  1. Well, I do see the potential for the future. They're dropping a lot of deadweight contracts--35 million that has no real value-- at the end of the season, they're not losing any major players until the end of the 2012 season. And while the next wave of prospects thins out after Kalish, but between Lowrie, Bowden, Lars, Doubront... someone is going to turn out to be an effective long term option. But that doesn't mean they should have just given up on this season.
  2. 3 per team means more than just closers and setup men. I'm talking 7th inning guys, and that's exactly what this team needed. And no, it didn't matter if that was a LHP, any of those 88 guys would have been an upgrade. They could have made any number of trades to upgrade the team at OF, IF, bullpen, catcher for short term. Cash had 0 rbis and 1 run his entire 20 game stay here. Salty hit that production in his first full game, and they got him for just about nothing. I think that says a lot about their approach to the trade deadline.
  3. While I agree that there weren't a ton of options... I do think there was more the FO could have done. This team has had so many holes, and its tried to fill them all from within, but were Kevin Cash/Eric Patterson the absolute best options at C/2B? Even if it was for just short term, there is a lot of garbage out there that smells a little nicer, and wouldn't have cost very much at all. Kevin Cash simply should not have played 20 games here, period. How long did it take before they realized Okajima was ineffective? I don't think its too much to ask for to get relief pitchers with a 4.00 ERA. There are 88 relief pitchers in the majors with an ERA under 4.00, and they couldn't get one of them for a fair price?
  4. I know it was before my time, but weren't there big issues around here when people talked politics?
  5. Well, its tough that Kansas City put up such a good fight and couldnt do it in the end.
  6. f*** this game. I don't want to watch the rest of this, catch you guys later.
  7. I'm pissed. Papelbon wants Rivera money, but pitches like Boof Bonser.
  8. I'd say give Bard and Papelbon a rest and see what Lackey's got left. He's retired 5 in a row afterall.
  9. When was the last time we saw a double steal?
  10. Is it just me, or does Salty look like a skinny Seth Rogen?
  11. Lackey's got this.
  12. Its probably to early for Ells to be batting leadoff. Anyone want to start a GT? I would, but I'm 1-4 this season.
  13. There've been a lot of days games lately.
  14. What are the odds that the night that Cliff Lee is pitching, the Rangers would use six relievers? He hasn't needed more than two relievers since opening night when the Mariners needed four.
  15. I say it all the time, but advance stats don't mean anything if a player is performing. Pedroia is going to be back by the time those stats catch up with him.
  16. After the start tonite, I just want to talk about what a great job Buchholz has been doing. Of all the injuries to this team, I honestly believe the one to Buchholz was the one that hurt them the most. This kid finally got over confidence issues, got to the all-star game, and has the best ERA in the AL. If he didn't get injured, there's a chance he might've gotten the Cy Young. His line for tonite was 8 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 2 BB. I think they should seriously consider signing him to a long term contract while they can.
  17. Salty can play 1B, but he just doesn't hit well enough to justify him backing up the position.
  18. Unless they trade an outfielder and don't pick up another one, I think that they have 4 players that could start in most ballparks, so I think they will be able to give those guys more than enough rest.
  19. Will, you missed DH, there is one fewer than you suggested. I think there are enough big bat, no glove guys out there that the Red Sox will get one of them if Ortiz doesn't want to come back. And its not that I don't like or want Hall, but I'm not sure if he's worth the money. It depends what he's asking-- more than 5 would be too much.
  20. Well, not painful exactly, but do you know what I mean?
  21. Its a bit painful that when Buchholz has a complete game going, it happens to be a time when they're winning by 8 runs, and they actually could use their bullpen.
  22. I've been extremely happy with how Bill Hall has done. As I mentioned in the Kalish thread, his numbers are pretty much where Mike Cameron's should be, Avg/HR/OPS, and while he's not a gold glover, I think his versatility is just as valuable as one. I'm not sure if he has a spot on the roster though. I see Lowrie as a cheap and effective utility infielder, and I still am under the impression that they will go out and get another outfielder. I'm not sure that the money he's going to be asking for is going to be worth it for a 2nd utility player/5th outfielder.
  23. I just want to mention that right now, Bill Hall's numbers are exactly where we expected Mike Cameron's to be.
  24. Buchholz has had a 96 all season, but I think the 97 is pretty new. I've seen reports of him being capable of 97, but I've never actually seen it.
