  1. Sore hand, not the one he had surgery one. Just picked up Salty in my fantasy league, I had Mauer and Hank Conger. I always had high hopes for him, but I wasn't sure if he'd pan out. I could see him being a .250, 20 HR, decent OBP guy (although I doubt he'd ever exceed those numbers by much).
  2. I do not. However, Matsui was said to bring in about $21 million in revenue per year to the Yankees (this was, however, from Scott Boras, so take that number as you will). I remember reading something similar about Ichiro's marketing power, and I would assume that Daisuke would have provided a decent amount of marketing money for at least the first two years of his contract. Edit: Found the article about revenue from Matsui/Ichiro, http://readingrunningredsox.blogspot.com/2011/05/what-can-you-buy-for-103-million.html
  3. The marketing and the revenue the Red Sox got from Japan made this deal definitely worth the $103 million, whatever Daisuke's performances were. He was a decent back-of-the-rotation starter, and $10 million per year is not that far off market value for those types of pitchers. I'd like to see the Sox try out Doubront in that role for a couple games before making a decision on a deadline pitcher.
  4. So, I just happened to tune in to MLB.com's look in right as Buck hits that home run...and the Guardians' announcer says "And that slices the lead in half! It's 4-2!" And I was sort of like...really?
  5. I wouldn't trust any numbers from the PCL. Top 25 might be a bit of a stretch, he's a good prospect but I don't think he's that good.
  6. Random thoughts - 1. After you get to the playoffs, winning the WS involves a lot of luck. 2. I think there's a limit to run prevention - the resources that you have to commit in order to prevent a run starts to rise as you prevent fewer runs. Eventually, you start to reach a place where more of the runs become unpreventable. So, practically speaking, defense is still important, but you shouldn't use it as the only way to construct teams (see 2010 Mariners). I don't think it's an issue of scarcity so much as it is an issue of diminishing returns. Similarly, there's probably an upper limit to the runs that you score. 3. Iglesias is nowhere near Lowrie yet (and may not be in the future) - his only offensive value comes from his ability to make contact, he doesn't have good plate discipline or power. There probably will be a time when Iglesias is more cost-efficient (and those more valuable in a per-dollar sense), but I feel like Iglesias won't ever reach Lowrie's level in terms of total value.
  7. Also Lackey's been having personal problems - his wife was recently diagnosed with cancer. I don't think his mind's entirely on baseball right now.
  8. I could see the Twins moving one of their pitchers, they have good depth and their season is looking as done as a season can be in the first 40 games. And the Yankees do need another pitcher, Hughes and Nova have been underwhelming, Burnett is a question mark and Garcia and Colon are breaking out or overperforming, depending on who you ask.
  9. I don't think there's really much "chemistry" in baseball. In sports like basketball, soccer, and hockey, improving your own statistics can hurt the team. In baseball, there is virtually no way to improve how you personally perform and hurt your team.
  10. I think you should post whichever stats you would find relevant, and then convince people that those stats are important.
  11. If Albers has options, I don't see him going to the roster. It seems like the Sox basically threw everyone with options into AAA to start the season, and threw everyone that didn't at the wall to see if anything stuck.
  12. 12:30 Wednesday classes, sup. :harhar:
  13. I don't think Iglesias will be coming up next year. Unless he can show that he can get on-base at a good clip (and Lowrie stops hitting), I think that Lowrie is actually the better player. Iglesias is a much better fielder, but it's not like Lowrie is the shortstop version of Edwin Encarnacion. I think that unless Iglesias shows marked improvement within 3 years (or whenever Lowrie's arbitration years finish) or Lowrie is constantly injured/not hitting, Iglesias won't be sticking with the team.
  14. Well, a silent auction would fix the problem. And I'd be willing to do it sometime, my only concern is that it's a little unfair to people that had already been getting high-salary players and not anticipating this kind of situation.
  15. What if we set a time, like midseason or so, where people can enter a silent bid for players using money available? It might be unfair to spring this now, but I like the idea (maybe we could do this in the future)?
  16. Ichiro Suzuki, Hideki Matsui, Takashi Saito, Hiroki Kuroda, Koji Uehara, Hideo Nomo
  17. Not every pitcher has their sharpest stuff at the start of the season. If Dice-K pounds the zone, he needs good movement (which he had at times last year). I'm sure that eventually he'll be a 4.5 ERA guy at the end of teh season. If he keeps sucking over the next 5 starts, then there might be a problem.
  18. I'd like to give Salty some time with the bat, but I"m a little concerned with how he's handled the pitching staff. It's possible that the early season struggles could be due to how he's handled them, and Varitek caught Beckett's terrific game against the Yankees. I feel like that's just coincidence, but part of me isn't too sure. A new catcher probably wouldn't solve this issue, though (unless we happened to get one of the Molinas, and only Yadier really does stuff with the bat out of them). Lowrie should be playing shortstop because he is the best shortstop the Sox have. I like Scutaro a lot, but Lowrie's just a better player IMO.
  19. What are the rules for adding/dropping players? Can we add whenever, or does it have to because of an injury?
  20. Lol, I tried to refresh the page and the server told me it was having capacity problems.
  21. I can't help but wonder if Perez would rather face Drew, and pitch around Ortiz.
