  1. I figure the delay because they are hovering near the luxury cap right now--about $9 mil below according to Speier, and Hanrahan puts them close. If they are including Jones, that would mean Pitt has to take some salary back. So they are probably trying to come up with a package that keeps them under the cap and is agreeable to both teams. Of course, they could always walk away from Napoli, which would solve the cap problem, and use Gomez at 1B as the RHd bat. If Napoli has a hip issue, his versatility might be restricted.
  2. I think they did all right considering the constraints they applied to signing FAs: no more than 3 years and no lost draft pick. Those were the lines in the sand. I've heard some knowledgeable people say they'll be right in there this year if their core players show up to play--which some didn't last year. Or at least had sub-par years. My guess is they will. Gomez was AAA MVP last year. That's not chopped liver. He showed he could hit when he came up in the few chances he got. And the one time I saw him playing 1B, he made a nice play. That doesn't prove much, except he isn't a stiff. He was also enlisted to play 3B a few times as well. I guess they think he's Youkilis. The one thing going against him is his age--28. There is age discrimination against older guys coming up from the minors--they like them younger. Remember Crash Davis in Bull Durham?
  3. For Jones, I would give up more than Iggy. He hits RHP very well, and would be the perfect platoon player at 1B with Napoli, plus can play RF. Salary last yr $2.2 mil. They have to be after him.
  4. Has to be Garrett Jones for Iggy. Salaries match. Jones is good platoon at 1B with Napoli. Can also play RF.
  5. Magic Johnson will lose 50 lbs when the Dodgers miss the playoffs. Papa John will get some ballplayer to give away 4 million--make that 2 million--pizzas in a TV commercial. He will do 2 commercials an inning during the game of the week. Ben Cherington will resume giving scouting reports to the manager after forgetting to do so last year. Farrell will require loyalty oaths from all his coaches, at the suggestion of Larry Lucchino. The Red Sox will go the entire season without a DL injury--a major league record--and make the playoffs, as predicted by MLB TV analyst Larry Bowa. Henry will lay off half the medical staff--a savings of $6 million off the luxury cap. John Lester will win 15 games. Lackey will win 12. Toronto will not make the playoffs. They will blame Las Vegas and the media. The Yankees will make the playoffs, but promptly announce their retirement.
  6. The Orioles used 100 mirrors and smoke from 100 fires to win all those games last year.
  7. They wanted Iggy, but Sox said no. They have several 1st basemen--could also be Clint Robinson--big power numbers AAA Omaha (KC).
  8. Clint Robinson? LHD hitting 1st baseman. Big power numbers AAA Omaha (KC). They have several 1st baseman on roster. Sands would be another.
  9. I don't know what those stats mean about Atchison. I do know what they mean about Hanrahan.
  10. Closers aren't always consistent, from year to year. Papelbon has come back after down years--for him. It's Pimentel and Sands for Hanrahan--apparently. Good deal for the Sox, since Sands didn't figure to get much opportunity. He could be much better than Gomes if he has his swing down.
  11. Has to be good trade, getting a top pitcher like Hanrahan for a AAA guy with power. You read Speier's story about Sands, and you wonder why they got Gomes. This guy could be much better than Gomes if he gets his swing down. But they got their best bullpen pitcher in Hanrahan, so it's a good deal. Pimentel is an expendable pitcher. The Pirates have a good organization, and maybe they can do something with him. They like him.
  12. You never know when guys change leagues. It becomes a variable. Dickey, for example, has pitched well only with the Mets the last 3 years. He was sub-par before that for 7 years in the AL.
  13. Nice to see a deal is close on this one, and Ben is alive and awake--apparently.
  14. Yeah--the downside is one year before free agency for Hanrahan. Then Hanrahan will cost too much money--at least for what they are willing to pay closers.
  15. Hanrahan shows no sign of slipping. He's among the top NL closers. I'd like to see Sands get a real shot--1B or OF. Could be ready.
  16. Don't see Porcello as an improvement over what they have. Hanrahan throws 96 and is a top 5 NL closer. If they can get him for Iggy and a starter/reliever like Morales, that would be a good deal for them. Makes their bullpen among the best. Deal is apparently close, according to trade rumors. Players not known.
  17. Ben is closing in on a deal for Hanrahan. Cmon, Ben. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/red-sox-closing-in-on-deal-for-joel-hanrahan.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
  18. Ha. James thinks this is a good team. So does Larry Bowa. Bowa says if their core players return to form--especially the pitching--they could be in contention. Their closer situation could be lock down if they got Hanrahan. The GM should be jumping on this like that wild dog in Toronto. But Ben is not a jumper.
  19. Tie a red ribbon around Iggy, and ship him to Pittsburgh before Christmas. Somebody wake up Ben.
  20. Trading Iglesias for a top notch closer sounds like a steal. I wonder if the Red Sox would view it that way, though. They undervalue closers, and are still intrigued about another year in AAA for Iggy. I say pull the trigger. Let him become a star somewhere else.
  21. They are already comparing his hip problem to ARod's this morning. ARod took steroids, which probably contributed to his breakdown. The Mariners walked away from Napoli because of his hip. The Red Sox acted pretty quickly signing a bunch of FAs as though it had been pre-scripted. They drew the line at 3 years, and went out and signed the guys they could who would take 3 years. They apparently missed the boat on Napoli. The spike year followed by a year of injuries last year. They still have time to walk away, and are foolish to try to re-do the deal. That isn't going to change his hip condition. They should go after LaRoche or Morse or Swisher.
  22. The Red Sox just announced a bunch of new "interns" joining the organization--assistant this and assistant that. What kind of baseball experience do they have? Doesn't say, except for Lombard, who didn't quite make it. These are the guys who will be the brains of the organization down the line a few years. And right now, they almost look like a bunch of kids off the street--or out of school. Are they paid as "interns"? I read a while back the former Houston GM started in the organization as a mail boy. That says a lot. Regarding Cherington, I think that's an impression from his shy personality. Seems a bit withdrawn. What's more disturbing to me are his public statements of optimism about the team going back over a year. He was all wrong on his reading of the team. And the Napoli signing is going to haunt him if they go through with it.
  23. They should walk away from that Napoli deal, and sign Swisher. Pierzynski just signed for $7.5 mil, which gives you an idea of how much they overpaid for Napoli. Now Napoli can also play 1B, but at what sacrifice to the defense? Unless they sign LaRoche, they aren't going to have much defense at 1B next year. The papers are saying Seattle walked away from Napoli because of the hip. Right now, I don't like this team, and neither do a lot of the pundits out there. They have suddenly gotten old again--without the stars, and have no spending leverage--again.
  24. I know Hanrahan, and he's no Melancon. For sure. They should grab this guy when they can. Morales or Aceves would be good. He's one of the top 5 closers in the NL.
