    If I were the Yankees, I would be playing to keep the Rays out of the playoffs. The playoff teams right now are the Yanks, Rangers, Tigers and Red Sox. All of those teams have one healthy ace, and then there is a bit of a dropoff. The Rays are built for the playoffs, with young healthy arms and bats that have gotten far less worn down throughout the season. I'm betting that whoever wins the wildcard gets the to the WS right now.

    Absolutely. He's a great 8th starter, maybe even a Pawtucket ace. That being said, depth is incredibly important, and to go into 2012 with him as a 5th, 6th, or even 7th starter would be a bad idea going forward.

    There is simply no way Francona can start Lackey in the playoffs. He knows it as well as everyone else.

    I don't think it matters who starts, as long as those guys get priority over Miller/Wakefield/Lackey/Weiland. Despite what the naysayers have been claiming, Lester/Beckett/Bedard/Piggyback would be a pretty solid playoff rotation. If Buchholz gets stronger and can throw more pitches, Lester/Beckett/Piggyback/Bedard may be able to do some damage against Philly.

    Sure, players will be getting raises. It happens. But most of those will be 1-3 million dollar raises, and I just referenced about 30-40 million coming off the books. This is not a situation like Felix Hernandez getting a 7 million dollar raise at the end of this year.

    I was in a group of pinkhats today. Apparently they didn't know that the Red Sox were on the verge of missing the playoffs. You know what? I kind of want to keep it that way. Win this game, and the Sox are in. Believe.
