally have to be optimistic about every single player we have because the pessimism on this board is hideous and I try to balance it out. At some point, though, reading through the same exact s*** over and over and over again about any and every player or any member of the FO becomes incredibly tired and miserable. Our FO sucks, our manager sucks, our team sucks, and our prospects will all fizzle out. Well then why in the hell do some of you even watch these games and watch this team?!?
  25. Ortiz has said multiple times that his actual Achilles tendon is completely healed. The soreness associated with it is to be expected. http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/25276/ortiz-doc-said-heel-soreness-to-be-expected It looks like the risk of actually tearing his Achilles again is consistent with that of anyone else on the team, if his Achilles is completely repaired. I think it's just a matter of breaking down the calcification, which, per wikipedia, "Calcification is the process in which calcium salts build up in soft tissue, causing it to harden.". From what I understand, the more he runs, the more it breaks it down. It's just a process of pain management that occurs while he breaks down the calcification. That's my very limited, very unprofessional understanding of the situation. Whether he makes it for Opening Day or not, who knows. But even if he doesn't make it for OD, I think an early-April return (perhaps 4/7 - 4/10) is extremely reasonable.
