  1. My concern is... if Bauer isn't their guy, who is? Dempster? Lohse? They've talked about adding value and short contracts, but they've overpaid mostly everyone. I can absolutely appreciate going for great clubhouse players but so far their strategy makes no sense to me. So far they have a 70-80 win team that is straying the line between being a playoff team, and being a rebuilding team. Overpaying pitchers in their mid 30s, and grabbing the 15th pick in the draft every year won't help anything.
  2. The most painful part is the the Reds needed a center fielder, are a contender who was looking for a short term deal at that position.... and instead of making a deal work with them to get rid of Ellsbury, they decided to put a right fielder into the position.
  3. Ugh. Sounds like the Red Sox are ignoring Edwin Jackson. I bet they'll end up signing Lohse and Liriano-- Lohse will turn to a complete bust, and Liriano will stay a complete bust.
  4. I don't know who is feeding information to baseball writers, but I have been hearing about Steven Wright all day. It seems that suddenly people in the Red Sox organization have started thinking highly of him, and I have been reading hints about him possibly starting for the Red Sox mid 2013. Anyone have any thoughts on him? Knuckleballers are painful, but having a 90 MPH fastball probably doesn't hurt.
  5. He and A-rod are very similar players-- Past their prime third-basemen with bad hips, legs and knees, who probably should be at first base or DHing. That being said, I wish him the best. This organization did him no favors, but as a fanbase, we should cheer him anyway.
  6. I'm starting to feel less and less convinced that the Rays have good pitching, and more convinced that they simply have a very good park for pitchers. Shield's ERA at home is 3.33, and away it is 4.54. Price? 2.61/3.72. Hellickson 2.84/3.32. Oakland seems to do the same exact thing... trade away mediocre pitching that looks like gold in their park, and bring in a pile of great prospects. Maybe all the more reason to get rid of Fenway and build a bigger park.
  7. The guys the Red Sox have been focusing on scare me quite a bit. Dempster, Lohse, Dickey, Liriano. I sure hope that is just smoke, and they go after better targets. Marcum, Garza, Jackson interests me a lot more, but I haven't heard much at all about the Red Sox having interest.
  8. I've been thinking along these lines, and trying to think of some out of the box solutions. There is a team out there with a very very good team, that could have gone much further in the playoffs, but their team is just too young, and their ace was put to inning limits. Ellsbury + Lester + Bailey for Strasburg. Throw in a high-tier prospect or two if necessary or pick up Jayson Werth's contract. Strasburg could very possibly be the the next Pedro Martinez for us, but is he worth more than a championship for the Nationals? Three all-star caliber players, plus prospects and maybe salary relief. Going deep into the playoffs means having a guy who can pitch 200 innings in the regular season and 40 more in the postseason. Is Strasburg ready for that?
  9. He also projects Iglesias playing 139 games, Kalish playing 129, and Ross catching 93. I would bet that he's counting on the Red Sox to have elite-elite defense in all of the most important defensive positions.
  10. Baseball America ranked three of those players as the #23, #28 and #68 prospects of 2012. Tampa Bay's farm system is staaaaaaaaacked.
  11. This is getting ridiculous.
  12. Well s***, the Royals just got Shields and Davis from the Rays.
  13. Absolutely. I wonder if they would be interested in Sands and De La Rosa? But in all seriousness, yes, he's definitely worth looking into, but I seriously doubt they'd want to trade him-- Capuano or Harang are the guys who will probably be moved.
  14. I have been wondering if the Red Sox might be willing to spend considerably over the draft slot at #7 to get someone who might usually go around #3-4. Edwin Jackson is not going to cost the Red Sox a draft pick either, which is all the more reason why he seems to be a very good fit.
  15. The Red Sox have two players in their system who could be an ace. Lester and Buchholz. Maybe instead of throwing money at the problem by signing new players, they should throw money at the problem by trying to get those two guys to as healthy and strong as possible. It just seems like there are so many players who had troubles in Boston, and immediately went to another team and thrived. Fire the entire medical staff, and offer to pay the medical staff of an elite team twice or three times as much as they've been making. Hire more trainers, masseuses, physical therapy experts. Find ways to protect them from the media. Maybe look for an elite-elite steroid dealer, like the one Bautista has been seeing. Oh, and maybe replacing that Saltalamacchia guy couldn't hurt:lol:
  16. Maybe you sentence is poorly constructed. Seriously man, I don't know what your beef is here. Was anyone else confused by my post? Do I need to clarify something for you?
  17. Beckett sure pitched like a back end starter. You may be missing the point-- This team had far too many pitches thrown by guys with 5.00+ ERA.
  18. No one will want Lackey. Period. If you hear rumors about teams who want him, they're about teams who are wondering if the Red Sox will give him away for free.
  19. The Red Sox can win in the regular season even without elite-elite pitching. Their offense will be very very good, and they can still look at their options at the deadline. But the problem over the last few years is that their back-end pitchers have been disastrous. 2012 starters? 12 starts: Dice-k 8.28 ERA 21 starts: Beckett-- 5.23 ERA. 8 starts: Bard 5.30 ERA 18 starts: Aaron Cook 5.65 ERA 2 starts Zach Stewart: 22.24 ERA 62 starts by pitchers with a 5.23 ERA or worse! 14-37 There is no slugging your way out from those kinds of holes. But do they need pitchers with 2.50 ERA every time out? Not necessarily. If they add two more starters capable of a 4.00-4.50 ERA with 150-200 IP, they will win 10-15 more games easily.
  20. The four remaining mid-tier options are Edwin Jackson, Lohse, Marcum, and Dempster. Jackson is starting to seem to be the far best option of the group. His last team is already out of the running, and he's probably not a good fit with many of his previous teams, which eliminates most of the contenders. I keep looking at Kyle Lohse, and I can't figure out why anyone would want to sign him long-term. He's 34 years old. He's been absolutely spanked by American league teams in his career-- If you look at his career numbers, he only has good splits against teams like Houston, Cleveland, Tampa, Pittsburgh, etc. Dempster too, is a NL pitcher at best. Marcum has had arm and shoulder problems, but hell, you can probably sign him AND Jackson..
  21. I don't necessarily think that is true. They only save 6 million from that trade. Greinke+ Upton still seems the more likely scenario.
  22. The word is that they want to add one or two. If they add two it would mean that someone else gets traded, or they get an injury risk players like Marcum and another piece.
  23. I just read a very interesting article about Edwin Jackson-- apparently he hasn't seen much interest yet this offseason. Anibel Sanchez has seemed to get all the attention, despite that they have been relatively similar pitchers. I've been changing my preferences for pitchers a lot this offseason, but Edwin Jackson is probably the best option on the FA market. Maybe the Red Sox should throw an offer out there before his value jumps up-- after Jackson's misfortune last year, maybe he'll ignore Boras and accept. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/mlb-rumors/21310361/report-edwin-jackson-encountering-very-cool-market
  24. I've been seriously warming up to the thought of signing Edwin Jackson. His career numbers scared me a bit, but I didn't realize that he made his MLB debut at 19. He's 29 years old, so a three year contract would only put him at 32. Over the last four years, he's been a 4.00 ERA pitcher, tons of innings. I wonder if 3/39 would be enough to get him on this team?
