  1. It's a rental for 2 months. You can't give up anything major for that. On the other hand, they are on top right now, and want to stay on top. The future is today. You can argue it both ways.
  2. As usual, there isn't enough information to make a judgement on Buchholz. The doctors said the same thing about Ortiz--he could play with the foot pain without further damage, but he waited until his salary would be affected to come back. Some guys play with pain, other guys don't.
  3. Garza could be down to the Rangers and the Red Sox. The only caveat is how much you give for a rental.
  4. I think Iggy at SS, Bogaerts at 3B and Middlebrooks at 1B is quite plausible. It's also possible that Middlebrooks gets traded.
  5. Take what he's worth, multiply by 2, and that's what Boras will want.
  6. Buchholz must be a complete uncertainty to them right now, and I would expect them to deal for another starter like Garza if they can get him without giving up any of their top 3 or 4 prospects. Epstein knows the Red Sox farm system, and he might take lower level types for him. They are at the top right now, and can't risk a slide because of starting pitching. The future is now.
  7. They have big decisions to make about pitching before the trade deadline. Should they give up a prospect or two to get another veteran starter like Garza? Epstein might settle for lower level types he knows. Should Henry splurge and go all out for Lee? After all, they have the most wins in baseball right now, and the starting pitching looks a bit shaky--especially with Buchholz refusing to pitch until he feels pain free. The other option is to lean on their pitching prospects and hope they can be enough to stay on top. Really two directions here. I would get Garza if they can get him without giving up their top 3 or 4 prospects. I would not be giving anybody up for still another 3rd baseman like Young. Can't believe they would be serious about that. Their infield depth looks good right now with Drew coming back and Middlebrooks maybe up in August. In the outfield, I would like to see Bradley up again. He looks ready. You pick your spots for a guy like Gomes.
  8. Lester and Buchholz are still critical to the teams' success this year. If both can get going, and Lackey stays hot, they will be tough to beat 2nd half.
  9. Just the deal they had to make. Good lefty BP guy for a minor prospect who would have been lost anyways.
  10. The main concern is what the other AL east teams do at the deadline. Anything big could upset the balance. The Red Sox have to be concerned about that. So they have to be proactive--at least in shoring up the bullpen.
  11. Good lineup depth. Starters pitching well. At least 4 of them. Just need more bullpen depth without sacrificing the farm.
  12. different context, stupido.
  13. What happens when you baby a guy's development? You get a baby?
  14. Aceves still in purgatory--even with the staff short. They are just punishing themselves. You would think all of their organizational problems last year were Aceves' fault.
  15. The price looks too steep for some of these high profile closers. Better to look for lesser names with good BP records. Maybe for lower level prospects.
  16. I see TB has won 6 in a row playing at home against the Twins. Price is back and looking good. They are 3.5 out and suddenly a threat.
  17. They came from behind and pulled it out. Good sign. Aceves finally back. Bradley back. Hopefully to stay. Bradley could be a star next year. Webster needs more AAA time. DeLaRosa needs BP time in Boston. They've got 5 starters in the rotation. What they need is a couple of solid releivers--especially somebody who can help Uehara finish games. Maybe it's Aceves. maybe Delarosa. The FO needs to become more flexible about its young pitchers--slotting them short term where they are needed--starting or relieving. This is a pennant race.
  18. Time to try DeLaRosa. Webster isn't ready. The worst thing is to get blown out of games early by your starter.
  19. Probably too soon for Bogaerts--but not for Middlebrooks. He should be playing 3B right now. I don't care what he hits. He's needed on the field. Holt isn't a 3rd baseman. He's a SS-2B guy.
  20. They've lost Morales, Hanrahan and Miller so far this year--for the year. Bailey imploded and is struggling to come back. The BP has thinned out, and they don't really have good replacements in AAA. So logic says deal for some relief pitchers, or at least move some of your best AAA pitchers into a relief role. So far they've done none of that. Webster and Delarosa should be viewed as candidates for the BP right now. It's about winning now, and you worry about future roles in the future.
  21. The team is on the downs right now after a run at Fenway. That 2nd game in LA affected their momentum. Bradley should have been playing CF last night with injuries to Vic and Ells. Middlebrooks should have been recalled to fill in at 3B. Injuries can turn things around quickly in a race, and you can't let up for a minute. Vic and Drew are two guys who are high upkeep. Ells has never been that durable, either. I think the FO will have to make a decision shortly about this year or the future. Whether they want to give up a good prospect or two to improve significantly right now, or whether to get give up less for a bullpen arm. I think the primary need is to improve the pitching--and the defense, which is near the bottom of the league right now.
  22. Snyder has had some big hits. Good for him. But I'd rather have Middlebrooks in there--at least the late innings--even though he's hitting about .200. He's better defensively. It isn't all about hitting--as the team is showing. Though they are hitting well, too. 3rd in AL. 5th in pitching in stats out today. They are near the bottom in the AL defensively, 12th out of 14 teams. A sign they don't stress defense enough. Maybe their pitching would be better if they did.
  23. If money is blocking you, it doesn't make any difference what level you are. Drew is blocking a lot of things on the left side right now. Plus they have better options in the OF with Bradley than the roster with Ells out. The hope is Cherington doesn't sit until it's too late. He seems to be a deliberate kind of guy.
  24. Bard was a special situation. He had failed as a starter in the minors, and they should have known his limitations. I wouldn't extrapolate Bard to anyone else. Delarosa is clearly a kid overdue to be brought up. There is a sense of urgency here. But the FO tends to operate at a steady state.
  25. I read that Leyland was close to picking Nava on the all-star team. I can see why.
