  1. I don't know if anyone pointed this out, but Anibal Sanchez is only 28 years old. A four-five year deal would go straight through his prime. And since he won't cost a draft pick, that certainly helps too.
  2. Obnoxious and dangerous are two very different things. I'm constantly annoyed by fans at Red Sox, but I'm never concerned about them sticking a knife out, and putting a hole in my chest.
  3. He compares similarly to Josh Willingham, who is around the same age, same career OBP/OPS numbers, with somewhat better defense. Willingham got 3/21 million. Swisher is looking at 50-80. If that tells me anything, it says that Swisher is going to be a rip off.
  4. Have you been to a Celtics game lately? Last time I went, a bunch of drunken idiots refused to stop swearing obscenities in front of the kids that were sitting behind them, and threatened the father. And that wasn't the only incident... on a Tuesday night game. That's usually how my experience goes with the Celtics. Red Sox fans may not be dedicated, but atleast they're civil.
  5. Well, it isn't like there is much to talk about. The only thing going on right now is hiring coaches. When the offseason starts, I think more people will get excited about the team again.
  6. I'm not sure if this is a legit idea, or a mocking of the defensive minded posters here, but I really like the idea. He gives pretty much the same level of production offensively as Aviles, and is very good defensively. I am concerned with a thirty-five year old shortstop coming off season-ending knee surgery, but he could be a stop-gap for Iggy/Bogaertz.
  7. This postseason makes me wonder, exactly why teams put so much time into developing elite hitters. Teams like the Giants build pitching juggernauts, and then hobble together an offense with mid-tier pieces like Cabrera, Scutaro, Xavier Nady, and their hitting ends up being less important.
  8. No matter what happens, the Red Sox are going to be putting up a 13.5 million deal just for compensation picks. So what difference does it makes if they tack on 8-9 million for 2014? I just don't see any reason why Ortiz is not going to be worth it. The guy has proven everything that there is to prove for this organization. His achilles is not that big of a problem.
  9. Report in: Bogar is gone!!!
  10. I bring this up frequently, but Florida is simply oversaturated with sports teams. They have 2-3 teams for every major sport, plus good NCAA teams, plus major golf/tennis events. Not to mention Spring Training. Their demographics heavily favor out-of-staters who have their own baseball teams. And they do have this thing called the beach. The Rays will never be a big sports franchise.
  11. I don't think the Tigers knew what a talent Avila was when they signed Victor Martinez. There is extra value in players with versatility, and players at 30 are much more expensive than ones at 36. There are also 16 additional teams bidding for first basemen.
  12. You never know, some small market team in rebuilding mode could take him for publicity.
  13. How about a three-team trade of Ellsbury/Doubront/Swihart? I would love to be able to figure out exactly what kind of prospects Ellsbury is worth-- his value in fantasy trades seems to be pretty inconsistent. For example, if he does end up equaling two top-100 prospects, the Rays get three high ceiling prospects, and a solid pitcher in Doubront who has a 3.10 ERA at Tropicana field. The Red Sox lose Swihart, but otherwise no huge long term loss, and the third team gets an MVP-when-healthy.
  14. The guy had the highest OPS in baseball last year while on the field. If someone you worked with got paid big contracts anywhere from 4x(Lackey) to 15x (Crawford), and did no work whatsoever, you'd be pretty pissed too.
  15. I was actually thinking the same thing today. David Price is perhaps the best arm available, and he'll cost significantly less than Felix Hernandez. Unfortunately, the Red Sox don't match up very well with the Rays. They'll have to overpay significantly because they're in the same division, for one. But the biggest problem is that the many of the Red Sox's highest ceiling players will end up at the same position at Longoria Cecchini/Bogarts/Middlebrooks.
  16. During the season I didn't have a problem with the guy. But the way he has handled the last month is downright pathetic.
  17. Considering he had the highest OPS in baseball around mid-summer last year at a cool 14 million, and has had only two significant injuries over the last decade, I see no reason not to sign him for two years.
  18. You know what is nonsense? The notion that having a manager who speaks the same language as you is not an extremely important thing for a player.
  19. And Saltalamacchia is this team's starting catcher, but it doesn't mean he's all that valuable. At the end of the year, Aviles was benched for a guy who ended up with a .118 average.
  20. I don't think the Rangers would do a straight up deal like that.
  21. Dice-k's time here prepared the organization for Japanese talent, and it was a big part of the reason the Red Sox signed several Japanese players including Tazawa. Having a MLB major league manager with Japanese language skills is one of the few things that I can appreciate about Farrell.
  22. I really don't see the sense in worrying about losing a poor hitting, poor fielding utility player. This isn't like trading away Lowrie, or trading away Scutaro. Aviles is a guy that Kansas City pretty much gave to us because they didn't want to pay a minimum salary to. At the end of 2011, Aviles was looked at as a plan D.
  23. Agreed. Unless you find someone willing to trade prospects for the 2011 Ellsbury, he's not going to pull in nearly what he is worth to this team. Every scenario I look at shows me that he's worth significantly more to this team on the roster. If he does well, he's very very valuable at the trade deadline for desperate teams-- and at that point you can probably call up Bradley. If Ells does poorly, he's much more easily signed long term.
  24. The Red Sox are receiving David Carpenter from the Jays. As expected, this is a who-cares acquisition.
  25. If you look at Aviles's raw stats, he had a pretty mediocre season. But he was one of the few hitters to play well in the clutch. His OPS shot up to .831 with RISP. He definitely saw reduced playing time at the end of the season to give Pedro and Iggy a shot, and I don't think he was meant as a big part of the organization's future, so this is an acceptable loss.
