  1. Not one, but two very good pitching options off the market from Cherrington. All for the cost of a homophobic and mediocre starting shortstop and Toronto's #8 prospect. Hello last place.
  2. He absolutely would get a minor league contract, but giving him one is still a great idea. Two concussions may have killed his career, but you never know-- he hit 36 home runs here in 2009. No one else has hit that many since Ortiz in 2006, or Manny in 2005.
  3. By all means, I love the defense. It just seems like a crazy contract for a guy who averages 55 games per year.If it means getting rid of Salty, I'd pay him 10 mill per year:lol: In all reality he's probably just the hired help until Swihart gets here.
  4. Dodgers won the bidding for Hyun-Jin Ryu. Seems a lot of money for a guy who will probably end up being eighth inning guy. Why do I get the feeling Hamilton and Greinke will both end up on the Dodgers this year?
  5. May this be the end of the Salty era in Boston. In his three seasons with Boston, he has allowed 5.10 runs per game. That's unimaginable.
  6. 6 million for an aging backup catcher? I have mixed feelings about that. It feels like a NickPuntoian signing to me. He's a bench player getting paid more than Cody Ross last year -- the Red Sox paid him what they did in order to get him away from the Braves. This makes me think that the Red Sox may be out of the running for Mike Napoli. If three catchers felt like a lot, four seems unmanageable. I don't think stashing Lavarnway in Pawtucket will help this team much-- maybe he's more suited for first base?
  7. Here's an idea. Hamilton's poor postseason, and the huge number of outfielders available this FA hurts his contract status. Give him a 1/35- 1/40 deal to rebuild value.
  8. This is the kind of idea that got them into trouble in the first place. Remember two years ago when the FO didn't want to spend for a better SP midseason? Or last year when we went into free agency, and ended up trading away our NLCS MVP starting shortstop, and relied on pitching re-treads instead of rebuilding a starting rotation? It isn't just about today, or this year. The Red Sox need to look into resigning Pedroia/Lester. They need to have money available if a good mid-season trade comes up. They need to look into locking up younger guys like Middlebrooks. They need to rebuild-as-they-go with short term deals and intelligent, disciplined longer team deals. Hamilton is not a disciplined long term deal.
  9. Sounds like the Brewers, Orioles and Mariners are all in on him. Its not like he doesn't have suitors.
  10. Hamilton at 32 million per year would be out of hand. Would you rather have Stephen Drew, Napoli, and Kuroda, on short term deals or Josh Hamilion on a four year deal? The Red Sox have too many holes to fill-- Signing Hamilton would be the equivalent of putting a golden spoon underneath a leaky ceiling.
  11. Five years? You're definitely looking for a trend where there isn't one. Pitching to career averages is not the same thing is declining.
  12. The idea is that his decline was because he had a bad elbow. Considering that the Red Sox knew about his bad elbow years ago makes it clear why he fell off the cliff. After Tommy John, there's a decent chance he'll be back to 2010 form.
  13. The Providence Journal had an interesting article up today. It had one key point -- There won't be many suitors for Adam Laroche. The Red Sox really don't have anyone in the pipeline, so filling the position for 3 years won't really block anyone. http://blogs.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/2012/11/adam-laroche-could-have-more-value-to-red-sox-than-any-other-team.html
  14. I was thinking about this earlier, and I started to wonder if the Red Sox really screwed up by not offering Ross a qualifying offer. They have a good number of quality outfield prospects between Bradley, Brentz, Kalish and Jacobs who are only a year or two away. Worst case scenario, you get a 20 home run guy for 13 million. A little expensive, but I don't think there is a better one-year contract available this offseason. If he rejects the offer, his value goes down significantly and he either comes back for cheaper AAV, or the Red Sox get yet another protected draft pick.
  15. It isn't like Justin Upton is some superstar defensive whiz. Over his career, he's been pretty much dead-center average. He's probably going to cost one of the B's, and maybe another very good piece like Cecchini/ Doubront/ Lavarnway. If he can be had for cheap then awesome, let's do it. Otherwise, even if he adds .100 OPS to his stats and stays perfectly healthy over that time, I'm still not sure if he's worth it. There are so many options available. Hamilton, BJ Upton, Bourn, Victorino, Cabrera, Swisher, Ross, Pagan, Hunter. Trade options like Choo, Willingham and plenty of others are out there.
  16. Player A .807 OPS, .267 avg, 22 HR, 2.4 WAR Player B .783 OPS, .280 avg, 17 HR, 2.5 WAR Player A is Cody Ross, and player B is Upton. Justin Upton scares me quite a bit. He's a player who has never lived up to the hype, but would cost as much as an elite-elite type guy. I understand he's only 25, but so many of the game's best outfielders are available right now.
  17. He does have a lot to prove, but I hope he realizes that the Red Sox are the best place for him. The fans love him here. He hit here. It may take time for him to get back on track for him, but I bet he'll feel like he has something to prove.
  18. Hopefully hiring coaches won't be a distraction for the FO. Coaches can help the players, but talent can't be coached.
  19. Pal's idea of the day: Go get Hunter Pence! The guy raked in Philadelphia, and then moved to San Francisco and shat himself. On a 1/15 deal, the Giants aren't considering non-tendering him, but it is close. Trading him would give the Giants an opportunity to put money elsewhere, but they probably would be looking for major league talent back. Maybe Bard or Aviles would be tempting for them.
  20. With Masterson, the problem is much bigger than just a minor tweak. He simply cannot get left handed hitters out. It is pretty glaring. Seeing Fielder several times a year, along with the resurgence of Adam Dunn have not been kind to him. If I'm talking to the Guardians, I would check in on Asdrupal Cabrera.
  21. How do you stay competitive while having a youth movement? Sign above average players to short term contracts, and make smart calculated moves on the elite players you want to sign over the next few years to supplement your young players. Any starter with ace-potential who can be had on a one-year deal should be top priority. Other teams may not have 16 million to blow, but the Red Sox do.
  22. :lol::lol::lol:
  23. Are you missing the facts here? They declined the option, and there was a 3.5 million dollar buyout.
  24. The Angels ended up declining the option, and got nothing for him. The Angels could have saved 3.5 million by simply giving him away. It isn't like he ended the season on the DL either, he ended the season very well.
