  1. Someone needs to take the Jose Reyes glasses off. Their OPS were pretty similar. RBIs mean nothing for a guy who hit leadoff last year in Scutaro. HRs, sure, but Scutaro got on base a heckuva lot more(which is what you want in a leadoff hitter). I'm not saying Scutaro is an incredible SS, all I'm saying is that calling him "slightly below average" means that Alexi is the only average player, and no above average players exist. That doesn't seem logical to me. Fun fact-- Lowrie's WAR in 2010 was very similar to Scutaro's in 1/3 the games.
  2. Offensively is a complete wash, maybe even advantage Scutaro because of A-ram's abysmal OBP. Defense for Scutaro was a bit down, but that had a lot to do with the injuries he was playing through. Either way, he's been well above average at SS in the AL the last two years. Take Reyes' career .769 OPS into the AL East, and I'd bet you its pretty close to Scutaro's. Edit: The last three years.
  3. Slightly below average? Name one AL SS who was significantly better than him in 2010.
  4. The Mets are waiting for Reyes's value to go back up. If they wanted to sell low, they would have done it this offseason, especially with such a short market at SS. He'll go midseason to a desperate contender. With Lowrie, and Iggy as possibly future shortstops, and Scutaro with a 2012 option, I see him as a longshot-- plus, it will take much bigger prospects that I think you're willing to believe.
  5. I can see a low to mid 3 ERA from him. He got lucky with defense? That's ridiculous. Of the 8 defensive positions, 5 of them will see an significant upgrade this year. I also saw Buchholz as one of the players that just wasn't comfortable with Farrell, and it already sounds like he's getting along much better with Young.
  6. Drew is clearly more talented, no question. But he had a serious decline last year with no major health issues. I just don't think his heart is in it. Dipre hates me for it, but I truly value the intangibles of a player.
  7. I'd prefer to see Lowrie up, personally. But then again, I just don't have that much confidence in Drew. He had a really off season last year, and he's been talking about retirement. If he's treating it like a contract year, he'll do well, but if he's just hanging in there for a last paycheck, I'm skeptical. Scutaro has grit that Drew never will, even if he wants to be the next Crocodile Dundee.
  8. Drew and Ortiz showed very extreme splits last year. From the 6th inning on, this spot in the order is going to be incredibly vulnerable, and having to pinch-hit for them every game is going to use up the bench early, and taking Drew's glove out of the outfield won't help the team either. I just don't think that giving Drew 15 more AB over the course of the season is worth it, especially if you're then going to lose those AB again by taking him out.
  9. This is exactly what happens when your best player is sitting on the bench all game. Let Big Z play.
  10. No, I understand that, but that order gives you LLRRLL in the 5,6,7,8,9,1 spots. Even if catcher is going to be switch, I'd shuffle it up a bit.
  11. I'm skeptical about putting Ortiz and Drew back to back. Just too much lefty there.
  12. Remember that Tito is a player's manager. I think it would not be a sign of good faith to take Ellsbury, who may have suffered medical malpractice, and made pitiful money in arbitration, and put him last in the order. If he doesn't hit well, drop him.
  13. An interesting article about John Lackey. Yesterday, all he was throwing was fastballs because he wanted to finetune it, and Al-gon noticed and hit the homer. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/03/03/lackey_isnt_throwing_anybody_any_curves/ Another interesting point is in 16 of his 33 starts in the AL East he had a 4.99 ERA-- doing some quick mental math, it he was closer to career averages against other divisions. So, with more mental preparation, declining Rays/Jays offense, and better defense, I see great things from him this year.
  14. Coco Crisp gets a DUI. Uhoh.
  15. There are schools in the U.S. with very rigorous moral codes. They should not be criticized for wanting/giving that option. If you don't want to follow their rules, go to another school, its as simple as that.
  16. Murphey looked like garbage last night. Kry looked solid.
  17. Players with big mouths shoot themselves in the foot sometimes. I wouldn't be surprised if Schilling was one of them, and his foot is what will get him into the Hall.
  18. Welcome. As for the Liverpool freaks, well, they come in, post an introduction thread, post a "how does this ownership handle their teams" thread, and then leave. That's sort of how it works.
  19. We've started to see a trend of power numbers on the decline, and large improvements in pitching. Power hitters from the post-steroid era could find themselves with an advantage from voters. What makes Pujols so much more amazing is that he's been unscathed by steroid allegations. If A-gon stays productive and stays out of the wrong headlines, he has good chances.
  20. Murphy came into the season out of shape. If he can get into shape, he's a solid player and can average a double double. This is something you want to see coming off your bench.
  21. I moved out from New York to live close to Fenway. True story... kind of.
  22. http://news.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view/2011_0224early_days_of_young_era_sox_pitching_coach_settling_in/srvc=home&position=also An early perspective of Curt Young from some of the Red Sox pitchers, comparing him to Farrell. I'm surprised to hear Buchholz talking about Farrell being more difficult to be comfortable with-- obviously he wasn't going to really go into it indepth, but its a lot of what I've been saying for months. Curt Young also mentioned that "all five of these starters could be an ace on another team". I'm glad he has faith in Dice-k, and I hope they have a much better relationship than Dice-k had with Farrell.
  23. There we go! Glad to hear it, this trade looks a lot better now. Hopefully he can get in shape before playoffs.
