  1. Just to be clear, I did mention that I thought that they will be a good team in about five years

  3. Feldman isn't all that exciting to me, but Scott Baker is one of those guys who gives you big innings at respectable ERA. Take him out of the AL, and he's probably a 3.50 ERA guy if he recovers from surgery well. Villanueva saw quite a bit of success as a swing man this year in the ALE, so he's definitely going to enjoy throwing to NL lineups. They didn't pay much for any of those guys either. Add Jackson and a healthy Garza to the mix and their rotation might be respectable this year.
  4. Report saying the Pirates are asking for Iglesias for Hanrahan. I get the feeling that is something the Red Sox are very willing to do.
  5. The current Marlins ownership bought the team, won a world series the following year, and haven't been to the playoffs in ten years since.
  6. This is the Cubs we are talking about. They're probably the most patient fanbase in baseball at this point. Theo gets a #2 draft back this year. He restocked his rotation big time this year, and it is probably better than the Red Sox's this year. Soler, Rizzo, Castro make a strong core for the future, and they have pretty insane payroll flexibility in the coming years. They're probably a .500 team the next few years but they'll be back to prominence soon enough. They have 15 million more under the luxury threshold. 19 million if they trade Salty. 31 million if they trade Ellsbury too. That's more than enough room for Marcum, but at the beginning of the offseason, the word was that Ben was looking to trade for starters, not buy them, so we'll see.
  7. It would make more sense to get rid of the Marlins than the Rays. Kill one off, and the other will gain a few thousand fans. Atleast the Rays are competitive. The other concern is... how much money is there in the Caribbean? Maybe the fans can afford $5-10 tickets, but have you been to the Dominican Republic? It is a poor country, with high crime rates. Players aren't going to want to play there unless they are actually from the DR.
  8. I don't think any of this is relevant. I'm talking about a rebuilding value type deal, or a deal where a player simply didn't get any value on the free agent market.
  9. This isn't always true though. The Mariners and Guardians have had a ton of money to spend, and no one seems to be biting. I know in Seattle's case it has to do with park factors, but there is money out there. And as far as why a team would offer that deal? For the prospects. I have been to Kansas City. Its actually a phenomenal city, they call it the City of Fountains-- its a beautiful place. I'd rather live there than LA/Chicago/NY.
  10. Random question to everyone out there: Why don't more players sign one year deals with bad teams? Players always want to play for a winner... but by signing a one year deal, it almost guarantees that they'll be traded to a contender at the trade deadline anyway. Many players really like to limit themselves to a select group of teams, but sometimes those teams end up going nowhere. Great example here is Cody Ross.
  11. Edwin Jackson is an innings eater. He's not a stud, he's not an ace. The idea is by signing him, Theo gets a solid mid-rotation guy who will protect his bullpen and younger arms, which in theory will be built almost from scratch in the next 5 years through the draft, and trading away high value pieces on the ends of deals. The Cubs signed a pile of AL pitchers to short team deals. I would not be surprised if Baker yields a top prospect at the deadline in 2013. Garza definitely will. Villanueva and Feldman will definitely benefit from getting out of Toronto/Texas.
  12. Sounds like a contract the Cubs sign in order to ship him out to someone else for prospects.
  13. The Red Sox need another starter. I'd prefer Jackson, Marcum, or Santana, but if he is the best available, fine.
  14. It doesn't always happen like that. The Angels had a logjam with Morales, and ended up getting Vargas out of the deal. I'm not saying Salty is worth a Vargas, but maybe they can get a 6th inning reliever for him?
  15. Pitchers have a bad day sometimes. Lester's just happened to be in Fenway.
  16. It would be one thing if he was consistently bad at Fenway, but that wasn't the case. He had four completely awful starts at Fenway, giving up 31 runs in 14 innings . In his other 14 starts, he had a 4.25 ERA. The home numbers are skewed by a small sample size. /thread.
  17. Jacko, you really aren't factoring in exactly how little the Red Sox lost last year. The Red Sox lose: Adrian Gonzalez +2.5 WAR Josh Beckett -.1 WAR Carl Crawford .4 WAR Nick Punto -.2 WAR We're talking about 2.8 wins here. Victorino alone had a 2.4 WAR last year. Napoli had a 1.4 WAR on an off year. Gomes 2.1. Dempster 3.3. Ross 1.5. Uehara .9. Stephen Drew will contribute as well. Ellsbury is on a contract year so he could add another 9 wins on his own. Lackey, Bailey, Middlebrooks, Bard, Ortiz will be back from injuries. Plus, the Red Sox have much deeper depth in the minors and bench. There are a significant number of places where this team can improve going into 2013. They need one more pitcher before 90 wins is reasonable, but they're much better than 2012.
  18. The Cubs just signed Villanueva. Maybe that means they're out on Edwin Jackson. Wouldn't it be great to swoop and get Jackson for cheap?
  19. He has a 3.74 career ERA. If you ignore his CY Young year, he has been a #2 starter every year of his career.
  20. I looked at innings, not games started, and his showed about half a season-- less if he actually was an ace. And just to point out, this was an all ominous elbow injury, not something minor. Garza is probably equivalent in value to Dan Haren or Scott Baker. Teams historically value players they drafted higher than players other teams drafted. Theo knows most of the organization's prospects-- if he truly needs a B to move Garza, he's a lot worse a GM than I've given him credit for.
  21. He spent most of 2012 on the DL and he didn't exactly pitch like a complete ace when he did take the mound. He also will cost 12 million on the last year of his contract, and probably won't re-sign with the Cubs. Theo must have guys in this organization that he likes who aren't necessarily key prospects for this team.
  22. Cafardo mentions that the Red Sox could be in on both Garza and Soriano. Not sure if Soriano is worth a draft pick in the low 40s, but that bullpen would have friggen ridiculous potential if they signed him. Garza... definitely worth checking in with Theo. Give him Iggy and Salty and see if he bites-- those were his guys.
  23. Edwin Jackson is looking for 4-5 years. Yikes, count me out.
  24. The contract was agreed upon pending a physical. He failed the physical. However, they're trying to work around it. Maybe its annoying for Napoli, but I seriously doubt they manage to decrease the number of years on the contract-- maybe an option to void a year with games missed, but if a player goes into a contract assuming they're going to miss a significant number of games, they're the ones being dishonest in the negotiations.
